Find something that you can specialize in without a ton of additional research. If you are constantly looking for more information because you are not already some type of an authority of the subject matter of your blog, you'll not succeed.
There's my two cents.

While I agree that good content will usually get you a good amount a traffic, it's not the only thing you have to do in order to succeed. If you think about it. Your time spent on your blog boils down to two things. Marketing and content. What you have to figure out is what percentage you want to put into each one. For me, it's 80% content 30% marketing. (I always give 110%) Figure out what percentage works for you and go with that.

To focus on one blog(all by yourself) and make it succeed, in my opinion it's tough I am running a blog with the help of my sister since she know to write content and it's her stuff, also we have a real doctor backed us up for technical question.While my role is marketing and promoting through SEO, Social Bookmarking and List Building.The Pareto rules still apply even you have partners to run your blog.Hope this input is useful.

Content is King but promotion is Queen. Bloggers are communicators. If no one knows your blog exists then no matter how good the contents are - why blog?
Here are some things that I think are characteristic of a "good" blog.
(1) Unique content that's well written by a blogger, who actually knows what they are writing about, is passionate about the subject matter, and is able to present it effectively.
(2) A clean and uncluttered blog design that frames the content rather than hiding it, or being so colorful, loud and cluttered that it distracts one from reading the content.
(a) A blog design that's highly accessible and easily and intuitively navigated by readers(Pages, Recent Posts, Popular Posts, Archives);
(b) A blog design that places the content front and center and is not destroyed by tasteless advertising, and/or advertising overkill, and/or widget overkill;
(c) A blog structure and post structure that's both reader and search engine friendly (basic SEO), including appropriate tagging.
(3) A blog where you find that the blogger posts regularly, although not necessarily every day, and who is savvy enough not to choose to publish quantity over quality.
(4) A blog that demonstrates that the blogger answers comments promptly and politely and creates a safe environment for intelligent discussion. -
i tend to give my posts titles and tags that someone might think meant one thing when it really means something totally different. like, i have this post about odd advertising (cialis tissue box- really?) and i tagged it cialis and advertising. that post earned my a good third of the traffic i got that week. post funny things, but don't put alot of effort into being funny. and i do this alot, but don't overuse text speak in your blog. i mainly stick with real words, but i can't seem to let go of btw, wtf, or lol... a flaw, that i admit, has cost me some traffic. And write about things that happen to you, if your blog is a personal one. people love reading about other people's lives. extra points if your life is sad and pitiful. this is how i increased my traffic from about half a view a day to about thirty a week. still not good, but i'm getting there! i hope...
