How to make your visitors comeback after the first visit from your blog?

What makes me keeping coming back to a blog is that the subject appeals to me, they write well, and they have something interesting to share. Without that the contests, widgets, etc wouldn't do it. Isn't it subjective and depends on what people like? I think I have a fairly good blog, but if visitors are not interested in art and what makes artists tick, one visit is probably all I will get.

Well said! Content content and content but if its not their 'cup of tea', then no they probably won't come back but you've got to speculate to accumalate and teh same goes for building a loyal following.
Prob best to be true to yourself and pick a few visitors up along the way.

Hypnotic suggestion that they subscribe to your blog
- in your post -
Like this:

And then I end with a teaser like ThriftShopRomantic said.
Edit* Of course the content has to be good or it won't work!

It's a tough thing to do and I'm by no means an expert. For my niche (horse racing), I try to offer things that I don't see on other similar blogs.
I started out jumping all over the place within the sport, handicapping random tracks and that sort of thing, but than it dawned on me that I wouldn't get consistent readership unless I played the same tracks on a set schedule.
What did I do about it? I scrapped that (I now only handicap the biggest race cards of the weekend) and started focusing on providing more information on the horses involved in the Kentucky Derby. I started gathering photos, video, and pertinent information and figured I'd do regular write ups about them.
That's seemed to work so far. Time has been an issue for me as I'm working longer hours these days, but I think folks know now that when they come and visit they will get any applicable photos/race replays to help them understand what is being discussed.
What's really cool is that it seems to satisfy hard core horse racing fans and newcomers alike.
Long story short - figure out your target audience and what it is they want to see. look at some similar blogs and ask yourself "what would I change or do diffrently if this were mine?" -

pay them a visit and leave a comment.. you just have to make sure that you read and understand the post before leaving a comment so you wont be considered a spam.
they will comeback to thank you and appreciate you -
Offer them cookies and juice.
Seriously though I sometimes leave little teasers like my pending story about how I embarassed myself with Martin Sheen ( which isn't actually that great a story but people still want to know lol)
Also I had a monthly meme/blog contest thing which used to be a great incentive but I haven't done that for awhile. -

Hi Alvin,
Just saw your blog. Its funny because one of the things I was looking for mine was a way of getting more people in. My target is very specific - poker players - but it is so difficult to make them go there...
Appreciated if you could have a look to my blog

and give me your feedback.
Best regards,

I have a pop up that tells them I know who they are and where they are and threaten to boil their pet rabbit in a pot.

I think that as long as what you write is good then you should be fine. For me it doesn't really matter to me who reads or doesn't read because I do it for myself but i guess if i wanted to draw more readers to my blog i would add in something with humor. Like a comic strip or a "joke of the day" . . hope no one said that yet.

Comment back. Probably will not be returned (as they don't have anything else to say, etc.) but there are some serious bloggers out there who return to comment on your newest blog, if they're feeling it. Content is also important.
For me, I come back for content, will become a Follower if I am interested to know more, along with other reasons. I read their latest post (all of it, not merely skimmed through) and give meaningful comments. They'll return it to you. "Nice blog!" won't get you anywhere. -
I just started blogging about a month ago. I took a couple of weeks off while I was transferring my blog from Blogger to Wordpress. So far I enjoy Wordpress, but it is so frustrating to only get around 30 visitors to the site on average per day. I blog about Philadelphia sports so during the games I watch and update the blog while also trying to market. It slowly works and I average one comment a night. Does anyone have any suggestions for improving my blog or for helping to market it? I am trying to have fun while making some money, but to make money I know I have to build up a strong site. The URL is www.broadstreetheroes.com/. All help is appreciated. Thank you.
I also have added a feed through feedburner, but for some reason I get errors in adding a sitemap for my blog on Google. Any reason why? -
I have been personable to resonate with my visitors, and I know they will come. Right now I'm having problems with my RSS Feed. I keep getting an error when I submit it to Google Sitemaps, but it seems to work when I click the link on my page. Here is the RSS Link: www.broadstreetheroes.com/?feed=rss2. Let me know if there is something that I need to correct please.

I'm slowly building readers by posting often and offering interesting articles, provided you have an interest in wine (which you should cause it's healthy and interesting and goes well with food and ok,ok, it can also give you a nice "buzz")
