I was just having this conversation with a co-worker today. She felt that you should immediately end the friendship once the friend starts to cause you grief. I feel you should attempt to mend fences, especially if it is a close friend. What do you guys think?

    Hmm. One fight between guys ends before the day ends.

      Lol, it's true you guys generally end these things fast. Then again, you guys are not as emotional as we are.

    your co-worker must not have many friends...

      I don't think that that is a fair statement. She only meant that a friendship is not really a friendship anymore when it becomes one sided and not mutually respectful.

    I think it depends on the nature of the problem. Irritations can be worked past; major disconnects in values can't.

      Unfortunately, the friendship that we were discussing has undergone a major disconnect...

    It seems to me it all depends on the friendship. I have friends I would move mountains to keep in my life and acquaintances who get dropped so freely and completely that I never notice they are gone. I don't think this is a question you can generalize about.

    Essentially there are 3 approaches one can choose to take:
    eliminate (end the friendship);
    cope (grit your teeth and ignore the behavior);
    negotiate (state your discomfort with the behavior, request an appointment to discuss and try to resolve the issues amicably).
    Without hearing the positions of both people I will not make a recommendation.

      This is really good advice. I like putting it in terms of these three options.

    If I had that conversation with a co-worker, it would end with me giving them a look as if they were mentally inept, stupid, or just plain (get ready for the politically incorrect term) RETARDED!

    I usually put way too much effort into it and always pay for it in the end

      Yeah, I am a person who will try to mend the friendship many times and I think it is bad for me in the end.
