People have helped me here at BC,and I want to return the favor. For the last month or so, I've had very good luck with reddit.com. My traffic has increased significantly; Since I started my blog on March 5, I've gotten about 78,000 hits, and I want to share my fortune.

With reddit.com, it's important to have "karma" when posting, so if you post something good with low karma it probably won't get any hits. Reddit.com claims that the secret to gaining karma is a secret, but it's pretty easy to figure out that if you only submit your own posts, you'll get nowhere fast. My karma is high enough to where I can now submit my own posts, and I usually get over 1000 hits per submission.

When folks on reddit see a new post from someone with low karma, they usually delete it right away - they can be ruthless. It's like initiation into a club. In the last few days a couple of BCers asked me to submit their posts to reddit (on their behalf -they get the hits). Both shouted back to me that they were surprized how many hits they got.

My karma will increase if I submit something successful for you, but that's not why I'm offering. If you want to use reddit on your own, just find material you like and submit it for someone else. You will slowly gain enough karma to submit your own stuff.

I really can't submit more than a few posts a day to reddit. If this list gets long and you don't want to wait for me to get to your post, maybe you can trade submissions with someone else on the thread.

One final thing funny pics, vids, and writing seem to get the best traffic. Be sure you title is provocative.

I can't guarantee success, but I've been realize surprized by how well my submissions are doing.

  Well, I got quite a few hits from the link you submitted. Unfortunately, it was only 'dugg' (what is the reddit term for clicking and giving a point?!) twice, but the visitors are still coming.

I can second the effectiveness of reddit. It's not dramatic like Digg can be if you win the big front page prize, but even small things can easily lead to 100 hits.

I actually killed all my accounts though, because I have decided that the world doesn't need to know about every single post I like, and it find it just plain energy consuming. I might rethink that, but I wanted to try life without these sites for some time.

You're right about the Karma, whether here or StumbleUpon or whereever. Besides "Karma" as reddit describes it, you get the phenomenon of people liking and following your submissions.

Edit: If you want to submit something to reddit, I've got political stuff on markstoneman.wordpress.com. I think, though, that we might be on different ends of the political spectrum. No matter. Reddit or not as you please.

  I know this is a fluke but my post last night I was 4,000. Today I'm over 30,000 robertstevenson.wordpress.com/2008/04/09/last-night-i-was-4000-today-im-ove... talks about one submission that ended up bringing me about 34,000 hits. I've had others about 5,000. I keep feeling like I hit the lottery. I usually only get about 30 to 50 from Digg. But they're all fickly - different things work better for different people.

  Already 40 hits from over there. Looks like you submitted the "What Teachers Make" post, right? That's what's getting hit as an individual post most, anyway.
  
  Edit: Only one person, maybe from reddit, maybe not, has clicked on any other links leading away from my blog. Seems as if they're checking out the story and going back to reddit. No comments here either. Comments there instead? Or folks just reading? Fair enough either way.

  66 hits from Reddit today. 191 hits to that post total. I'd say Reddit was significant, even if it tapered off fairly quickly. And we're talking about a post that didn't go anywhere on their own pages, right?

  I'm glad you got some hits. I was watching it, and I don't think it made it to the front of the hot page. That seems to happen after folks start recognizing your work. When the regulars leave comments. Others want to see what all the commotion is about.

I'm wondering why traffic count matters if you don't have a for-profit blog? Is it about wanting more people to read your posts? It's an honest question because I'm not sure why people want hundreds or thousands of readers. Or maybe I just don't get blogging, lol. I dunno.

As for bloggers who use digg and other things, when I go to a blog and enjoy a post, I never click any of those things. I don't like having to do work after reading a post. Which is why I don't have those things on my blog, no ratings system, no digg, no clicking or linking needed. Just read, enjoy & leave.

Here's my take on traffic. When big numbers roll in, there may be only about 20% that spend "quality" time and maybe even subscribe to your blog. For me 20% is better than nothing.

  For those who've joined this thread late, I've had to stop accepting new request. There's a limit to how many posts I can submit without it hurting my karma. Since my relatively high karma was the reason I was able to help folks out, I don't want to jeapardize it. Listen up folks,

When a post goes up on reddit, people vote it up or down. It might work better if you joined and voted for the others on this list. Some are getting more hits than others. Some have 4 points, but some don't have any. You can still get hits with 0 points, but probably only about 20 of so.

Take a look around reddit to see what posts are getting the most points; I've done well with funny stuff.

I submitted seven posts since startig this thread yesterday, plus one of my own this morning (to keep my karma high). My post: robertstevenson.wordpress.com/2008/05/24/silly-news-18-nothing-says-breakin... got 450 hits in the last couple hours.

As I've said before, when I submit too many, my karma goes down, so I have to take this slowly.

I'm a reddit member. I note that the social network icons at the end of your post are not active so I'll submit you post myself from the net. I'm sitting here watching "submitting" forever. If this is the way it always is at Reddit then they need more servers or juice or whatever.

  To be honest I go by my gut feeling. I believe reddit folks have a slightly warped sense of humor. Sort of a SNL/monty pythonish humor. Because I like that humor, what I find funny seems to work. BTW: my post has now receieved over 700 hits. I usually average about 1,000 hits per my personal posts. I'm really not sure why my stuff is working right now. I really haven't checked my theory, but I feel there are popular redditers and if they comment on your posts other will want to see what all the fuss is about. I know this is vague, but that's all I've got right now.

  I know how you feel. I'd rather get lots of folks coming to my blog for my writing posts, not just the funny headlines. But a lot of the folks who come for the silly signs and funny headlines eventually make it to my writing posts. A good percentage of them come back. That's why I try to bring in large crowds, for the 15 to 20% of new (return) visitors.

Reddit can really help with your traffic. Don' worry if you don't get great traffic right away. It took me about a month to start seeing big number.

  That happened to me for about a month. Are you sure you are looking in the same category that you submitted in. Check your profile. You should see the submission there. Click on the category (writing) (funny) etc. Then click on new. Hopefully that will work.

of the comment Robert made in his initial

So- if a person can have 'negative karma'
on Reddit, it would seem like it would be
better to have a post submitted by a person
with even NO karma (a new account), rather
than really bad karma. Or is whatever karma
you start out with as a new member (none?)
