How often do you do a total renewal of your blog?

I may be due for one soon. I have a lot of things which I need to update.

My site is still somewhat new (put it up in July 2009). I already redid it once in August. It wasn't just a graphical update but an overhaul of what the focus was, which I basically broadened.

I'd like to stick to changing it up once or twice a year at most. Although, I'm having a hard time not changing it again because there always feels like there are adjustments to made and I'm tempted to revert back to the original focus of the site. Can be a bit frustrating!

I ended up moving my energies into a new site (with a totally different focus) and making it the way I envision changing the current. I feel I need to give the current site some more time to settle before I reevaluate what I want to do with it, otherwise I would probably be changing it drastically every other month lol.

I try and update the site at least once a year - or once every 6 months... Depending on my needs and my visitors.

I have deleted about 5 blogs prior to my current one. Trash em like nothing. I doubt I will be doing so with this one however.

it's harder to "renew" as time goes on, and every bit helps as you go along day to day.

EG on one of my blogs I have over 3500 posts, almost 3300 tags, over 100 categories and I've been trying to figure a way to "renew" this down to 16 categories.

I have only done two re-designs in two and a half years. petlvr, I hear you about having umpteen tags and I too struggled to restrain myself from adding more and more and more categories. I think I've managed to keep it down to a usable number but it is always a challenge.

I use roughly a katrillion tags, but only display about 15 high-level ones.

I'm working on the redesign now, cutting down to 16 categories, but my tag problem will probably never be fixed, and I'll never have another tag cloud - or, rather working tag cloud. I used to have about 4000 tags and slowly been deleting ones that are obviously useless.

It all happened when I upgraded my blog from 1.5+ to a 2.1+ version in one step before tags were being used, and was automatically created for me - like, including ... "a", "the", and other non-tag words.

Total renewal? I'm not sure what that means. If it means dumping everything and starting over from scratch then I do have an answer. I've been contemplating doing a total renewal for, well - years. lol

What is a total renewal mean?
I started at blogspot and moved I guess that was my first change years ago. You mean redo the theme?
I don't mess around with the blog too much I don't really tag or worry about much though I tend to be a bit of a theme changer. I haven't found a theme I felt right in since my original blogger blog.
