I've never really heard his music, I may have played transcriptions at some point.
  1. crpitt
    Carlos Santana.
    1. acousticguitarist
He makes me cry, the only guitarist that has ever had that effect on me. Seen him live a few times.
    2. oren
      yeap carlos santana
  2. DrowseyMonkey
    Stevie Ray Vaughn

Acoustic ... Liona Boyd. Actually not sure if 'acoustic' is her specialty.
  3. MadameX
    Eric Clapton

Not sure if I really thought about it I'd stay there, but that's what popped into my head when I read your question.
    1. acousticguitarist
yep that's what i want, first thoughts

gosh, i've seen 3 of them play in australia
    2. acousticguitarist
      acoustic and electric?
  4. aningeniousname
Jimi Hendrix, as for acoustic I'd probably say Lightening Hopkins.
    1. bloggernoob
      i second that
  5. kat822
Umm Ted Nugent, WANGO TANGO, what ? I gotta support the hometown boys, oh a well Peter Frampton but what can I say he's not from Michigan
    1. acousticguitarist
      Thanks Kat

Did Ted come to mind first?
    2. kat822
shamelessly yes ....ummm personally I don't know the diff between accoustic and electric ok now i feel dumb
    3. acousticguitarist
thanks, it's not shameless. I liked his sound
  6. Theresa111
Paul McCartney. Well, you did say first. Now my husband is looking at me like I should have thought of him first. Oh boy!
    1. acousticguitarist
but did you think of him first?
    2. Theresa111
No, I thought of Paul McCartney first, that is why I said Oh Boy, like now I might have to go to the doggie house.
    3. acousticguitarist
Why, that's what I wanted, a first response

Or did husband weant something exotic like Scott Nygaard, Egberto Gismonti, Tonhino Horta, Nitin Sawhney or Brij Bhushan Kabra?
    4. DrowseyMonkey
I think she means her husband plays guitar.
    5. acousticguitarist
      oh...derrr ...i finally got it
    6. Theresa111
He is a great musician. A bassist.
    7. acousticguitarist
bassist often have better ears and timing than guitarists
    8. drjay1966
Then, Paul McCartney is a bassist, too (though, I think, mostly a piano player solo), though he did play guitar on Yesterday, and probably some others.
    9. acousticguitarist
Yes and a lefty. I was tempted to say he's a bassist but I let it go and then I remembered his weird picking on Blackbird
  7. gtcathey
    Steve Vai or Joe Satriani
not acoustic but they are awesome
but acoustic would be phil keaggy
    1. acousticguitarist
      who was the first?
    1. acousticguitarist
he's in a lot of peoples headsas first choice
  8. gtcathey
    definately Steve Vai
    1. acousticguitarist
      thanks, I'm after first thoughts
  9. robertstevenson
Sam Totman came to my mind first, but for acoustic: Pepino de Agostino. I only know him 'cause my son likes his youtube vid.
    1. acousticguitarist
Wow, you know Pepino d Ägostino.. now that's credibility

I have an album he made in the mid eighties
    2. robertstevenson
I only know one tune. I'll have to delve deeper. I also like some flamenco dude, but I can't remember his name.
  10. CrystalRaven
    Eddie Van Halen
    1. acousticguitarist
      interesting player...funny clothes
  11. CrystalRaven
    acoustic, Leona Boyd
    1. acousticguitarist
      Yeah , good

I 've always liked Saron Isbim as well
  12. yellaojrak
Vai. He's the awesomest. On accoustics, all i can think of is Nuno Bettencourt. He's too hot to forget.
  13. drjay1966
    Jimi Hendrix
on acoustic, Bob Dylan--even though he's not really known for his guitar playing (and there's a good reason for that), it was the Times They Are A'Changin' album that inspired me to get an acoustic guitar when I was 18.
    1. acousticguitarist
When I think of Dylan on Acoustic, I always also start thinking about Norman Blake
  14. mantiz
clapton.. but i prefer the dirty distorted sound.. petrucci, hammett, friedman, dimebag, and even alexi laiho.
  15. SweetViolet
Hendrix...I don't think anybody can top his performance at Monterey Pop.

Acoustic...I'll have to say Mason Williams (Classical Gas). Unbelievable!

    Yah, I know. I'm old.
    1. drjay1966
If it's not too personal a question: are you old enough (and fortunate enough) to have actually seen Hendrix at Monterrey Pop, or have you just seen the movie and listened to the CD like the rest of us?
    2. aningeniousname
"If it's not too personal a question" Thought you was going to ask her if she was a virgin.
    3. acousticguitarist
      It's a pretty tune CG isn't it?
  16. SweetViolet
Well, I'm certainly old enough! But I didn't have the money to go up to Monterey for the festival...I was living in San Diego and was a poverty-stricken hippie chick in those days.

