I know for a fact that a lot of people don't comment enough on blog posts, even though it could benefit you in more ways than one www.datmoney.com/2008/03/never-underestimate-commenting.html but how often do you guys actually comment on blogs?

Could you give some examples? For instance, if you read 10 blogs in a day, how many times would you comment out of those 10?

Most likely 8 or 9 times out of 10.

      Well, that's only because you're a gem ;-)

Not nearly as often as I should. I tend to soak up so much information from all the great blogs I visit I just go on my marry way with my head buzzing.

I mean, it's understandable that sometimes you also just don't have anything to say. I'm like that sometimes and I would rather not say "hey, great post... bye!"

Being a firm believer in that when a person takes the time to dredge up the courage to create a story line or to tell or share what is happening to them or about them, they do deserve to have feed-back on their endeavors. Not all people were born to write without effort and the fact that they are trying is a clear indication that they want an audience, no matter how small their reader pool is.

To write is one of the best ways of showing self-expression. It can develop someone's character into that of self assurance and actually bring someone out of their shell. It is therapeutic and a blessing. And when the words do not flow easily, it can be a bit frustrating.

To answer your question frankly, I chose to leave some type of review, comment or note in a shout box, to let someone know their work has not gone unnoticed. Very few times I am in too much of a hurry to not write at all. But I do visit and try to enjoy as much of your beauty and sharing as possible. So, I too, am in agreement that more readers should indeed leave word, and take the writing time to appreciate others hard work. Cheers!

      Theresa,

Very good post. Having started my own blog last November, the very few comments I have received always make my day. Everyone is not born to write and in a day and age when people ridicule everyone so easily, especially over the internet, it takes courage to open oneself up like that.

I look forward to the point where there is on-going dialogue between myself, posters, and everyone in between. When I find blogs I like and I can relate, I post on them so they will post again and realize people know they exist.

FYI I was using the word should as in a nice gesture to encourage our BlogCatalog writers. That is why I love this community so much. Because here, everyone's light gets to shine

I am not relating to the idea that people should comment more. I appreciate that people take the time to comment on my blog, and I will comment when I feel it relevant (and most certainly pop over to their blog and thank them). I only have so much time in the day (as do others) and the least of it is a conscious decision that I MUST comment on every blog I visit and more than I feel necessary.

I am just happy people bother to visit my blog in the first place comment or no comment.

I am wondering about the "should" part. I guess I am having a wee bit difficulty with the idea that any one of us deserves the right to a response/comment by virtue of posting a blog. We chose to do so without condition, yes? I use by blog as a visual platform for visual art and love doing it, as well as get enormous pleasure knowing my mum and sis overseas enjoy it. I put a lot into it, and it is lovely that people take the time to visit, but why are we owed a comment? Do you really have time to comment on every blog you visit?

ditto jafabrit. I comment on a blog because I genuinely like the blog. I'm not going to always give a grand speech or whatever. We don't leave comments on web pages what makes blogs any different? I have 3 blogs and 3 kids. I don't want to write another blog I just want you to know I appreciate you.
    3. jafabrit
I agree shirley, when I can I might let a blogger know they have a nice blog, or say hi or let them know I appreciate something, but I balk at the "should" part.

I read over 50 blogs... I comment on about 90% of them. I only subscribe to blogs I like (and find myself visiting a lot) so usually I have something to say in response to the post I'm reading.

When someone new drops by my blog and leaves a comment, I usually do the same. And sometimes, I really like what they have to say and I'll wind up being a regular reader.
    1. whojaybe
Wow, you're a gem too! I might just have to comment on your blog just to get your attention ;-)

I usually try to comment once or twice a day on a the blogs I read. I probably don't comment as much as others, but I do comment.

Commenting is something that I do if I enjoy reading a post. I should comment more often, but I don't, unfortunately.

I have a pretty high threshold for commenting.

The post needs to have said something which was so exceptionally good as to warrant praise, or raised a point to which something could reasonably be added.

That doesn't happen very often: maybe between 1 in 100, to 3 in 100?

I don't see comments as a measure of success or failure in a post - although I'm (sometimes) pleased to see them after my posts.

I do see the number of viewers - better yet, repeat viewers - as important. And rewarding.

I comment when the topic truly interests me and feel that I can add to the discussion.

I almost always comment. If someone takes the time to post..and I have the chance to read it..I try to find something to say back. Very rarely do I not comment.

I leave a few words about 2 or 3 times out of every 10. Gotta do better than that.

I always try to comment if I can add to the conversation. Though sometimes, the comments already left cover nearly everything I would have said. I'm guilty of not leaving a comment in that case. Saying I agree with X, Y, and Z without anything to add in extending the conversation seems self serving in my eyes.

You're right, plus, a lot of the times if you disagree it'll catch more peoples attention.

I comment on every blog in my roll every other day, at least (as it takes about 2 hours to get through them all.) I only comment on others when I have a comment to make (which is also fairly often.)
In a similar vein, it's clear from many comments that I get that people just really DON'T read content (even though I keep my posts short.)
  15. oivvayblog
I try to comment on the blogs I read as much as I can. I appreciate the comments on my own blog, so I try to return the favor. Although I do have days where even if I've enjoyed a post, I just can't think of anything witty or intelligent to add to the discussion. On those days, I end up just lurking.

That being said, I'm still relatively new to this blogging thing, and there are only 12-15 blogs I read on a regular basis. So it's not like I have my work cut out for me.
    1. TheSmallBizGuru
True, there are certainly days when I just want to read things and not post. Heck, sometimes the posts aren't worth commenting on either. I probably have a few of those myself.

As long as you build a solid following, the readers will post when they see fit. You cannot bank of people simply glancing at your blog. By providing worthy and relevant things to read, you'll build your base and then your blog.
