How is the experience of running a blog different from what you expected going into it?

For me, I didn't realize the amount of self-promotion you need to do to attract readers and followers. I thought they somehow magically materialized.

Do tell...

I agree. It's more interactive than I expected. It's more sluggish than I expected - then again, I was doing it bass-ackwards for the first two months. There was WAY more to learn than I expected. And more possibilities, too.

I'm with you on "WAY more to learn"...every day, new ideas. Fortunately, most people here seem more than willing to help.

Yes. The people have been terrific! Very warm, inviting groups. That's been a joy! I can see it might be a challenge to balance the need to continue posting on the actual blog versus chatting with online friends in discussion groups, though! lol

I thought the same about readers/followers, but I quickly stopped caring and I just blog for the hell of it.

I didn't really expect anything. It was more a decision to start doing my random writing online rather than to do it by hand or in a Word file. The one thing that has come as a surprise to me is that my personal blog has readers. The others each have something to offer to a particular niche, but I can't imagine who is reading about my recycling bins, disputes with my daughter's school and views on online dating.

I just wanted to write and fine-tune my message of life balance in preparation for doing workshops and eventually a book. I actually didn't think anyone would actually read the blog! Now I have a couple hundred followers (11K+ visitors) including people I know "in real life." In a way, it makes me a little self-conscious... but I still love doing it.
