a small amount. It's good for starting out.

I stopped the shameless blog promotions because I give everyone headaches with my technical analysis. I got tomatoes thrown at me last time for whipping out the pagerank formula.

But I agree, you will get people to READ your blog by posting it here. If done correctly this is a great way to promote, it should not be your only way, but just another tool in your arsenal

What other tools do you suggest?

whenever I write a new post I promote it on

      Digg
      Mixx
      StumbleUpon
      Twitter

And little ones that work only in my niche:
      WebDevVote.com
      ProgrammersHeaven.com

Also a good bet is article submission directories, just write up the post a little different and make sure u put a linkback in it.

Besides organic - I get most of my traffic from stumbleUpon. Sadly this traffic comes with an 80% bounce rate.

As for BC, I'm a big fan of broadcasts - this is great for me because only people who have 'friended' me have to look at it. So they must care a little about my niche if they clicked my name.

      OK Fine, heres my supertip

Use google alerts to find out where your niche is being talked about, instead of finding conversation, let it find you! Post on those forums and blogs. For me, I have alerts on Black hat SEO, Web Development, Google algorithm(yes I keep my eye on them to protect my readers from google-wrath)

How do you back link on Blogger.com.
    5. carsonfb
      @Codesucker

I have had the same experiences with StumbleUpon. I get a relatively high amount of traffic from them, but not many page views / visitor or repeat visitors.

It is great for letting people know about an article that would interest them, but not so great for getting steady traffic.
    6. codesucker
@fry - see TTs response below about backlinks.

@carsonfb - yup. I'm not completely sure why this is. I do notice a tremendous amount of traffic from stumble, but when I go to the review page for the article, it shows really only my buddies have thumbed up the page.. Did 600 people really just see the article and not ONE of them gave it a thumbs up or down?? doesn't make sense to me.

This stumbley traffic is inflated somehow and I'm going to get to the bottom of it through proper research, I will return to share my verdict on StumbleUpon
    7. becthomasphotograp
It might have to do with Stumble putting random pages in front of people and they just keep on going without really looking more then a glance.

A backlink is created when another site or a blog links back to your site or a post on it, and the value of that backlink is related to the PR ( pagerank) of the site linking back to yours.

The best linking strategy is to get a lot of non-reciprocal links (or one-way links), which are also relevant links to your site from high ranking and popular sites. When your site receives a lot of quality non-reciprocal links, the search engines consider your website and the web pages that receive these inbound quality links as containing highly valuable web content.

I prepared a post for the BC New Users group on linking and linking strategy. I want to encourage you to read it and to also read the posts linked to in it so you clearly understand what linking is and how to make decisions about linking.

What is the actual process of back linking on blogger.com?
    3. timethief
What do you mean by process? Is what you are asking actually how to create a hyperlink in a Blogger blog? If so here's the answer for you

    promote your blog with entrecard
    1. timethief
I disagree with you. There is great cause for concern about entrecard paid links and the management of entrecard. Most of their Moderators have left.

Please update your knowledge of the goings on at entrecard.

    2. codesucker
@goldmap - you just lost the internets. I firmly believe linking to entrecard through that widget is a kiss of death that will actually hurt instead of help your blog. It looks unprofessional too.
    3. ATraveler
Thanks for those info Timethief. I really thought entrecard works. But I guess we should not judge a book by its cover.

      @ATraveler
You're welcome. I'm sorry the news was bad but I did feel it was important to share it.
    5. FryeDaddy
      Share freely.

It is not the answer that any newcomer asking the question "how do I drive traffic to my blog?" wants to hear, but the best answer is to create high quality original content, tag it with appropriate keywords, make sure that Google and other search engines are spidering your site AND (this last bit is the really hard and frustrating part) wait for your search engine traffic to build. It WILL take time.

When I started my blog, most of my visitors were either personal friends or people I met and interacted with in forums like this one. After two years and 350 posts, I get 100--150 uniques per day that view 300--500 pages. (all of these arriving via search engines) There are no shortcuts, and yes this IS hard work.
    1. FryeDaddy
I agree. It has taken time to build unique vistors. I post almost daily. What about you?
  6. pinkmonkeychatter
Does it have to be me in the skimpy top or can I just crop a pic of Dolly Parton or something??
    1. codesucker
im so clicking on that avatar
    2. timethief
There are many bloggers, primarily but not always from India, who use sexy female avatars or cutesy baby avatars The "skimpy top" one is a 47 year old male.

    Primarily from India huh.

      Anyone?
    1. timethief
Ummm ... that site has a ZERO page rank and a ZERO Alexa ranking and contains links from many unrelated sites. I worry that it could be viewed by Google as a link farm. Also the bounce rate is likely to be very high. So if a blogger is looking for organic traffic I would suggest that they do not take the risk of submitting their links to sites that Google may not look favorably upon.

      Link Farms
A link farm consists of sites that link to other sites for the sole purpose of increasing their link popularity rating and ranking. Unlike perfectly valid links to sites with related information, sites that participate in link farming contain links to totally unrelated sites. This practice is also referred to as link stuffing. Google hates link farms and labels the links they generate as spam. In fact, Google hates them so much that some sites get removed from the index if they're affiliated with link farms. In other words, linking to a link farm can result in your site being banned entirely.

I think targeting a niche and the right social network is crucial to drive immediate traffic. Long term it's better to rely on Organic Traffic.

      This is traffic jam
    2. FryeDaddy
      Yes I would say so.

This is great advice. However, one must market and visit other blogs as well. I spend so much time promoting that there is not a lot of to write. I have learn a lot to improve my page. I love to fallow bloggers and for them to follow me. This is real traffic. drjalee53.blogspot.com/. It is also advantageous to promote each other as well.

Try blog carnivals and guest posting. It works wonders for both traffic and social networking.
