I shaved my head last year and I loved it...now I'm thinking that I would love to have a tattoo on my scalp so that when I have a shaved head I have a funky pattern rather than just pale skin! I don't have any tattoos because I always figured I'd get bored of them and then regret them...but I think having one on my scalp would be good because chances are if I've decided I don't want to have tattoos anymore...I probably don't want a shaved head either!

Anyone have tattoos and can tell me how horrific the pain would be?

You guys this it would be a good idea?

wow...you have no tattoos and the first one you want to get is your SCALP? Tattoos hurt a LOT more on places where bone is close to the surface (ie: ankle, wrist, foot, ect)....so I really can't imagine how painful the scalp would be.

Maybe you should try taking baby steps before going all out, lol.

I'm thinking ouch - and lots of blood (there is a high concentration of thin veins on your scalp).

And it will rattle your teeth.

It's gonna hurt -- so much. You will stand out in a crowd... But not always in a good way to some. It could also make any job interviews or future meetings with in-laws a bit awkward. I'd start with a small "tester" one first. Maybe on your arm… Or somewhere not quite so near to your head. See how you feel about it for a couple of months and then make your decision. Also, as some women age, their hair gets thinner, so it may start to show whether you want it to or not.

Yeah...this is what my friend says...pain pain pain but worth it! I don't suppose anyone offers a general anaesthetic before they stab you hundreds of times with a needle?
    1. Anok
The y could offer that, but I'm not really sure if whatever they apply will affect the quality of the tattoo.

(That's why you don't drink alcohol before getting a tattoo - when you bleed extra, the ink bleeds out and ruins your tattoo).

Hey, if you want it, and you have the balls to get it on your head - I say go for it.

I'll probably wait a few years...spend that time learning everything there is to know and psyching myself up for it...and possibly destroying the nerve-endings in my scalp!

    That is not recommended

You could get canvernous sinus thrombosis leading to blindness

    Meningitis is a risk

Skin ulceration is also a problem

    Hi

I have a couple small tatts, but I would be hesitant to ever get one of my scalp ( if I was bald!)

The severity of discomfort of getting a tatt depends where you have it done, as others have said on here . I would think it would hurt heaps on your scalp !!!

I would do as someone suggested already, and perhaps get a small one done elsewhere to see if it is for you? or perhaps get one of those Henna tattoos done first, at least they will eventually wear off if you don't like it ;-)

Correct me if I am wrong anyone, but I don't think the henna ones would pose any serious health issues???? I'm not sure tho...

Unfortunately henna doesn't seem to stain my skin...I don't know why!

That sounds extremely painful to me.

I don't have any tattoos. It's a matter of honor. I got the crap beaten out of me in jail because some mean girls wanted to give me a tattoo and I wouldn't let them.

AFter going through that to not get a tattoo--I could never bring myself to get one.

Oh ok SiuilARuin. It's good that you are doing your research about it first before going 'ahead' with it. Please becareful

yeah...I'm definitely not the type to impulsively do something permanent...I might impulsively shave my head, but that's only because I know it'll grow back (and quickly...fastest hair in the West)

Sounds painful, extremely painful. (Cringes) but on the other hand, when you get tired of it, you can just grow your hair out and cover it.

    Just don't tattoo your face.

Here's a blog/site that goes into the skull tattooing experience:

    www.bmeink.com/A40624/tatskull.html

I laid on my side for the tattooing, facing away from Scott. The first half of the process felt almost like nothing - certainly less painful than receiving the small black lizard that adorns the back of my head & neck, & that's due to artist ability. For the bulk of it, Scott used a 9-needle flat, & though the pain was intense through the second half, it immediately stopped hurting when he stopped. The sensation was similar to the vibrations caused by hair clippers, but with some pain.

Even presuming that a scalp tattoo wouldn't swell much since it's so far above the heart, I still overestimated how much swelling there would be. The thing barely tingled on the way home, hardly leaked any lymph at all, & required almost no care through the healing. I kept my hair out of it & it was plenty happy to heal on its own.

Two points of interest: a) hair-washing; 2) scab flaking.

You're so lovely Anok! I had actually just been on that site!

      Great minds....

of course, it is worth noting that everyone's experience will be different; often radically so.

I would wait until you are really sure it is something you want to do.

Some downsides include MRI complications - swelling & burning can sometimes occur in the tattooed area. Allergic reactions and skin disorders that can continue for years after getting the tattoo...probably wouldn't be fun having a very itchy rash on your head for years.

Of course, most complications are rare, but...it might be better to get a small tattoo somewhere else first to see how your body reacts. Your head is moderately important, and might not be the best place to get a first tattoo.

this seems to be the general consensus...thank ye.

I can see skin cancer on that scalp.

      Well aren't you a killjoy

      I saw a funny tattoo!
    3. Epicharis
that is fantastic! Reminds me of one Billy Connolly talked about in one of his shows: a woman with a the Tasmanian Devil with a lawn-mower just above her pubis and she shaves a little strip away....I think it's a fab idea!

Nah don't get any tattoos, people think they are a sign of individuality they are the opposite,
    1. Epicharis
I'm not really considering it because I want to look cool to other people...I really am one of the "doing it for me" types...

The most serious diseases from tattoos.
Please thinking before it several times.
    1. Anok
No, you don't get the most serious diseases from professionally done tattoos.

Maybe if you go to that guy in the basement of that place, with the cigarette buts on the floor, and the strange looking dog whose foaming at the mouth in the corner of the room and some dirty lookin' needles...

      But not from professionals.
    2. Epicharis
The MOST SERIOUS diseases? are we talking leprosy, AIDS, malaria? where are you getting tattoos done?!
  14. Nomadic
I'd go for the face...or maybe your neck, at the front.
