there is so many different answers for this that no one can say for sure. But it takes approx 4 times as many muscles to frown than smile
    1. MadameX
Which means that frowning is MUCH better exercise!
    2. crkian
So I do have something to thank the kids for
    3. lvs
yes i think we must all conclude the frowning gives more exercise and probably frown more :-(

    @crkian
    Are you a lawyer? I need numbers.LOL
@MadameX - other ways to exercise if you have health in mind.
    1. MadameX
      Nope, agape...that's me (the lawyer)

Just thinking about what the message we're sending is when we point out that it takes far fewer muscles to smile than frown and imply that that means we should smile. Take the easy way? Don't exert any more effort than is necessary?

I don't recall the exact numbers, but they're somewhere in the neighborhood of 14 to smile and 42 or 47 to frown.

it takes even less to reach out and smack the #$%#@
  4. agapelife
O Chris happy birthday. Children make you smile, then they become teens - then the frowns appear.
  5. satijournal
It takes only one muscle: the frown muscle, located in the head-bone.
  6. agapelife
@ Yes it does begin in the head but we are talking about muscles, not neurons or the nervous system.

So why put so much effort into the frown when you can "turn it upside down" and make so many people happy! I think I learned that when I was a Brownie back in the olden days.
  8. agapelife
You're right but what is your answer, teacher - in numbers?LOL

    @csuinatc
Are you in the right discussion ? - the smacking the "ear" is getting more attention than this harmless one.

17 to frown and 12 to smile.
    1. lvs
so does it mean it is better to frown because you are exercising more muscles?
    2. Theresa111
It means that you are more likely to develop frown lines on your face, before laugh lines.
  12. lvs
i think two upper and lower lip like this :((
  13. agapelife
Thanks for the comments folks, but no one has come up with the right number of muscles for the Frown. So riverstyxxx, would we be smiling if we ate that smiling luncheon meat?? They should display the vegetables in the form of a smile too!
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
I think I'm scared by that luncheon meat.

How many muscles does it take to run away really fast?
  14. lamenews
    just1, cause 1 is the loneliest #
  15. agapelife
Approx. 2 HRS 15 MINS you will have the right answers.@Ivs, you have a great smile and no,frowning exercises are harmful. @ lamenews - the number is not right but all the muscles effort, I agree with you that Frowners are the loneliest. Would you likely keep company with someone who frowns much or a person who smiles or even better laughs much?
  16. Shiley
If you just came from the dentist 0 more effort to smile
  17. agapelife
Shiley, I hear you but from what I know of you - you are smiling internally and when the sensation returns to your mouth, the hidden smiles and laughter will express themselves in a great belly laugh. LOL

It takes, from what I hear, much more muscle and effort to frown than to smile.

But remember, for those among us that prefer to NOT exert ourselves if at all possible, it takes absolutely NONE to just sit there with a blank expression on our face.

    Viva la laziness!