But I've seen the movie numerous times and he was stupendous! "Wild Thing" had already been a hit (for the Troggs, I think), but once I saw Hendrix's rendition, it has forever been the one that comes to mind when I think of that song.
  17. carlgalloway
    richie blackmore
    1. acousticguitarist
and he used to listen to country music
    2. fstasu
I have to agree with Blackmore. Even on acoustic he's fantastic.
  18. thefly
The first thing that popped into my head was Jimi Hendrix pissing out lighter fluid and starting a fire on his guitar. That is freakin' rock n' roll right there.

    buzz buzz
    1. acousticguitarist
Although Hendrix is the bfirst player that I always think of when people say guitar, I've never considered lighter fluid and a stratocaster as a good pair
    1. acousticguitarist
nice player, never heard of him

Wish he didn't have a Flash site

The Canadian Player I like is Harry Manx
    2. HelloAnnie
I bought his DVD overseas; his music lifted my spirits. Have you watched the movie August Rush? I fell in love with the music too. My husband loves acoustic, Jimmy Hendrix, not my taste and never heard of him until I got married.
    3. acousticguitarist
      No haven't seen it
    4. acousticguitarist
      Thanks

      he's an interesting young player.

Ever heard Michael Hedges, Andy McKee?

      the-guitarplayer.com/2008/04/24/brilliant-acoustic-guitar-andy-mckee-youtub...

Hedges was the greatest, he was killed some years ago

      acousticguitarist.wordpress.com/2008/04/11/michael-hedges-the-great-acousti...

      Or Egberto Gismonti?
    5. HelloAnnie
mm, no. I will after now. thanks.
  19. KaiteeThePirate
    John Petrucci or Alexi Laiho
    1. acousticguitarist
Alexi, don't know...will check him out
    2. acousticguitarist
Interesting player, good left hand. Who's the other guy?

      www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZspGWM-aWs

What about acoustic players, first that comes to mind?

a friend of mine in Australia used to be in a small guitar orchestra in 1980, they used to do Stravinskys Firebird, Holst the Planets and stuff. Nice idea, very tight playing.... would love a transcription of that.

Thanks for the introduction to this guy
    3. mantiz
alexi kicks ass! i adore him so much that i got me an axe custom-made just like his!
btw the other guy is roope latvala, the co-guitarist in the band.
    4. KaiteeThePirate
Acoustic players... Um. I have to confess I've not listened to something that isn't metal in a good long while. I'm drawing a complete blank.
  20. myriadlife
Brian May from Queen, not sure if he is acoustic though
    1. acousticguitarist
Yeah but he built his own guitar
  21. flamingpoodle
Chris Broderick, on both accounts. The guy is insanely good. He shreds for a few metal bands and plays classical guitar too.
    1. acousticguitarist
      You're in South Africa ?

      Ever hear Steve Eliovson?
    2. flamingpoodle
Nope, never heart of him. Thanks for the recommendation, I'll track him down.

I've seen Steve Newman? He's a great guitarist too, self-taught flamenco/classical but he mixes it with jazz/fusion. He played for Tananas before Gito Baloi(their bassist) was shot.
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tananas
    3. acousticguitarist
Steve Newman is a friend of a guy I used to work with.

Steve Eliovson was a guitar player that recorded on ECM the Euro jaz label, Metheny, Towner Abercrombie etc,

He had an album called Dawn Dance, it came out in 1981, one of the best acoutic guitar albums of its time, why he never made it famous like the other guys I have no idea. He had Colin Walcott (deceased) from Oregon (Ralph Towners band. This guy was good, real good.
    1. acousticguitarist
james brown makes me laugh, he used to deduct money from his musicians pay if they made a mistake

It's a wonder the stage was big enough

Actually Prince is not a bad player when he plays guitar
  22. ttiger
    john petrucci
    1. acousticguitarist
      yeah he's good eh

his right hand technique is pretty allright for a guy that was supposedly self taught

