How Much Effort Should You Put Into Mending A Friendship Before You Just End It?

I was just having this conversation with a co-worker today. She felt that you should immediately end the friendship once the friend starts to cause you grief. I feel you should attempt to mend fences, especially if it is a close friend. What do you guys think?

I think it depends on the nature of the problem. Irritations can be worked past; major disconnects in values can't.

Essentially there are 3 approaches one can choose to take:
eliminate (end the friendship);
cope (grit your teeth and ignore the behavior);
negotiate (state your discomfort with the behavior, request an appointment to discuss and try to resolve the issues amicably).
Without hearing the positions of both people I will not make a recommendation. -
