OK, I am in need of some flower identification here...I transplanted my lilies last year, and somehow wound up with an iris, too. (I had never planted irises in the last garden, so I don't know where they came from).

One lonely iris turned into several gargantuan irises this year. Now, I've been looking around at other irises in the area, and they are all normal. Normal height, average color, average size. These irises grew to just under 5' tall - the flowers started out black, and bloomed into a beautiful rust color, and are massive - about the size of a cantalope (sp?).

What kind of irises are these things? And why are they so massive?

Now, just about everything I grow grows to massive proportions. I don't know why, but the flowers and veggies are freakishly large in my garden. I don't use any special top soil, chemicals, or other enhancers. It's just soil, and some compost from yard clippings (no food).

ANyone have any ideas?

    You have green fingers.

    Do they look like these?

      I dunno, I can't see the picture
    2. polybore
      That should be it now.

      No, those are too small.

Mine look like this, only taller, bigger and less wine and more rust colored:

Oh, and the petals stay up more...like a Nazareth Iris.

Sorry anok following that link results in a 403 verboten error.

Sounds to me like "Iris germanica" is this it?

If it is I would watch punky round it because the sap is an irritant.

They say the same about you, dear.

Outrageous! I didn't want to have to do this but you're now banned for 21 days. Please clean out your locker and hand in your key at the front desk.
    3. Anok
Yes, that sounds more like what I have. Thanks Anin ♥

Are you sure it's an iris? does it have the blade-like leaf or are they broader and deeper green than your typical iris?
    1. Anok
Yep, it's definitely and Iris - looks like it's of the Germanica variety. They're beautiful - I wish I could upload a photo for you guys.

It looks like a small iris seed slipped into the lily flower seeds product that you bought.

I don't think so - the original garden I planted had been established for nearly 10 years before I transplanted the lilies...and I never saw any irises!

Maybe a ferocious squirrel seeded it for me

Yeah, I think that an iris rhizome must have been mixed into the lilly bulbs. This is the only thing that makes sense. Also, irises transplant very well and have a tendencies to take over a flower bed, if left to their own devices.
    3. IntoTheAzureSea
As much as I like lilies, irises are quite pretty too.

I ended up with irises last year. I think the birds had a hand in putting them there. You must have good soil for things to grow so big. I have to use a nitrogen-enriched fertilizer every year or my plants don't do squat.
    1. Anok
I know, it's insane how things grow here. My lilies get to be about 6' tall!
    2. MissSuzie
      That's seriously impressive!
    3. Anok
      They're a little intimidating

Now I'm trying to figure out what these massive green leafy plants are. Punky wants to eat them, but I don'tknow that they are edible.

They look like giant prehistoric cabbage leaves, but they are not variations of skunk cabbage.

The leaves look much like banana leaves in size and shape - only greener, more supple (they are very, very soft), and they have a red stem that extends to the end of the leaf. The plant is fairly low lying - but the leaves do seem to get bush like when left unattended. (not like a hosta or cabbage plant, but the whole plant can up to 4' tall so far).

I have just thought it's not Rhubarb is it?
      onewholeclove.typepad.com/one_whole_clove/images/rhubarb_2

If it is don't eat the leaves they are highly toxic.
    2. Anok
It's neither of those, but that first plant is impressive! The leaves are longer and more slender than the first plant, and much larger than the rhubarb.

      Now I want rhubarb pie....

Unfortunately, I know practically nothing about flowers other than I love them!
    1. Anok
Ha! I love them too, but I always wind up with stuff that I can't identitfy.
    2. gosmelltheflowers
      Hurrah!

We smell them whenever we can....
