Mauro,
It is true. The challenge we have is that certain people abuse the feature and the way we solved it has caused a problem for members, like yourself who do not spam. The choices we have are
1. Leave the limit at 2,000 friends as we currenlty have
2. After a member has been on BlogCatalog for 6 months, increase the limit by another 2,000 friends.
3. Have a daily friend limit of a specific number of new friends, eg. 25.

Is there a way to make the friend feature a request to the person where the person they want to "friend" has the option to approve/disapprove the request? That would take care of it. That's how it is done @ cre8buzz anyway.

again .. my thoughts on this..
1. Leave the limit at 2,000 friends as we currenlty have
>> YUCK
2. After a member has been on BlogCatalog for 6 months, increase the limit by another 2,000 friends.
>> UGGH - all this will do is have people go away for 6 months and come back
3. Have a daily friend limit of a specific number of new friends, eg. 25.
>>>> GAG >>> this is one of the reasons I stopped going to MyBlogLog - because of their daily limit to join communities
Another possible option is to consider something similar to STumbleUpon .. instead of FRIENDS .. you are only FANS - until the other mutually accepts you as friend. You can have Fan Requests fall off the table after 6 months .. and maybe a contest for the username with the MOST friends! I would be interested in seeing a BC member with 80 thousand friends (that mutually wanted to be friends)-
The 'Stumbleupon' option sounds good, with a few adjustments.
I'm not sure of the ratio, but a good percentage of my BC friends added me, and I responded!
I guess that there are no really easy answers, as you have people like Guy Kawasaki and Robert Scoble on Facebook wrestling with a limit of 5,000.
As far as knowing people 'in person', I think that it is really irrelevant in a sense, simply because of the nature of the Internet.
I know quite a number 'personally' though, after corresponding here, on Skype and Twitter!
