How long does it take you to write a post?

Just started blogging and I find I'm getting sucked into it. Wow. I'll be doing some research on one idea, and then I'll hit some other blogs, and before you know it, what started with one post, has blossomed into 4 or 5 different potential posts...
Gotta focus, and I know that, but, how much time does it take for you to write a post? What's your secret?

I'm like Anok. It depends on how much research is needed. My "Road to the 2008 Kentucky Derby" rankings are a labor of love. I just finished, mind you, and it took me over 4 hours to update. I'm freakin' exhausted. Heading out for a smoke.
Should I toss a link in since it applies to the conversation? Oh what the hey, it took 4 hours, man!!!

Wow. That's a lot of work - it's quite lengthy. So when you do a post about the road to the 2008 Kentucky Derby, is it better to keep content all in one long post, or to break in up into smaller posts. I mean, it could have easily been a separate post for each contest - but I guess there's SEO benefit to having it all in one post? (Is that why those spammy looking advertisement sites that I get when I click on Google Ads have all the "buy-now-limited-time-offer" stuff in one long page?

I do seperate posts about each race both before and after, but the post above is a consolidated rankings as of right now (my opinion). In that sense it's best to keep them together so that folks have all information in one spot. It actually mirrors a page I keep as well, but I've found that folks like the posts denoting when a weekly update to the rankings have been made.

Took me about five minutes to write my latest post, but it isnt very good and I'm going to edit it when I get to my hotel in a few hours.
Normally its about 5-20 minutes finding/creating an image and about 5-30 minutes writing.-
So do you publish it, and then go back and edit it, or do you just save it as a draft and only release it when it's "perfect"?
Sometimes I go back and edit previous posts... is that resending it out into the world over and over again to annoy readers, or since it's a RSS feed anyways, it just updates in their feed reader as a previous post, so it's not really noticable?

It depends for me as well,
For my cooking blog a "post" can take up to 3 days to complete when you factor in making the dish, getting/editing photos, writing up the recipe and then adding a bit of commentary.
for a "normal" post of around 500-800 words on one of my blogs that does not involve any research I probably spend 10 to 30 minutes, barring distractions (Frequent with a 19 month old!) -
I get up at 5:30 or 6 in the morning and write first thing before my day starts. I write about what is happening in the art studio and my painting life, and post pictures that are either reference photos or paintings in progress, so it doesn't take me long. I would say twenty minutes or a little more after I read the news online.

Depends. Some posts require extensive research. Some of my posts require my lawyer's input before they get published just cause of the nature of the subject matter discussed.
-
That's interesting. I skimmed through some of your blogs... what kind of issues do you get your lawyer's input about before you publish? The DUI blog? If your lawyer's on the clock - how do you recover the cost in the blog? Are your blogs successful enough that you're generating revenue to cover the cost of a lawyer? wow.

I prefer sub headings. clear white space. bullets. catchy titles.
That way I can just skim the post and if something grabs my eye, boom.
It's a good question, and it's one I need to keep in mind when I blog run-on sentences. Your right. I tend to get tired during the long posts, but I tend to produce them too. Hmm. Food for thought

So... Maybe a better question, is how long do you spend revising your post before you publish? Do you ever go back and edit a publish post when you notice a mistake?
Copyblogger had an awesome post about things to do to tighten up your post (www.copyblogger.com/10-blogging-questions/)... Sigh. I know it's quality or quantity, but sometimes with life getting in the way, it feels like there's never enough time to actually blog. -
I'm thinking if I rode public transportation to blog school, I would be on the short bus. It usually takes me several hours, often spread over two days, by the time I revise and actually have it posted. But sadly, it takes me more time editing/cutting out length than the writing itself. I get so passionate about some of the topics I discuss, that I have a very hard time keeping my posts super short...I try not to go over 1,500 - 1,800 words.
Maybe I'll eventually hone my skill and get to ride the "normal" bus with the rest of you kids! -
Ok. How long does it take you to do a sponsored post?
We've tended to go with PayPerPost because some of those opportunities are 50 words long. (Smorty, I think, is 250 words?)
I'm kinda amazed at what I can get away with: piss off is a good example.

Sometimes we'll even blog about their campaign on PayPerPost and whether it'll really drive traffic to their site (i.e. safariland holsters).

Then again, we just use the sponsored post cash to pay our readers $25, so I guess that's why they put up with it.
So, for those of you who do sponsored posts - how long does it take you to write one up, and do you find it an effective way to make money on your site? -
I don't do sponsored posts. It can take me anywhere from 10 minutes to write and edit a pet peeve rant to four hours to stop following a breadcrumb trail of related topics and actually pick somthing about which to write. Sometimes I get so interested in my research that I forget why I started reading in the first place.

Writing the post itself takes 1-2 max. Revising approximately 30 minutes. But I read a lot of diet and health books for my blog, so that takes up a lot of my free time, approximately 4-5 hours a week. I basically switch my love for sci-fiction novels for diet and health books.
My biggest problem is that I have trigger happy post fingers. I tend to post before I have enough time to think about a good title. So most of the time, I am only mildly happy with my titles. But since I published it on my blog already, I just leave it.
