I am not a child who functions on the reward and punishment model and I am amazed when I meet other adults who choose to cling to such childlike POV.
I find it hard to believe that any intelligent adult would choose to live their life based upon the deluded expectation of gaining some reward following death for being good when they were alive, because I'm quite capable of being good for goodness sake.
I likewise find it hard to believe that any intelligent adult would choose to live their life based upon being good under the threat that if they fail they will be punished following death by being tossed into imaginary hellfires, by a "loving" God.
In case you haven't guessed it, I have very strong POV on the religious heaven and hell (reward and punishment) model and have blogged on this subject.

Super awesome post TT,I left a comment, I think. I have a alot of the same views on the idea that we have to be good simply because of fearing a punishment. I don't think you should force someone to be one way or another. Even though I would like to see people being good hearted, if it's not their nature, I don't expect them to put on a facade out of fear. I mean doesn't religion and the bible talk about selflessness and not doing things simply to benefit yourself?
Even if there is a Heaven and Hell, I believe that if it came down to it, a person shouldn't commit good deeds simply because he wants to goto heaven. Personal sacrifice to me is also an important part of being a good person, and that a truly good person will when needed commit an evil act, or something society/religion doesn't view as good if it means protecting his/her community, or the ones he/she loves.
As corny as it is, it was one of my favorite lines from the movie Batman: The Dark Knight, and sums up what I believe can truly make a good person in the end:
James Gordon Jr.: Why's he running, Dad?
Lt. James Gordon: Because we have to chase him.
James Gordon Jr.: He didn't do anything wrong.
Lt. James Gordon: Because he's the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So we'll hunt him because he can take it. Because he's not our hero. He's a silent guardian, a watchful protector. A dark knight.

I have a conscience, and if for some reason that were to completely fail me I have laws and societal norms to guide me.

Are you aware that's there's already another thread on this same topic that's on the front page of the forum?
It's here www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/entry/do-you-believen-in-heaven-and-hell-
I agree while the topics are both about heaven and hell, the subjects are entirely different. The other poster is simply asking if one believes in Heaven and Hell, and expressed her thoughts on what they were, this post is referring to the belief as a base guideline for having to be a good person.
Same foundations, but different topics. -
- BC is a very large and diverse community. Here the members of almost all belief systems and philosophies don't seem to feel the need to post the same religious topics over and over again ad nauseum ad infinitum.
It seems only the members of a single belief system share this obsession, and give into the compulsive need to post repetitive threads that lead to the creation of ill will within the community.
Hmmm ... what does that tell us about those who do persist in posting such threads?

Morality is not and should not, contrary to the beliefs of the religious, be based on God. So the existence or lack thereof of heaven and hell should not change how you act. People who behave well solely to evade the wrath of a God, are the most morally corrupt people there are.
