I need help understanding search engines.

I'm still at a loss with the search engines I've applied to a ton of them but really haven't seen much in the way of hits from them.I know it takes a little time so I am being patient.I still would like some quality info from anyone who has been there done that.Thanks a lot guys It really means a lot and I appreciate your time.

Hmm, Yep, SEO is tricky. The biggest thing is content. The second biggest thing is sites that link to yours. If you are talking about a blog, some of the search engines rank them low or don't show them at all. Google tends to favor blogger for some reason (hehe).
Search engines also rank sites by keyword density which is hard to get in a blog. It's hard to use the same word over and over in a blog.

When you post, use wods in the post that people would use in a search on your topic. ie; "How to become a Policeman" sentences like A CAREER in POLICE work is no picnic but as a JOB it can be very REWARDING.

You get the idea. Do the same with titles. It takes time.

your blog is already there in search engines.You need higher ranking.

Backlinking is good, but having lots of bad links in your blog will get you a ban from google. So it is good not to trade backlinks with others. Ask them to link to you and offer them another service like a stumble/ fave in technorati.

If you write good contents, you dont even know that a blog has linked with you.
Dont delete your old posts, google will punnish your blog.

Dont copy a bulk amount of your article in another site, like a forum. It will become a duplication penalty.
