Well, after reading books by Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins etc. I have came to conclusion that I should start declaring myself as an atheist. Religion has imposed so much bad stuff during the history and as one of my friends said if there were no such enormous obstacles that religion had put in motion during the medieval ages we would probably have had the Internet in 15th century.
I wounder how the people, who decided to come out as atheist deal with declaring that to friends and family. For me, it's not easy, for sure.

Well I'm not an atheist, but I am a Wiccan. I agree that so much bad stuff has gone on in the name of organized religion. The church is given way too much power.I made the same decision to reject organized religion and find my own path and my own beliefs. It was hard at first to tell my christian family about my choice but they understand and although they don't agree they leave me alone about it.

I think aetheists are just as silly as the religious zealots...Aetheism is perhaps the silliest religion...

atheism is not a religion. it is from the greek word "atheos" meaning "godless," indicating a lack of belief in the existence of a deity. i don't think that's so silly -- many intelligent, educated people conclude after study and thought that religion is, at best, emotionally hopeful folklore, and at worst, a basis for war.
you know what's silly? telling other people how to live or what to believe. some of us spend our whole lives asking questions, trying to figure out what to believe... not an easy task, on any path.
I think Albert Einstein said it best: "For me, it is enough to wonder at the secrets."

I would like to express my respectful disagreement with this statement above.
It's my position that every belief system on earth can and ought to be examined, critiqued and weighed and measured. It's also my position that one ought to stick to critiquing the belief system, as opposed to the believers, but I do acknowledge that at times it's hard to separate the two.
When it comes to being silly one would have to be deaf, dumb and blind not to recognize that those who embrace the Abrahamic religions display religious intolerance towards those of ALL other faiths, and also declare atheism to be a religion, when it isn't.
It seems obvious that they do this so they can personally attack criticize atheists (people) for their lack of belief in the unproven existence of and array of supernatural beings (gods, angels, demons, etc.).
Christians do this despite the fact that they attest that they are under a commandment to love their neighbors as they love themselves.
They do this despite the fact they claim it's no longer they that live but Christ that lives in them.
A likely story? I don't think so.
When it comes to silliness lets take a close look at a single belief system, supposedly the one with the most members in the world today.
Christianity is rooted in the myth that a supernatural being, who is omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent AKA a big guy in the sky created all there is including mankind declared them very good,
and later condemned mankind to the hell fires of damnation (original sin) because two were bad when one listened to a snake and both ate an apple,
and did so just so he could appear on earth as his own son born of a (cough) virgin (possibly impregnated by another non-existent supernatural being called an angel) to fulfill the role of savior,
and rescue a select few members of mankind, who were chosen before the foundations of time, from the same hell fires of damnation at end times created by himself, if and only if they believe in him.
Silly? What could be sillier?

I've also read Dawkins, and compared many religious texts. I was raised a certain way, but thought it best to explore many others. Still pondering, myself. I definitely agree technology would be FAR more advanced if churches interfered less. It's amazing to think someone was once accused of heresy for saying our planet is round! But that pretty much sums up the science vs. religion relationship, then and now!

Hello, turnem! I'm an atheist. I have been for about 12 years, or since I was 15 years old. But, only a few years ago did I "come out" to my Catholic parents. And since then, I have deconverted my sister. More good info on religion/ spirituality can be found in the show, "Penn & Teller's Bullshit!" on Showtime. Also, check out stuff on the James Randi Education Foundation website. My parents were pretty cool about it, except my mom makes some sly comments every so often.

None of my friends, fortunately wear religion on their sleeves.. Being an atheist and "coming out" to them was not a big deal.. most of them are religious, some aren't but we hardly talk about religion, so no issue there..
My family though, are a different story...
My father thought I was joking and never took my atheism seriously and forced me to pray and go to temples till I took a stand.. now, he is just waiting for me to *grow up* and start believing in god again. like that is ever gonna happen.. -
The whole God thing seems silly to me, but there's a lot of wisdom and beauty in religion. Reflections on human destiny and death and the ultimate meaning of life. I think we're all at least a little interested and concerned with those things-I know I am. I don't think we can blame religion for all the horror or ignorance or injustice in the world. I think we have to dig deeper-into human nature.

I would say that I'm more Agnostic than Atheist.
I'd like to believe that there is something fabulously wonderfully superior and special...
But I certainly don't think our current or past religions have uncovered it or represent it...
And I do believe that religion has destroyed everything.
RELIGION = Power, greed and corruption to me
So - I cannot believe in religion.
But I so wish that there was something that was WONDERFUL that I cannot call myself an ATHEIST.
I don't know if that makes sense... But it is the only way I can explain it. -
Me too. Actually more antitheist than atheist.

I have no problem being open about any aspects of my personality. I'm not ashamed of anything or afraid of others' reactions. If someone has a problem with me, that's their problem. -
