Seems to me there are many cults out there making a great deal of money from gullible people. Any ideas for starting a cult?

You could start with a blog about your cult and turn your readers into devoted followers???

This is one of the earliest videos i can remember on the WEB. caused quite a sensation as an underground art-house satire. its great to see its still out there.

Excellent video should be available in all schools and colleges. Really clever and simple breakdown of what cults are about.

Just sell how to make a million with real estate with no money down at 3am. Seems to have been working for the last 20 years. I still see the commercials on.

Really though, blogging is the best way of making money. You won't have a bunch of people hating you in this business.

That video isn't satire, it's a pretty accurate overview of what cults do to break down individuality and induce normal people to give up their free will. The references to the techniques and beliefs of Scientology, the Moonies, the Krishnas and others are quite obvious. Ever wonder why cultist were often found in airports trying to recruit? They know that people are their most vulnerable when they're between two points, not anchored in their lives. Great video and reminder of how dangerous cults really are.

      Simple: Scientology is a cult.

Tell them to eat French Pastry everyday and they won't gain any weight.

Oooooh--that looks so good. Almost as decadent as the dessert I had last night at a fabulous restaurant. We celebrated our first anniversary at L'Espalier in Boston. YUM!

Three easy steps to starting a cult:
    1. Create Fear in something (Fox News is great at this)
    2. Offer basic solutions that appeal to large uneducated masses (religion is great for this)
    3. Speak only in buzz-words and sloguns, do not speak substantively (once again, Fox News)

Fox News: We report, you decide.

(In other words, we'll tell you what you need to know and then you'll undoubtedly agree with us.)

Browbeat. Spew hatred. Bludgeon everyone into your way of looking at the universe. Strip them of the ability to think for themselves. Upload your program into their blank minds... well, you get the picture.

Above all, get them to give you everything... their money, their possessions, their bodies and their souls. You ARE God, after all. Never forget that.

I will watch the video tomorrow, haven't had a chance yet but thanks for the comments. I wasn't serious by the way!

Just do what the US military does. Anything they do, you do. Simple.

Threaten to take their souls into a place of eternal suffering, where people can only breathe fire and ash whilst dragging rocks attached to their toes with a string and carrying lumps of lit coal, if they don't follow the rules you have set for them to live by (including regular worship).

Oh, and let them know how much you love them otherwise.

Steps to building a cult. lol

    1. Promise Free corn (Look it up)
    2. Find a smooth talking dreamer to carry the banner of "Hope"
    3. Stir in rumors, propaganda, lies and half-truths
    4. Throw and big party (repeat steps 2 & 3)
    5. Enjoy.

The video was great...it may have been funnier if it wasn't so true!

As for most of my friends here from across the Atlantic, we saw one of your great cult productions here in Europe last week! There were people screaming, out of control, in total hysteria, and in a state of something close to psychosis. It was called "The Democratic Party Convention" or something like that. It was the cult of the personality, Obama Bin Biden, as he may eventually become to be known.

I like the cult of the "wicked war-lock of the west" much less. But you people over there sure as hell do love these personality cult things. How the hell does one man in 300 million make such a difference? How could they? Unless he's a mass cult leader of course...

I'm sure if you're really interested in starting a cult, you could click on the ad (Scientology) at the bottom of screen. It certainly seems to be on every page here lately. Kind of scary I'm seeing it everywhere.

"Any ideas for starting a cult?"

I already have one and unlike Scientology, it's free to join.

It also issues invisible buttsecks to every 100th member.

    Hur, hur. I said "member".

This is actually the whole point of my blog--to create a devoted, cult-like following. Though I don't seem to have found many of my own Mansongirls as yet....

O no! Dr. Jay has me in trouble now!

So what's the difference between a cult and an orthodox religion except centuries of acceptance and entire nations subscribing to it as integral to their culture and/or heritage? The second one being a religion and a cult being newer and smaller and wielding less political clout. (Certainly, the history of early Christianity--just one case among many--fits the video's cult-format step by step.
So, how many of us are born into cults, new or old?
Bearing in mind, of course, that any hard-core anti-cult can't help fitting most if not all of the directives.

Rule # 1: Call it "religion" for tax deduction.