I agree...its Hendrix. For some reason the band Led Zeppelin keeps ringing in my head too when I think guitarist!
    2. drjay1966
If you think Led Zeppelin, that would be Jimmy Page
    3. creativebug
      Oh yea....of course...Jimmy Page
  30. chethan2k4
kurt kobain.. .. [8)] the ultimate guitarist.. listen to nirvana and you'll agree.. .and the metallica guy comes next . .
    1. acousticguitarist
      very interesting player Kurbain
  31. ThriftShopRomantic
Clapton- Not really a huge Clapton fan myself, but that's whose name I somehow expect to see.
    1. acousticguitarist
he's pretty popular, he should advertise blogs on his shirt, so when people think of him it says "visit my blog at www ....."
  32. globalgirl
    Why, Tony, you of course!
    1. acousticguitarist
Gosh, I never thought of that...he says looking across the room at three guitars
  33. creativebug
Tom Morello (Audioslave and Rage Against The Machines) is also an amazing guitarist whom I love to hear....especially his Mike Test/Check is amazing

    1. acousticguitarist
      You multi process eh?

      First thought 4 answers :-)
  36. Hoeno
When I think of acoustic players I think of Mississippi John Hurt. Guitarists in general, there are too many that come to me, I wouldn't even know which was first. I am surprised I don't see Les Paul, Chet Atkins or Django up here.

    ~JD
    1. acousticguitarist
      It's a good point.

A lot of people would immediately think of Django, actually one of my guitar teachers toured with Grapelli and another one recorded with him.

Chet Atkins or Les Paul would in some circles be the first players people would think of.

But really Hendrix and Clapton opened up lots of new doorways.

But I'll tell you who's missing Wes Montgomery and Charlie Christian. For years the first thought for me would have been Wes....the greatest
  37. Theresa111
Santanna, Hendrix, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.
    1. acousticguitarist
Well you've nailed the acoustics with Crosby Stills
  38. LazyThirdEye
Jimmy Page comes to mind immediately. Yeah, it's different when I think acoustic player. I guess I'm just an electric thinker. Tim Reynolds was the first guy to pop into my head for acoustic. I don't know if I'd say either guy was my favorite but those would be the first ones I thought of.
    1. acousticguitarist
      ok, I'll go with Tim
  39. witewood
Me! Seriously though, I would think Karin Schaupp (also from Australia Tony, hope you've hward of her serene playing) Antigoni Goni, Simon Dinnigan, David Russell, John Williams. Most people might well think the latter name before the others, but I list them because these names are among my personal favourites. These are classical players though...
    1. acousticguitarist
      Classical is good Mark

      I'm stll Julian and Narcisso

  44. okokokok
    great discussion. . .

    Bill Frisell
    Leo Kottke
    1. acousticguitarist
ooohh you know Bill Frisell, his best work was with Eberhard Weber

      Kottke, saw him live
    2. drjay1966
Doesn't everybody know Bill Frisell? He made all those albums with John Zorn, not to mention the one with Elvin Jones (shortly before he died) and Dave Holland.
    3. acousticguitarist
      yeah right

If I interviewed 100000 guitar players maybe 4 might know of him and two would have heard him
    4. drjay1966
Really? Maybe he's more regional than I thought (meaning within a couple hundred mile radius of NYC). Certainly, I'd think he's less obscure than a lot of players people are mentioning...
    5. acousticguitarist
No one really knows Frisell even a lot of the jazzers don't, I know him from the ECM recordings in the eighties, In Line was beautiful, I've got some other of his albums that I don't like. His best work was on Fluid Rustle, he did some interesting Nashville stuff with Jerry Douglas.
    1. acousticguitarist
quite a good guitarist really and not just a pop star
  45. louisianabelle
    Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page
  46. polybore

    1. acousticguitarist
i8t's funny, when people say Keef, I always think about that story of Ry Cooder recording parts for the Stones
    2. Mel4576
I lost alot of repect for him when I read his tuning was different than standard to make it easier for him to play holding a cig or drink!!
    1. acousticguitarist
      Thanks

I have a database of thousands and thousands in my head, what I want is FIRST THOUGHTS
  50. okokokok
A bit more on Frisell and Kottke. . .for what it's worth - I first heard Bill Frisell in 1988 on a tune called "Dumbo and Timothy" from a Disney compilation called Stay Awake. It's quite the listen. I've been a fan since.

Leo Kottke's 6 & 12 String Gutiar album I bought in (probably) 1970. . it's the only recording I've owned in vinyl, cassette, 8-track tape, DAT, Mini Disc, CD. . .
  51. blogonsmog
Tiny Tim .. tiptoe through the tulips - Oh wait a minute that wasn't a guitar.
    1. acousticguitarist
yeah, we're stretching it a b it there, or maybe shrinking it
  52. Arikbo
    first thought - Mark Knopfler
  53. Redbeard76
First - Jimi Hendrix, followed by a close second in Eric Clapton.
  54. jifdc
    Ritchie Valens........ oh yeah......:)
    1. acousticguitarist
      that's an interesting response
  55. clioandme
First time I saw the thread title it was Jimi Hendrix. This time it was Jorma Kaukonen.

