I've spent around $200 so far on domain, hosting, and light promotion/contest. I plan on increasing my ad dollars. Was just wondering how much you guys have spent promoting your blogs.

Er just hosting really for mattnutts oh and the domain name, and I brought a dollar ad on a tetsujins blog this morning through focial
  2. DOUGGOFFdotCOM
Wow you could have just given me that 200 bucks. I would get you some traffic Seriously though my site has been up for years and I actually just recently turned it into a blog. I spend about 8 bucks a month.
  3. kopidunia
$14.95/mo for my 5 blogs on typepad.com (Pro account, unlimited # of blogs), $100/yr for securing a bunch of possible domain names for future blogs, plus tried $50 on Adwords for a couple of months, not that it helped much.
  4. Joliveira
just host and domain... for now
  5. legbamel
Not a penny. It's a hobby and an experiment, a creative outlet. It's the cheapest hobby I've ever had!
  6. careysaysums
I've spent $125'ish with Squarespace. I could've done it for free, though. Hindsight. Learn a little--first--or you'll pay a lot.:)
  7. Xight
About... $300? 150 for domain (paid for the next 5 years). And 2 year hosting. So I don't gotta worry about it for a while.

I hear ya about adwords, though this month I only spent $3, and made $16 from it. Good return, now if only I can do that X1000, and I'll be set.
    1. kopidunia
Hm...think I need to hone my adwords hehe
  8. kristilinauer
None...I use blogger, and it's free. I'm about to put about $150 into it with my first reader contest, though. That should be interesting.
  9. chicdesigncafe
I actually have a few blogs but the one I post to the most www.chicdesigncafe.com cost me 9.99 to secure the domain name. My hosting is free through Blogger. I have plans on creating contests where I do a give away to encourage my readers, gain new ones and create more fun for the blog.
  10. stationatomica
Hmm, just domain name registration and one month of hosting so far. I am pretty cheap so I don't see myself doing much more than the minimum.
  11. aliasinkhorn
Nearly two months, often into the wee early morn, learning CSS, experiments with hacks, endless widgets, code changes, and enough reloads to bust my ADSL monthly rate Otherwise nothing :-)
  12. ModelElaine
I've spent countless hours at the rate of my last full time employment it would be $25/h times 16 hours a day
    1. WT
Oh my Elaine! When I look at it like that, it is too depressing. But it is fun and I have learned a lot!
  13. acousticguitarist
it cost me a lot for the two big Greek columns out the front of my blog and the marble statue of Apollo :-)
    1. acousticguitarist
and i'm going for a dome on top and a giant telescope
  14. mtchick
    Not a penny.
  15. libdrone
depends. If only counting actual cash paid out of pocket about 20 dollars registering my domain in .com .net .org and .info. If counting the time I've put into it and assume my time is worth the legal minimum wage here in Washington, about $5500 invested
  16. Kiwipulse
Around $150 to maintenance and services, I earn back $300. Not so bad for the moment
  17. ayouthofvalour
eight bucks for the domain mastersofseo.com
  18. JoyChaser
$10 for the domain, $90 for the hosting, but so far, that's all.
  19. wehireu
Nothing at all. I intend to keep it that way for a while.
  20. iamthelostgirl
None, i'm too poor to spend on a blog that doesn't earn its keep!
  21. PetLvr
I spend a lot hosting now that i have to have a dedicated server and all that .. plus domain renewals is another cost .. But - that has helped me double my traffic since Sept/2007

But as for advertising - I think I've spent about $300-$400 in total for 2007 and everytime a campaign ends .. I grind my teeth and bonk my head on a wall wondering why the heck I just wasted the money. I think for 2008 .. I might spend a little money .. if i can say, spend 5% or small percentage like that and increase traffic 55% ...I will try again. But, if the next time I try and spend 5% and get about 1% increase in traffic, I'll give up for good and go to some BloggerAdvertisingAnonymous meetings.
  22. kkusnier
HA! no one wants to know what i have put in !!! and i have very little traffic.. almost none!!
  23. sminut13
i'm the same as kkusnier. i spent nothin n i have little traffic. i think. need to check out analytics hehe.
  24. ManicAttackArt
I'm so new to blogging. I don't even understand how you can make money doing it much less spend money making it!
  25. sminut13
i'm the same manicattack, i jus know tht u can put in ads once u get googles approval for adsense. n others but i don know how ro make use of them.
  26. tetsujin
Officially, 12 dollars so far in registering the domain over the years. Otherwise, I have all the hosting in my parents basement using their bandwidth they never use. And I found the server in a garbage can and put a buttload of ram in it and then installed linux. So pretty much free as a bird.

