Eric Clapton
Not sure if I really thought about it I'd stay there, but that's what popped into my head when I read your question. -
-
Umm Ted Nugent, WANGO TANGO, what ? I gotta support the hometown boys, oh a well Peter Frampton but what can I say he's not from Michigan
-
Paul McCartney. Well, you did say first. Now my husband is looking at me like I should have thought of him first. Oh boy!
-
-
-
-
Sam Totman came to my mind first, but for acoustic: Pepino de Agostino. I only know him 'cause my son likes his youtube vid.

Jimi Hendrix
on acoustic, Bob Dylan--even though he's not really known for his guitar playing (and there's a good reason for that), it was the Times They Are A'Changin' album that inspired me to get an acoustic guitar when I was 18. -
Hendrix...I don't think anybody can top his performance at Monterey Pop.
Acoustic...I'll have to say Mason Williams (Classical Gas). Unbelievable!
Yah, I know. I'm old. -
Well, I'm certainly old enough! But I didn't have the money to go up to Monterey for the festival...I was living in San Diego and was a poverty-stricken hippie chick in those days.
But I've seen the movie numerous times and he was stupendous! "Wild Thing" had already been a hit (for the Troggs, I think), but once I saw Hendrix's rendition, it has forever been the one that comes to mind when I think of that song. -
-
The first thing that popped into my head was Jimi Hendrix pissing out lighter fluid and starting a fire on his guitar. That is freakin' rock n' roll right there.

Thanks
he's an interesting young player.
Ever heard Michael Hedges, Andy McKee?

Hedges was the greatest, he was killed some years ago

Or Egberto Gismonti?

Interesting player, good left hand. Who's the other guy?
www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZspGWM-aWs
What about acoustic players, first that comes to mind?
a friend of mine in Australia used to be in a small guitar orchestra in 1980, they used to do Stravinskys Firebird, Holst the Planets and stuff. Nice idea, very tight playing.... would love a transcription of that.
Thanks for the introduction to this guy
-
-
Chris Broderick, on both accounts. The guy is insanely good. He shreds for a few metal bands and plays classical guitar too.
-
Nope, never heart of him. Thanks for the recommendation, I'll track him down.
I've seen Steve Newman? He's a great guitarist too, self-taught flamenco/classical but he mixes it with jazz/fusion. He played for Tananas before Gito Baloi(their bassist) was shot.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tananas -
Steve Newman is a friend of a guy I used to work with.
Steve Eliovson was a guitar player that recorded on ECM the Euro jaz label, Metheny, Towner Abercrombie etc,
He had an album called Dawn Dance, it came out in 1981, one of the best acoutic guitar albums of its time, why he never made it famous like the other guys I have no idea. He had Colin Walcott (deceased) from Oregon (Ralph Towners band. This guy was good, real good.

When I think of acoustic players I think of Mississippi John Hurt. Guitarists in general, there are too many that come to me, I wouldn't even know which was first. I am surprised I don't see Les Paul, Chet Atkins or Django up here.
~JD-
It's a good point.
A lot of people would immediately think of Django, actually one of my guitar teachers toured with Grapelli and another one recorded with him.
Chet Atkins or Les Paul would in some circles be the first players people would think of.
But really Hendrix and Clapton opened up lots of new doorways.
But I'll tell you who's missing Wes Montgomery and Charlie Christian. For years the first thought for me would have been Wes....the greatest

Jimmy Page comes to mind immediately. Yeah, it's different when I think acoustic player. I guess I'm just an electric thinker. Tim Reynolds was the first guy to pop into my head for acoustic. I don't know if I'd say either guy was my favorite but those would be the first ones I thought of.
-
Me! Seriously though, I would think Karin Schaupp (also from Australia Tony, hope you've hward of her serene playing) Antigoni Goni, Simon Dinnigan, David Russell, John Williams. Most people might well think the latter name before the others, but I list them because these names are among my personal favourites. These are classical players though...

