At the outset, ALEXA is a very powerful tool used to rank web sites traffic. Alexa’s traffic rankings are based on the usage patterns of Alexa Toolbar users over a rolling 3 month period. A site’s ranking is based on a combined measure of reach and pageviews. Reach is determined by the number of unique Alexa users who visit a site on a given day. Pageviews are the total number of Alexa user URL requests for a site. However, multiple requests for the same URL on the same day by the same user are counted as a single pageview. The site with the highest combination of users and pageviews is ranked #1.

Alexa’s traffic rankings are for top level domains only (e.g. domain.com). We do not provide separate rankings for subpages within a domain (e.g. www.domain.com/subpage.html) or subdomains (e.g. subdomain.domain.com) unless we are able to automatically identify them as personal home pages or blogs, like those hosted on Geocities and Tripod. If a site is identified as a personal home page or blog, its traffic ranking will have an asterisk (*) next to it: Personal Page Avg. Traffic Rank: 3,456*. Personal pages are ranked on the same scale as a regular domain, so a personal page ranked 3,456* is the 3,456th most popular page among Alexa users.

Eventually, some might ask how important Alexa Ranking is? and some might be asking why do we need to have an Alexa Rank for our website? To answer the question, in my own point of view, Alexa Ranking is important for all the webs that has been published already simply because it is one of the basis if the site is effective, useful and is the author of it really provide a quality articles which suits on the needs of every readers. Aside from that, Alexa Rank is crucial for every web site to the extent that this will provide a higher opportunity to the specific sites.

On the other hand, if you got your own site we do need to have an Alexa Rank simply because it enables us to accept more opportunities and offers from the advertisers all over the web.

TIPS TO LOWER DOWN YOUR ALEXA RANK:

* Register your site with Alexa.

* Put the badge on your site for you to monitor of your score is going down. ( Going down because Alexa Ranking starts from a higher number to the lower one )

* Keep tracking back your links to other sites.

* Accept exchange links to other site to be able to be access by some other sites around the web.

* Keep leaving a message with your site URI for them to get to your site too.

* Keep updated on your site so that your readers will came back again.

Those were just some of the useful tips that I usually do which I think might be helpful for you too. Let break a leg guys!…c”,)

'Put the badge on your site for you to monitor of your score is going down'

That just seems like a waste of space, you could just visit the site.

Alexa can easily be fooled, the only thing it is handy for is advertising

I would rather install the Alexa toolbar to check your rank.
That way you can increase your ranking and your friends rankings.

Yeah!... I rather agree with but its just a matter of choice!... If you choose not to put the badge then theres no worry about it I guess...:)

alexa rankings are meaningless. Most of the people who use the alexa bars are other webmasters and Alxea is easily tricked. The only thing it's good for is to impress other webmasters who actually care about such things if you have a high rank. The average user could care less.

Mehe, agreed. I think it's only important for the blogs with more ads than content.

Am not sure. Would base the popularity on the number of mails, comments, etc. Otherwise, it seems to be a good tool and if you are ranked higher, you could brag about to others.

Alexa ranking is pretty important, though it is not the only scale on which potential VCs/buyers view the credibility of a website.

We launched www.funepets.com in august and cracked the TOP 100,000 on alexa the very first week. Guess it was because all the tech blogs wrote about us all over the world, and all of them use the Alexa tool bar too.

Howver as our user base permeated to common users we saw a drastic drop in our ranking. Though that does not deter us at all...as we do see the number of registered users signing up increase.

Lol...for all you pet lovers/bloggers...please help us spread the word. We would like to make funepets.com the BEST online pet site in the world.

    Love ya all -- Funepets.

I hate Alexa. I see some blogs written buy tech people that I know I get a lot more traffic than but because my readers don't have the toolbar installed I suffer. It is totally tilted to certain types of users and I don't think it gives a fair representation at all.

    Blech.

Most of the people with the toolbar installed are tech folks and webmasters. It's a very biased system with tons of flaws. It looks good if you have a low score when you are looking for advertisers but I'd rather worry about ways of gaining more quality traffic than alexa ratings. Advertisers with any sort of common sense still consider those demographics to be the most important factor.

That is true. It just sucks because I see certain blogs that are tech related that I do as much traffic in a week compared to what they do in a month but are 100K spots higher than me.

Plus I am just ultra competitive. I need to get a life.

No single site or service is 100% good by itself ... it is only how you use it for yourself . by registering yourself with alexa or putting their badge helps in achieving nothing .
Alexa is good to track which countries you are getting regular hits from , alexa is also great to compare your site with sites of the same genre or your competitor or finding your competitors .
Alexa is however used by several other seo tools and advertising / link selling websites .
