I have blogging since a half year ago, at first I just registered to free blog services like blogspot, wordpress. And I wrote my first article on those free blog service. Time through, I felt in love in writing and I decided to host it on my own domain.

But now, I have huge problem. The problem is to increase my blog traffic, I feel the traffic is too small, and there are only few comments leave there.

the question is.... Any idea to make it work?

    Here are some ways to promote your blog and increase your readership.
    A. Find Technorati on the web. Register and create an account, claim your blog(s), tag them, create a watchlist and register your favorite blogs. You will find that the site has excellent instructions to help you work through all the steps.

    B. Also be sure to register your blog so you get the attention of search engines. It is said that Google's directory comes straight from the DMOZ Directory so look into getting your blog site listed in it. The DMOZ, commonly known as the Open Directory Project has strict guidelines as to who is listed. Submission info can be found here.

    "If your site has been accepted into the Open Directory, it may take anywhere from 2 weeks to several months for your site to be listed on partner sites which use the Open Directory data, such as AOL Search, Google, Netscape Search, Yahoo Search, and hundreds of other sites. We make updates of the data available weekly, but each partner has their own update schedule."

    You should *not* submit your site to Google, Yahoo, and MSN more than once every 30 days.

    Although www.google.com/addurl/ Google says that manually submitting your pages to their index is unnecessary, they have an interface for you to do so. But don't be surprised if it takes months for Google to acknowledge your site's existence. beta.search.msn.com/docs/submit.aspx" MSN will seldom visit a website unless invited by submission. search.yahoo.com/info/submit.html Yahoo frequents sites more than MSN but less than Google but will dramatically increase visits after submission.

    (1) Promoting your blog will be more effective if you regularly post high quality, original content posts to your blog and build a faithful readership.

    (2) Promoting your blog will be more effective if you participate in blog carnivals blogcarnival.com/bc/

    (3) Promoting your blog will be more effective if you tag your posts with categories that are relevant to each specific post.

    (4) Promoting your blog will be more effective if you invest time and energy into leaving meaningful comments on other blogs, in forums and on websites related to your blogging topics.

    (5) Promoting your blog may be more effective if you join social networks.

    Best wishes for happy blogging.

      I tried technorati and could never get it to work. It still shows my blog has not been claimed even though I've followed the steps several times.

    Try to comment on blogs within your niche. This way, you'll have targeted readers reading your comments in other blogs and may even be interested enough by what you say to pay you a visit.

    Check whether your blog has been indexed by major search engines . If not then first submit your blog to the search engines manually . Here you can get a list of add URLs of most of the top search engines including google , yahoo , msn etc : www.kashifblog.com/2008/04/list-of-search-engines-to-submit-your.html . Once your blog has been submitted and indexed in most of the search engines you will notice some traffic coming to your site from search engines. It will be only few visitors but as your blog grows your number of visitors from search engines will also grow .

    Keep participating in community sites like BC coz this really help is spreading the word if your have something very interesting to share !

    nothing beats promotion and targeted audience. what exactly do you target? its just like selling. is it for teens, for young adults, for professionals, for techie, etc. then, put your blog in a free ads site. in my case it was effective because i put my link together with my ads especially if people want more details.

    Hmmm... TimeThief- you mentioned Technorati. I've been on there for awhile now, and only have an authority of like 36 or something. How exactly do you use it to get traffic? It seems that everything is based on "authority" and that can only be gained via solid links!

    Thoughts?
    1. timethief
      I have rarely ever received a referral from Technorati and other bloggers tell me their experience is the same.

    2. Financialnut
      @TimeThief: So- what's the point?

      I mean- if you are a SOLID blog that reaches that top 100, then maybe I can see the point. I've never gotten a click our of technorati. Just one more way to get ONE inbound link to your site?

      Maybe just a good resource for finding other blogs?

      From a marketing perspective, I don't see the point.

      *and maybe that's not the point anyway.
    3. timethief
      @financialnut
      Technorati has been useless when it comes to gaining any traffic to my blogs. However, I like to cover all the bases. They do have an enormous database and maybe one day they will renovate it and it will become more useful.
    4. Financialnut
      @TimeThief: Amen. You never know. And, hey, it's just another solid inbound link, I suppose.
    5. timethief

    Twenty five steps to increase blog traffic
    There are 25 basic steps to take to increase traffic to your blog. Here are the steps:
    1. Structure a reader and search engine blog;
    2. In blogging content is king create unique, high quality content;
    3. Use keywords effectively and apply basic SEO to your headlines, blog and posts;
    4. Make your blog posts look professional;
    5. Create at least 4-6 pillar posts;
    6. Select and link to appropriate anchor text;
    7. Leave meaningful comments on related blogs;
    8. Encourage comments on your own blog;
    9. Develop relationships with other bloggers so you can build a blog readers’ community around your own blog;
    10. Trackback and link to other blogs you refer to in your blog posts;
    11. Link to authoritative sources in your posts;
    12. Deep link to your earlier related posts in your new posts;
    13. Categorize and tag your posts with care;
    14. Link to related authoritative blogs in your blogroll;
    15. Provide RSS feeds for subscribers;
    16. Having a well designed theme is important, evaluate your theme for effectiveness, and if required, create a new header, make improvements or replace your theme;
    17. Avoid cluttering your blog with widgets that lack reader value;
    18. Buy your own domain;
    19. Go to google.com “Webmaster Tools” and set up your account there. Create a sitemap for your site and submit it to Google, Yahoo and MSN so search engines can find and index all your pages. If you have a free hosted wordpress.com map then sitemaps are automatically created for you. If you have a self hosted wordpress blog then there is a sitemap plugin that can auto-generate your sitemap whenever you update your site (and it auto-notifies Google for you);
    20. Get organized, use an online to do list by developing a blogging workflow;
    21. Promote your blog through directories and social media sites;
    22. Develop a social media time management strategy;
    23. Submit your latest pillar article to a blog carnival
    24. Submit your latest pillar article to Ezine Articles, etc.
    25. Become a guest blogger on sites with higher page rank than your own site.

    How to article links for the 25 steps can be found here -->