Did buy an ad for a Dollar on mattnutts.com through www.focial.com though. So big investment. ^_^

  27. Puffmatty
    $6 beer/night
  28. furniture27
I am really in the minority here. I am up over a $1000 now on my blog with my new redesign I just went through.
  29. wehireu
Hmm, I try and redesign my own blog, it helps me learn more about computers. Because it costs nothing I can afford to mess up.
  30. lamenews
about $50 for domain (2years) and hosting (1 year)
  31. friedclyde
iv spent $0 and i have got $400 back, im smart i use blogger hahaha
    1. Joliveira
how long did you take to make $400?
  32. ImBloggingThat
4 blogs, $7.14 each for the domain name.
$25 in a SponsoredReviews account to hire bloggers.

Hosting is free... as long as my hosting customers continue to pay their bills!

Branding means everything to me so I can't use something like Blogger, or WordPress.com. It's gotta be self-hosted...
  33. voodooKobra
$0.00 for hosting (My hosting account is filed under kobrasrealm.net, so I can claim $0.00 :P)
    $19.80 for the domain.
    $0.00 for ad promotion
$0.00 for everything else people blow their money on in an attempt to garner traffic.

In short, about $20 for the cost of the domain name.
  34. mikesilvia
I bought my Zune Blog for $2,000.
    www.zuneinfo.com

    I spend $60 a year for hosting.
    1. kopidunia
Now that's a true Zune fan speaking :-) I still love my iPod :-) I hope it's worth it, the site looks like it could attract a lot of traffic.
    2. shadowknight
iPod for me, then again I use a Mac personally. I only use Microshonk product if I have too, like fore work, although I often run my virtual pc up on the Mac heh.
  35. shadowknight
I do not keep tabs on it. If I did I am sure the requisite music and alcohol will far exceed the technical costs.
  36. Shardul
    $ 0 ..
he he !!!... just the inter bill around $ 10 !!!

    The Bloggers Magazine
    www.bloggersmagazine.blogspot.com/
  37. naren
    i only pays for hosting
  38. MeghnaK
Spent no money. Earned no money

But put in lot of hard work & time and earned little traffic!!
  39. sminut13
same as meghnak there. hehe but am really jealous of the one who got back 400. man
  40. dpasquella
Spent $0 and made money from linking my book from Amazon and **very little money** from Adsense.

Of course, it's "blogspot", not a personalized domain name.
  41. lad4872
Im a bit depressed, after reading all these comments, the vibe I'm getting is that no one has made a significant return on their investment, no matter how small. Except for the $400 guy... hope that wasn't over the span of a couple years.
    1. MadameX
Well, I don't think that the vast majority of people who regularly post in these forums are in blogging for the money.
  42. VampireFaust
    Just money for the hosting.
  43. bloggernoob
i've made $2000 with my blog. It's barely 2 months old. i've spent only around 200 dollar for hosting domain and promotion. Don't lose hope
    1. Joliveira
      and do you use adsense?
  44. lad4872
That brings up a question, Am I wrong in thinking that Adsense will not let you use other monetizing links like pay per post and adbright on the same site?

I am using Adsense and I thought that was the only advertising method I could use on one site.
    1. Kiwipulse
You can use any advertising method that you want, just you respect the TOS of google. By the way, visit the website of the big blogger such as Problogger, John Chow, Shoemoney...They have plenty of article to read and you can learn more about blogging and advertising.
    2. bloggernoob
problogger probably has the most info for that type of stuff. johnchow is useless for that
  45. coolpcguy
Put in about $20($12 for hosting, $8 for domain name,-- this is for this entire year), have received about $125 in AdSense. Not bad eh for a person who runs a blog on Linux & openSource
  46. bloggernoob
i hate adsense. don't work on my site. i think it's a waste on most sites. adsense is very overrated and useless. you can mix adsense with a lot of different monetizing methods. you can do paid posting and adsense, you can do affiliate links and adsense. kontera, widgetbucks all are compatible with adsense. coolpcguy. that's great for a linux and opensource blog. you should be writing a make money blog too.
  47. ilovethatrecipe
I only pay for hosting and domain name
  48. thegnr
Be the master of your domain. Don't use free blog hosting companies, they have full control over your blogs and can cancel your account for any reason. I customized a template
and I host my blog on my own server $0
  49. coolpcguy
Well Kontera and WidgetBucks don't get along well for a Linux blog, neither does Chitika(started using it recently). Will be launching another blog under a subdomain, where I can use them. Also have another blog, authored by a friend of mine on politics and music coming up soon, again on a sub domain(fredhead.sathyasays.com) so guess I can make use of them there