My honest first thought is Brian May of Queen. For example

here's a whole slew of them if you need more

A bit more on Frisell and Kottke. . .for what it's worth - I first heard Bill Frisell in 1988 on a tune called "Dumbo and Timothy" from a Disney compilation called Stay Awake. It's quite the listen. I've been a fan since.
Leo Kottke's 6 & 12 String Gutiar album I bought in (probably) 1970. . it's the only recording I've owned in vinyl, cassette, 8-track tape, DAT, Mini Disc, CD. . . -

First time I saw the thread title it was Jimi Hendrix. This time it was Jorma Kaukonen.
And now Robert Fripp's sounds are coming into my mind. And Phil Manzanera. And Tom Verlaine. Better stop now. -

I'm assuming you want the first guitarist that comes to mind and then a favorite acoustic player. The first guitar player that came to mind has already been mentioned, Eric Clapton. I'm not a huge fan of his blues tracks, but I like his approach to music overall.
When I think a minute and go beyond mainstream these players come to mind.
When I'm in the mood for fast, manic electric guitar, Lonnie Mack is beyond compare. WHAM will take me from dragging to energetic every time.
For my acoustic pick, I have to say that Elizabeth Cotten stands out in my mind. Elizabeth Cotten's finger picking style set the bar for others and every time I listen to her songs it seems that I hear something new.-
Yes it was first responses I was after, the one before the brain cuts in
lonnie mack, wow. I used to have his album which had the first recording of Stevie Ray Vaughan playing acoustic
It's interesting what you say about Clapton, I was only thinking about that yesterday because I heard a CD in a shop with him playing blues with BB King. I remember a very good blues player saying that about 20 years ago and it almost turned me off his music. it was just a subconscious response that I had. I separate his blues into his own unique style, as a guitar player myself, I see a wealth of stuff in his playing

First one that came to mind is Nancy Wilson, but that is probably because I just saw her live Saturday night. They did the song "Alone" acoustic during the show. Heart rocks!!
-
Sticking by my comment above, but wanted to add one;
Keb Mo
Used to think he was a blues guy wanna be, but he was at BB King's blues museum opening and was on stage with Robert Cray, BB and others and surprisingly he stood out. He was not the first that came to my mind, but probably should have been so I'm adding him now. -

Nuno Bettencourt (New Extreme-album is in the mail, yey!)
(He pops in first for both styles of guitarists for me.) -

Its actually only for one song that comes to mind at first since you said acoustic.

Time of your life.
I love this song.

Steve Vai comes to mind first for electric because I think of the guitar duel in the movie Crossroads that made me want start playing the guitar
Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young come to mind first when I think acoustic -
And for acoustics (you might have to look her up but she's very well known)I forgot to mention the fabulous Souad Massi, who comes from Algeria, sings in Arabic and occasionally French and is DIVINE!
-
Souad Massi merits attention. She trained in classic, but then her style became folksy and trad. They call her the Algerian Joan Baez but I don't think there is a similarity. Souad left her home for political reasons and has been in France since then. I have seen her in concert and for fingerpicking she's real class.

for a little different response:
Tom Morello
for acoustic, the first thing that comes to mind is Rodrigo of Rodrigo y Gabriela, which i saw live recently.

It appears most here don't know the difference between acoustic and electric, although a few got it right.
When you say acoustic more than one comes to mind....
Tony Rice
Robert Johnson
Bryan Sutton
Doc Watson
Merle Travis
Jerry Reed -

I'm gonna say this.... But you're going to laugh.
I have a garage band... We suck - we're old people - but we make our own music - and WE HAVE A TON OF FUN!
But - when you say guitarist...
I think of my guitarist FIRST.
And then I go - oh -- he meant REAL music... Hmmmm...
Then the song that comes into my head - is Carlos Santana... Playing... And it stays there.... And I forget the question as I doodle off to something else - and maybe write a lyric set to some of our Bad Ass Meatloaf songs (our songs that haven't gone anywhere yet, haven't been orchestrated nor have real lyrics to them - that's what we call them... Bad Ass Meatloaf.... Cause the potential for a far out sandwich...) -
Steve Vai
I love his video for "For the Love of God." It just makes me want to go out and grab my guitar right now.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=sp1fLW-DS8Q
oh yeah, and ME also.
