I've been using the wordpress plugin WP-DB-Backup and emailing a backup every day from every blog I have to one of my gmail accounts. When the file gets too big though, it doesn't mail and remains in my wp-content/backups folder and I have to come periodically to copy it over to my local drive.

I tried to create a local wordpress back when it was version 1.5.2 and didn't have much success .. I think it's a good idea though, for testing template and duplicating data as you suggest - and might try again later this summer.

PS: .. I don't consider stuff like this forbidden! These are tips bloggers are looking for (after the many uses of Baking soda that is)

I use both the WXR export feature and the standard SQL file method.. One can never be too prudent when it comes to important content.