  51. mohdhafez
i'm planning to host my blog (www.mohdhafez.net) at my own server, maybe next year.
  52. bloggernoob
how much you guys spending on your own servers
    1. ImBloggingThat
For me, one server is about $160 a month and worth every single penny!
  53. bittertruth
only 8 bucks for my domain... and my time and patience. umm..
  54. estertey
nothing for my mydaysinmymind.blogspot.com and $10.00 for my domain site teyonlinejournal.com... thats it...
  55. amborg
I have paid nothing out of pocket except for my time.
  56. ID4ID4
Right now I'm spending $150/month on hosting, but that is a cost spread across 10 sites. I'd love to have cheaper hosting, but my main blog ( freesampleforager.com ) is high traffic and needs the beefier server to handled things smoothly. Plus, being a linux sysadmin, I "need" to have complete control over my environment
  57. brigid
    Nothing. Zilch. Nada.

Unless you count time, effort, and internet connection costs. Don't know how I'd be able to divide the latter into relative parts, though, since I do a lot of other things online.

I suppose there's also the cost of paper, since I draw my comic the old fashioned way before adding screen tones and text in PhotoShop. I usually use scratch paper, though, so that point is slightly moot, too.
  58. tikirob
I spend around $15.00/month and I make $15.00/month so nothing at this point.
  59. DeansDesignIdeas
    0 dollars so far!
  60. DrowseyMonkey
    zero for me too.
  61. jims
zero. But thats why I have such a low trafic.
  62. BlogBadly
I've spent 10 bucks for buying the domain. My dad already has hosting and he lets me use his for everything.

    And thats pretty much it

I have, of course, made back all of my domain money so it's all upwards from here.
  63. MamaFloSATX
    Cost is relative.
Spending time online is less expensive than going out for dinner and a movie considering there would be the cost of childcare and fuel too.
  64. Sylvia
I use blogger so zero on the blog itself, I tweaked a free blogger template.

The only money I spend is about $20 a week to advertise.
  65. bloggernoob
seems like a lot of blogger on blogcatalog don't spend any money. a few do on just the domain. and even fewer on domain and hosting. i guess i'm the only idiot who spends money marketing my blog.
    1. Sylvia
Noob, I have been thinking about hosting my own domain, but I am scared to it. I am finally number 1 on several keywords, and google just seems to index blogger blogs so quickly.

I know have to do it though, because one of my blogs is making a good $$$$ per month now, and not owning the blog is a big concern.
    2. BlogBadly
      Yeah noob, sheesh.

Free advertising is the way to go!
  66. Hippychikky
10 bucks for a year of domain.
90 bucks for a year of hosting.
speaking my mind and loving it. PRICELESS
  67. juliemo
    $10 domain
    $32 traffic blazer

I have gained that amount back already out of my blog too.
  68. Majik
About 20% of the small amount I have earned from blogging.
  69. arindra
I am currently trying to get some other writer / contributor to my blog , so it will rack up some expense around 50 USD a month at least , the domain name for the blog www.phpcafe.net/blog/ was froma client . friend who let ot expire . i have my own servers so dont pay anything for that .
  70. trueyoumarketing
5 Dollars for the hosting at www.site5.com best hosting price and service on the planet. We host 82 sites for the 5.00. Domain was 6 at godaddy, and the template we modified was by Brian Gardner for I think 50.00 so that is 61.00. All the plugins we run, sharethis, similarposts, alinks, wp-seo, google analytics for wp, blogcatalog, sphere, blogrush, and wordpress itself etc. were all free.

    site is our www.trueyoumarketing.com
  71. Jturnmerich
not a single penny for my blogs.. Google compensate my tools
    wisdomof-love.blogspot.com
  72. celhub
I did not spend anything on my blog
