As I've gone through to look at some blogs, I've noticed a strange duality in posting frequency. (Granted, the sample size is relatively small -- a couple of dozen chosen kind of randomly.)

I find some blogs get updated maybe once a week, or once every few weeks. Then I find others that are updated many times per day. I've found only a couple that are updated just once per day. (I, personally, post once a day.)

When I see blogs updated only infrequently (once a week or less often), I wonder how they keep readers -- many of these blogs have several comments on each post.

When I see blogs updated multiple times a day, I wonder how do readers keep up -- many of these blogs, also, have several comments on each post.

So, my questions are:

How do blogs with slow updates (once a week or less) keep readers?

How do readers keep up with rapid (twice a day or more) updates?

Thanks,
Bullgrit

Well, I personally chose what I read based on quality and/or relative interest, not update frequency.

I really don't have time to read every blog I like every day, and certainly not to read it multiple times per day, so I think less frequent is good (though, definitely, if more than a week or so goes by, I'm likely to forget about it for a while....)

maybe the question is what do your readers want and does it really matter?

Hummm, I blogged last Wednesday and then Sunday, I have a couple of blogs though and I really don't have time to blog all the time, I work and go to school. If i started posting total shit just to post daily my readers wouldn't read it anyway. I like when my regualr reads post only a couple times a week I do have a few posting daily and it is hard to keep up with them.

I post as often as I can, but since my blog mostly features my artwork it can be a little slow to update. I have projects for clients to do and my "9 to 5" job to keep up with, so getting new art done to showcase on my blog can take some time. It ends up being once or twice a week if I'm lucky, though.

I prefer your way of posting once a day. I promote my article as much as I can and that's what gets me the hits - if not the comments.

It depends on what you are blogging about.

If you blog about current events, your readers will expect frequent updates.

If you blog about something which is unlikely to change, like new theories in physics (sorry, can't think of a better example at the moment), a few posts a year might be sufficient to hold a subscriber list of several hundred readers.

I'm a once or twice a day blogger, and I think most of my readers use an RSS feed rather than trying to remember to check my blog. I use google reader to keep up with other bloggers, and check it daily so it doesn't matter if someone only posts rarely, when they post something, I know about it.

On the other hand I have a lot of trouble keeping up with bloggers who post multiple times per day. And they're the ones that seem to write really long posts, too. I just don't have the mental energy to devote that much time and thought to one blog. I prefer blogs that post between once a day and once a week.

eeks, I just realized I answered "once or twice a day" - should be week, I'm not nearly that prolific or good at writing. That coffee is not kicking in this morning! The point about using a reader is still the same though.

I would have to agree with annz if you have subscribers then they will get updated without really going to your blog... if they want to say something then they will go to post a comment.

I agree with JP. I make an entry perhaps once in a couple of weeks. It's the same interval in which I would hold a class on the subject I present, and it's the same from one year to the next. My blog doesn't depend on a daily readership.

I think it depends on what kind of a blog you have - I mean your subject.
Mine is Interior Design so pictures sometimes shows it all. We publish 2 posts a day.
Our readers come to see the latest in furniture, wall decor and home accessories. read design tips and get inspired.

I think blogs with longer posts and deeper content will be less often.

I post once a day, occasionaly skipping a day if I'm too busy. I'll rarely do more than one a day, if I want to post about more than one thing, I'll usually fit it all in the same daily post, or wait till the next day. I feel that several posts a day takes away from the blog. It's more about quality than quanity.
