I love to write and to blog and I want to improve my blog...but I don't have the time to learn how to do all this HTML stuff...If it is pretty straight forward I can do it...but if it is intricate or changing the template HTML...well, I am sort of scared.

First, I would like people to look at my blog. Please give your suggestions. I know of a few changes that need to be made already, like the "read more" stuff...but any other suggestions would be appreciated. Or should I just farm this out to someone that has the knowledge to create a blog that will work for me.

Another thing...should I switch from Blogger to Wordpress?

I already have a following, but I believe I would have more if my blog was more friendly.

I'm not familiar with Wordpress, but I do have Blogger and it's great for people who don't know anything about HTML. The downside to that is, I wrote something about Obama and allegedly one of his supporters didn't like it, and flagged my blog as a spam blog. Blogger has not returned any of my e-mails or lifted a word verification code off my account. (But I do play fair, and also blast McCain or praise both candidates.)

But Blogger is probably the best way to go. It's simple and I found it very easy to use.

As far as getting people on there, it's not easy. But to be honest, Blogcatalog is the best way to get people on your blog.

Wordpress is the best option. Take control of your content

If you like to write and don't want to fuss around with behind the scenes stuff like html then don't switch to wordpress.

I opened a blog in both blogger and wordpress and quickly realized that blogger was perfect for me and much easier to manipulate than wordpress. With blogger I can add widgets, change the colours, font, etc. With wordpress I couldn't ... and what I could change was more complicated than with blogger.

You may want to open a blog in wordpress and see how you like it.

Your blog looks good, that's not my favourite template and I prefer the sidebar on the right. Because we read left to right I think it's best to have the content on the left.

I started with wordpress and it was not an easy ride. Took me at least 3 months to be confident to take control of my content. I did not discover blogger till my 4th month.

Wordpress is good but you need to commit time to learn html and .php.

Yes, I got one of each when I started and within a few hours I had my blogger blog up and running. I soon gave up on the wordpress eventho people kept telling me wordpress was better.

I think it's a personal choice, but for me it's blogger all the way. Plus I really don't like the look of wordpress templates, I know that puts me in the minority...but that's what's great about all the choices out there. But being able to adjust the colours and make my own banner fit in with the colours was so much easier with blogger ... I find you can't really manipulate wordpress as easily.

If I could turn the clock back, I would probably spend as much time learning blogger as I did with wordpress. Cus I can;t stand not knowing what I am dealing with on the internet.

I have blogspot which I don;t promote as it is only for reference. I find it is much easier, write, post and done.

With wordpress, you just gotta be sure you know at least the post area. Forget about the widgets and ads, if you are confident with manipulating your post area which is the content area, it is not worthwhile using wordpress at any price.

wordpress then put a forum on it and a community builder software so other people waste their time community building and content creating for you!
    1. shepherdess
What community builder software do your recommend?

Have just visited your blog and thought it was good, I immediately got involved in reading it and it takes a bit to draw me in. I've been happy enough with Blogger and not tried Wordpress so can't give much of an opinion really. Will be revisiting your blog because it was interesting and informative.

The obvious answer is yes. Once you go WordPress, you'll never go back. You have a wonderful collection of articles and what you need is just a simple packaging worthy of attention.

If you need any help in anyway, please do not hesitate to contact me

Which blog? you have a few

and what do you want to achieve with it?

I used to teach IT students how to use Blogger. It has disadvantages. But if you are comfortable , great, stick with it
    1. acousticguitarist
you need to be clear on Wordpress hosted or Wordpress Network at wordpress.com

there are differences, advantages and disadv

I think timethief (blogger person) has some good resources on all that

The date on this is 10/06/08 Shepherdess now has 3 blogspot blogs and is doing just fine.
    1. acousticguitarist
Wow that's 25 years ahead of australia
    2. shepherdess
Thanks timethief...for your input... I keep plugging away...but always want to do better. I know that maybe one day..I may change over to Wordpress...I just don't have the time to teach myself a new method of doing things or become knowledgeable about HTML or how to build a blog from scratch...this will have to sourced out, when I have the money to place it in competent hands. Right now, I am writing and building my audience...if it meets the need of those who are coming and they aren't clicking away...then I am good.
At this point I would be happy if someone could just show me how to add in the "read more" HTML in to my template or in to each post...so people don't have to move through entire posts....Any takers?!!!!!!!

      shephie

Why don't you take another approach.

E.g. How about just saying 'I need to know how to do such and such' etc, be really clear, this will eliminate lots of problems. I teach computers for a living, predominantly Web technology of sorts. You can never learn everything about software, a language or whatever. Work out what it is you really need to know, describe it clearly and then maybe someone will pick it up and point you to a decent resource. What you are asking is very obscure. It's like trying to learn every musical part in an orchestra. Why not just say, hey HOW DO I....?

    Hi there,

I can share my experience with both. I am currently using Blogger for one of my blogs www.spanishto-go.com and I am also starting a new blog using Worpress, www.positivetalking.com. Here's my opinion on both:

    Blogpress
    - Easy to use
    - Easy to add Adsense
    - Easy to add widgets
    - Limited layout control
    - Easy Integration with Google Docs to publish your posts
    - Lower quality templates than Wordpress

    Wordpress
    - High quality FREE template highly customizable
    - Incredible blog layout control
    - Easier to host with your hosting company. Most hosting companies now have One Click Wordpress install.
    - More professional looking layouts than blogger

Although on both platforms you need to have some basic HTML and CSS knowledge if you want to tweak the layouts design. If your goal is to grow your blog to be more professional looking, I would go with Wordpress hands down, otherwise I would stick with Blogger. For HTML and CSS basics there are several FREE sources online, but a good one is www.w3schools.com
It's better to have a little knowledge than driving solo out there.

I hope I made a little sense to you.
    Good luck to you!

I'm in the process of learning about niche blogging myself. I have a game blog on blogger and so I wanted to stick with them for my niche marketing because I already know my way around blogger and wordpress intimidates me. However, from everything I've been reading, it seems for niche marketing wordpress is the way to go for two very big reasons. 1) you can host a wordpress blog with your own domain name and 2) when it comes to ranking well in the search engines, they apparently love wordpress.

I looked at your mindset blog and it looks really nice. How have you been doing for traffic and amazon sales?

Did you notice what the last date shepherdess posted to this thread was? It was on 12/14/08 so I'm thinking that if you want to contact her directly that leaving a PM in her shoutbox or locating contact information on her blog will be more effective than posting to this thread.

There are other reasons for blogging on your own domain, rather than on a subdomain like blogspot or wordpress.com. You will find them in the post I'm linking to. How and why to get your own domain

    Your blogs are nicely done.

You should switch to self hosted WordPress blog. WordPress is so much better and control than blogspot. Since I switched to WordPress, I never turn back.