And now Robert Fripp's sounds are coming into my mind. And Phil Manzanera. And Tom Verlaine. Better stop now.
    1. drjay1966
Jorma Kaukonen--he may be my favorite, or maybe Keith Richards, or Neil Young, though none came to my mind first. Tom Verlaine's also incredibly underrated. (Obviously, I put passion before "chops).
    2. acousticguitarist
      Jorma yes great and Jukka?
    3. acousticguitarist
i find Fripp interesting, he's like a scientist
    1. acousticguitarist
Hey little guy...you're too young to listen to Runs and Goses, wouldn't you like teletubbies? :-)

    1. acousticguitarist
is there a song stuck in your head?
  65. msbaby
I'm assuming you want the first guitarist that comes to mind and then a favorite acoustic player. The first guitar player that came to mind has already been mentioned, Eric Clapton. I'm not a huge fan of his blues tracks, but I like his approach to music overall.

When I think a minute and go beyond mainstream these players come to mind.

When I'm in the mood for fast, manic electric guitar, Lonnie Mack is beyond compare. WHAM will take me from dragging to energetic every time.

For my acoustic pick, I have to say that Elizabeth Cotten stands out in my mind. Elizabeth Cotten's finger picking style set the bar for others and every time I listen to her songs it seems that I hear something new.
    1. acousticguitarist
Yes it was first responses I was after, the one before the brain cuts in

lonnie mack, wow. I used to have his album which had the first recording of Stevie Ray Vaughan playing acoustic

It's interesting what you say about Clapton, I was only thinking about that yesterday because I heard a CD in a shop with him playing blues with BB King. I remember a very good blues player saying that about 20 years ago and it almost turned me off his music. it was just a subconscious response that I had. I separate his blues into his own unique style, as a guitar player myself, I see a wealth of stuff in his playing
  66. bradhart

  69. ArsenicCookies
Dimebag Darrell and Brendon Small, both at the same time
    1. acousticguitarist
did they beat each other up?
    2. ArsenicCookies
haha no, I think Dimebag (RIP) was under rated and I was watching a Dethklok TIVO when I answered so that is where Brendon Small came from. Randy Rhodes was also insanely talented.
    3. acousticguitarist
Dimebag, yes I know how good he was

Used to think he was a blues guy wanna be, but he was at BB King's blues museum opening and was on stage with Robert Cray, BB and others and surprisingly he stood out. He was not the first that came to my mind, but probably should have been so I'm adding him now.

    4. Sway
I don't know the name of the song but it's the last one on the album: "Vulgar Display of Power" I assume that is him playing acoustic at the beginning but I don't really know. It might be the 'other guy.' Anyway I have always really liked that song.
  95. izzy69rocks

  100. Mel4576
Steve Vai comes to mind first for electric because I think of the guitar duel in the movie Crossroads that made me want start playing the guitar

Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young come to mind first when I think acoustic
    1. acousticguitarist
      thanks CSN

      I guess Crosby comes first?
  101. ranist22
And for acoustics (you might have to look her up but she's very well known)I forgot to mention the fabulous Souad Massi, who comes from Algeria, sings in Arabic and occasionally French and is DIVINE!
    1. acousticguitarist
      Interesting

Pierre Bensusan, my all time favourite acoustic player was born in Algeria
  102. ranist22
Souad Massi merits attention. She trained in classic, but then her style became folksy and trad. They call her the Algerian Joan Baez but I don't think there is a similarity. Souad left her home for political reasons and has been in France since then. I have seen her in concert and for fingerpicking she's real class.

  123. wagerwitch
I'm gonna say this.... But you're going to laugh.

I have a garage band... We suck - we're old people - but we make our own music - and WE HAVE A TON OF FUN!

But - when you say guitarist...

I think of my guitarist FIRST.

And then I go - oh -- he meant REAL music... Hmmmm...

Then the song that comes into my head - is Carlos Santana... Playing... And it stays there.... And I forget the question as I doodle off to something else - and maybe write a lyric set to some of our Bad Ass Meatloaf songs (our songs that haven't gone anywhere yet, haven't been orchestrated nor have real lyrics to them - that's what we call them... Bad Ass Meatloaf.... Cause the potential for a far out sandwich...)
