The most popular reason people use these things is to go to places they were banned, pretend to be someone else, and to stalk people at their blogs or forums.
I think it's pretty much bs that you have to hide your ip for any other reason. You can automatically clean your cookies and all your history out quite simply without a proxy so unless you live in a country where the government is going to put you in jail or you want to comment on something and don't want to be traced because of living in such a country, or unless you are an international spy, I can't see the need.-
