Avast! is the best i used so far. AVG (A Very Goofy) Antivirus sucks so bad. It can't detect most viruses on your PC.

    the best anti-virus software program?

    (1) YOU // don't click things you shouldn't be clicking
    (2) ANY ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE > If you keep the definitions up to date

It doesn't matter if you use McAffee if your subscription expired and you are not getting fresh and current definitions.

And, if all else fails and you like to click things - get a program like this... www.tucows.com/preview/301175

I used AVG for years, and never had a problem with it until a few months ago, when it literally crashed my computer.
One of the updates was buggy, and deleted a DLL file that was needed to start Windows (or so I've been told). So I had to (call my friend to) reinstall Windows.

I switched to Avast after that. It works well, but it talks. It says: "Your anti-virus has been updated". I fell asleep with the computer on and the speakers turned all the way up last week, and when it spoke, I woke up in a panic.

Just on a related topic (sparked by @salomey5's comment)

Sometimes - you may think you have a virus but you don't have a virus .. if you install and uninstall a lot of programs.

What happens when you install a program - the program generally sees if you already have certain files already installed and working with other programs, that it can share resources - and skips during the install procedure. Now, if you decide to uninstall that first program - all of a sudden the latest program won't work because it is missing some files that would have been deleted with the uninstall of the other program.

DLL file that was needed to start Windows (or so I've been told). So I had to (call my friend to) reinstall Windows.

This may be the reason as I mentioned or a virus - but I'm always cautious of people who tell their friends to "reinstall Windows" and think that will fix their problem. So - keeping that in mind - AVG might not have been the problem

If I recall correctly, the buggy AVG update thought that particular DLL file was a virus and deleted it. It was a well-known bug (a lot of people use AVG, so it makes sense). Even my aunt who isn't computer-savvy heard something about it on the news. And I read about it on a bunch of forums, so in that case, it was a problem with AVG.

Maybe it wasn't necessary to reinstall Windows, but I wouldnt know about that. I'm not knowledgeable enough with computers to figure these things out myself, so I have to trust someone else.

Mac OS/X. At least until it becomes more popular and virus creators start trying to target it more often. Yes, I drank the Mac Kool-Aid a few months ago.
  17. ernestlobo
Kaspersky and NOD 32 are the best...

My system came with a pro Symantec Antivirus, so I'm sticking with that for now...
  18. davetpcs
Linux...hahahaha. Really though, I have been using Linux for years and have ZERO virus problems. Go figure!

I once belonged to the AVG fail boat. Yes, there is a fail boat. Anyway, I switched to Avast instead. I rarely get viruses anyway.

If you're looking at a freeware antivirus, PC Tools definitely stand out based on my years of use. It updates most of the time and guards your PC in real-time while you leave it operating on the system tray. Sharewares are different since its functionality and use is limited only up to a certain period of time. So, you have to define your needs as there are many options available.

I use Norton and highly recommend it!

get linux forget virus.......... and btw @insomia u sud try ubuntu for a start and i don guess u'll say that again
  31. SaintSeanzy
I use the good ole paied AVG along with NOD32

Should be noted then NOD is NOT a full run anti viri proggy. It's more like ClamWin. You use it to scan individual archives as they come in.. I'd consider using it if you download allot of torrents and such.
