I feel not proud of my being Italian. I wonder what kind of opinions come out from newspapers and International communities. My beautiful country is now living a very bad moment and politic is not of great help !

I've never been to Italy, but from what I've seen in the newspapers and media, Berlusconi seems to be a j@ck@$$. I can't quite wrap my brain around the fact that he keeps getting re-elected.

I grew up around Italians, and I love Italians. Italian food, Italian merriment, Italian art, poetry and film. I'm an apolitical animal, so I don't even know who Berlusconi is.

It's a real shame. Italy is one of my very favorite countries--so beautiful--so full of culture, art, history--
You should be pround, still, to be Italian. I am proud to be Egyptian even though I am not proud of where the country is right now. I feel we should each embrace our heritage--and every heritage has beauty and wisdom in it. -
I'm afraid Berlusconi has damaged Italy's reputation in terms of politics: but when it comes to opera, art, and cuisine, Italy will still remain a world leader.
I do wonder what the opposition in Italy is doing; they should be able to do something about him, given how many scandals he has.-
The problem here is that despite a lot of criticism around him, his family and his political decisions, most of italians voted him (not my case). I'm naif to think that maybe with the hope that something was going to change in better and this has changed in worse. I'm proud of my country with all the beauties and culture treasures but really at the moment i would like to run away from here

@Muzung
Well part of the problem is that Berlusconi controls so much of the media; my perception is that the Blogosphere in Italy is not as well developed as it is in the English speaking world, thus there isn't enough of an opposition voice out there.
But don't worry - Berlusconi is not fixing Italy's problems, and it will be noticed. -
I'm afraid we are almost at the end of the list of European countries. I'm not racist, not at all, but you know that in Rome, if you take a bus or underground it seems to be in Romania? For the massive number of people coming from this country? And then with all the problems we have here why i have to open the newspaper and read about all his personal love affairs? Who cares about this. My husband that is not Italian doesn't have a job and he is still waiting for the gouvernment to take the subsidy for the unemployed (5 months and he is still waiting ). Once I had a good way of living now I'M POOR, believe me! And the euro despite of being strong was a great damage for us!

@muzung
Berlusconi isn't dealing with Italy's main problem: Italy has traditionally been reliant on manufacturing, particularly textiles, and is getting its clock cleaned by China. Furthermore, when Italy still had the lira, governments would get out of trouble by devaluing the lira and thus making exports cheaper.
He also hasn't set up the country's infrastructure or education systems to deal with the internet age. Italy desperately needs to move into high tech and high value activities, but government is impeding, not helping this evolution.
So, you have my sympathy muzung...unfortunately, the Democratic Party doesn't seem ready to knock out Berlusconi yet. But surely, Berlusconi's popularity will fall. -
Well I believe that corrouption is at all level of Politic HERE, look what Prodi did in the European parliament, and when he had the opportunity to come back to try to rule, he just made a mess. Right, left, middle at the moment there is a very little faith, even though i agree with you that Berlusconi will fall. Schools, educations, technology, what about justice? Or laws that grant women that decide to have children. Look at me: 2 children, a job, I have to pay private school and after 3 months of having babies I had to come back at work. I didn't have the opportunity to pay a baby sitter, every time my children are getting the little deseases, what do you think I do: to get a day vacation or to be ill at home with them. They force you to be dishonest!
-
@muzung
The tax system in Italy has forced people to be dishonest for years. However the strange thing about Italy is that in spite of the government, much of life carries on anyway. I'm only sorry that you're caught up in this in such a bad way...Italy doesn't even have a strong Green Party add something new.

Friends and favours: Berlusconi & his 'butterflies'

Butterflies as in mind controlled Monarch sex slaves? The Czech must also be proud of their free-snaking ex prime-minister, Topolanek.

Berlusconi: A venal fear-mongering semi-fascist plutocrat who would do anything to enrich himself. But Green Curmudgeon is right: no one blames the Italians. They're too lovable.
