1. Need very good content. Don't just copy and paste because seach engines will know that.
2. Nice design will help visitors to navigate your blog and that will please them and maybe return to your blog again.
3. Let people know about your blog. List in directories and participate in discussion and share your thoughts.
4. Join sites like BlogCatalog to help promote your blog and to get more tips.
5. Check my blog and maybe you can pick a thing or two more tips. Honestly, I can say our blog has a very good design and original articles - blog.onesuite.com -

Link exchange works best if the two blogs aer at least relevant to each other. It also up your page rank that way.

- The last 4 Google PageRank updates have made it clear that reciprocal link exchanges are not the way to go, unless the blogs in question are directly related blogs in the same niche. Please read this post in the BC New Users Group so your understand that mile long blogrolls comprised of links to unrelated sites are passe'. Non-reciprocal (one way) backlinks are what every blog needs.

A lot of frickin time.
You won't become a traffic magnet overnight. You need to work work work for a good reputation and good returning traffic and readership. To get that process started can take you months of work already. -

I have to agree with the effort, effort and more effort method. I just looked at my Google Analytics page before coming here and it is painfully clear how my input into the blog(s)reflects the traffic I get.

there are a lot of tips that are out there that for the most part don't work, like putting it into a blog directory. I know this is one but it has a discussion board unlike many, many others so its a good way to interact with people while still getting your blog out there. Other directories just have u enter your blog and drop it off somewhere in cyberspace. that does no good. Best way i have found is if you are on here, join in on discussions. Use twitter but don't just update with blog info, really get relationships forming with people you follow and those following you. Comment on other peoples blogs and not just the b.s 'great blog' comment. Don't be afraid to follow before you lead, don't just want followers, learn to follow as well. What makes your blog so much better than other peoples, you know? O and facebook networkblogs is pretty good for getting you followers but not too many that will visit and comment regularly -

Blogs are really good at getting long tailed keywords. Take a main keyword you are trying to get ranked for and come up with every possible long keyword phrase. Just recently I was looking for a game my daughter could play. She is 6 years old. So I typed in "free online games for 6 year olds", I found a cool game for her to play and noticed that it would be pretty easy to get keyword phrase if my blog was pimped out for that industry... Don't go after "make money online" go after make money in the dog grooming business or something related to your niche... -
Timethief is right, reciprocal link penalizes both blogs if its unrelated. Also try to build your keywords for yor niche, that will help you on search engine results.

One thing people often forget, name the photos in your blog.. Do not leave them as 123img.jpg -

It takes time untill google will identify all your posts and make them visible in the front page. However you need some extra hits in order to achieve that. Therefore use BC for link exchange. Good writting is always esential
