      I guess that's a no?

    Sleep, its waste of time.
  2. trailofpen
I woke up at around 1:30 AM, been awake since then and it's now 6:51 AM. Have to work at 8:00 AM. Went to sleep at around 10:30 PM. That's like 3 good hours of sleep.

      thats too much sleep

I got a good tip in a biology class in college. If possible, maybe over your lunch hour, get 15 minutes of exposure to sunlight. It resets your circadian rhythm and helps get you back on track. I, too, have rolling bouts with sleep difficulties, but usually just put the time to good use writing. Also, a small glass of warm milk right before bedtime seems to help, too. (Mom wasn't kidding after all!)
    3. trailofpen
I will definitely try these out.

DaniG, Sounds like good advice but instead of warm milk what about warm mac n cheese?
    5. DaniG
Mac-n-cheese is ALWAYS good! Works for what ails thee! Bunyons? Eat mac-n-cheese. Acne? Eat mac-n-cheese. Itchy teeth, hurting hair? Mac-n-cheese... Of course, you understand, I am NOT a doctor...so this advice is worth what you paid for it!

Could you go to bed a bit later and see if that helps?
    1. trailofpen
Hmmm... I might try this one time.
    2. crpitt
It you turn into a creature of the night because of staying up late, don't blame me
    3. trailofpen
I already am a creature of the night...

Found this test today, may point out stuff, it may not psychologytoday.tests.psychtests.com/take_test.php?idRegTest=1329

I scored 59 on the scale of 100. Hmm... Maybe I do have bad sleeping habits.

I had a hard time sleeping for a while. I thought it was hereditary. My dad has terrible insomnia.

But I made some changes, like restricting my caffeine and sugar intake and spending at least an hour exercising each day.

    It helped a lot.

You're always the smiley face. Your avatar makes me grin!

I usually hit the pillow close to 1am, and wake up around 7am. On weekends I get more sleep (but not by much).

You're probably worried about not being able to fall back asleep and that exacerbates the problem. Try some relaxation exercises or even just daydreaming. That usually works for me.
    1. trailofpen
My problem is that once I wake up, I don't feel the slightest bit tired. i'm wide awake and the only thing that will put me down is a sleeping pill of some sort.
    2. nothingprofound
If you don't feel tired, why do you think you need more sleep?
    3. trailofpen
Because, when it's time to go to work, it's my body's time to go back to sleep, and working while wanting to sleep doesn't feel too snappy.
    4. nothingprofound
I only asked that question because some people really only need three or four hours sleep a night to feel fully rested. In your case it sounds like you have to change your sleeping patterns. I had a similar situation when I was younger and the relaxation exercises did help. Even though I felt wide awake it was just my mind being overactive. Once I was always able to distract my thoughts I felt tired again and fell asleep.
  7. HollytheHousewife
Well I'm the exact same way as you. After I fall asleep and wake up I'm up until right around 6:30 or so,and then I feel like I can't keep my eyes open. I always end up drinking a red bull, and try to catch a couple of power 30's during the day.
  8. BeamingBalance
I wake up around 5:30am no matter what... so it definitely sucks if I can't fall asleep at night for some reason.

Sometimes I fall asleep fine (around 10pm) but wake up at 4am. At that point I just get up, but I get REALLY tired later in the day.
    1. trailofpen
My normal wake up time seems to be 1:30 AM... not good at all.

6 hours a night is my average. I'm a very active person, though so it's all I need really.
  10. kataztrophy
I normally sleep 9 or 10 hours. My productivity level is the same whether I'm unconscious or not.

When I was a kid, I remember my parents being concerned that I didn't get enough sleep. I'd go to bed at the time I was told, but instead of sleeping, I'd read.

They talked to our doctor, and he said that while reading in bed doesn't replace sleep, it's still some form of rest, and is better than twisting and turning waiting for sleepiness to hit again.

So now, if I wake up in the middle of the night and can't go back to sleep, I just grab a book. And very often, after a little while, I feel somnolent again.
    1. Theresa111
You get an A+ for that good word. I like it!

Listen up people this is a great word. Somnolent. Look it up in the dictionary.

    Hey kiddo...

I have insomnia at times. I go in cycles it seems.

    example:

    1 week - 8 hours a night.

    1 week - 4 hours a night.

Then it will go like this No sleep for 2 days, sleep 2 hours, no sleep for 3 days, 12 hours of sleep - then back to the 8 hour shifts.

I gave up trying to worry about it. And that took a lot of stress out of my life. Now I just find things to do to keep me occupied during those times when others are sleeping and I am not.

I found that if I worried about it - then I got sleepy at work. But if I just ignored it and treated it as if: "that's all my body needs this week - guess I don't sleep until later" - then I have no problems.

I think it has a lot to do with mindset. If you sit around all night telling yourself YOU SHOULD BE ASLEEP - then you will feel tired.

But if you just go like it's a normal day - then voila - it's a normal day.
    1. trailofpen
Hey, I didnt know I was so young. Thanks. My mindset usually is: look at clock, look at clock, must sleep before work... Aaaaaah!
    2. wagerwitch
You is sooooooo young... Ok - well as young as you wanna be... LOL!

I am not an insomniac but issue is multiple waking in the night. You could set on watch on me. 2 hour intervals on the dot. My best sleep hits at 5 have to get up at 6.
  14. exit2013
If you have insomnia...it might be time for a new mattress. That's what I need! Insomnia does suck! =)
  15. cazywaz
    i do have insomnia unfortunately.

Sleep Number Bed. With the economy you can get a great deal. We have had ours for four years and it was an investment but it is guaranteed for 20 years and they said it would most likely last for 40 years. You and your partner each have control of your side of the bed. Check it out.

Another sure way to go to sleep is to pray or meditate (thinking of a certain thing) before you know it it is time to get up.

Refuse to allow your mind to race about like a recalcitrant adolescent.

Hope some of this is helpful.

I'll take a nap and get back to you

The OP's not responding. I guess he fell asleep.
    1. trailofpen
Nope didn't go to sleep. Just went to work.
    2. nothingprofound
Work? No wonder you can't sleep. A regular job is the leading cause of insomnia.
    3. trailofpen
You might be right because when I didn't have a normal job, it didn't matter if I slept on schedule or not. Hmmm...

I've read that chamomile tea helps you fall asleep easier. I had an apple spice-chamomile tea once that did make me a bit more tired.

    Hopefully it works! Goodnight!
  20. pinkmonkeychatter
Six hours, but I hate to sleep. I always feel like I am missing out on something when I am asleep.
  21. pinkmonkeychatter
I thought I'd also add that sitting in front of a bright monitor at night can reset your internal clock and cause insomnia.
  22. dbowles1017
I find that starting a cult helps you sleep.

I know I am about to take my ambian as we speak
