I'm using Internet Explorer 6 at present, but a message on Facebook suggests upgrading to Explorer 7 or changing to one of the others, like Firefox.

Any thoughts about which is better? If it's just a matter of feature preference, which do you find most useful or user-friendly?

    I prefer firefox myself

Thanks, crkian. Scrolling down the line here, that seems the popular choice.

    Firefox for me!

Thanks, Saxyphone. The little face looks happy about it!

Firefox.. although just tonight I downloaded Safari: www.apple.com/safari/ You can use it for an apple OR a PC... so I decided to give it a go.

IE I refuse to use and even the latest version of Firefox was giving me problems. I hadn't had any previously, but it's been using apx. (over) 100K of memory and was running slower than molasses. Even with a patch released by Mozilla and stopping all unnecessary processes, it had a 'leak' - at least that is what one of my techie friends told me.

Anyway, this Safari thing seems to be running VERY quickly.

That's VERY interesting! My PC seems okay, but perhaps that explains my laptop's reluctance at times. Perhaps I should try Firefox on the PC and Safari on the laptop as a comparison?

Couldn't agree more with The_Mrs - I have used Firefox for about 3 years now but whilst setting my blog up decided to do some testing on safari - wow, not only faster but so much prettier; it uses Apple's text rendering so all text on sites looks much more atheistically pleasing (it makes more of a difference than you would believe). Also, whilst using Firefox all of my bookmarks were simply dumped into a folder and I would scramble through them to find a particular site, with Safari it almost encourages you to be more organized with bookmarking.

RSS reader is also much better - this I think is being addressed with Firefox 3.

    No doubt about it: FIREFOX

Once you have all the pluggins downloaded and installed, IE has nothing to do with FIREFOX.

Thanks, natxohm. Your follow-up below is actually great testimony to Firefox.

Im gonna check Safari too and see how it goes. It has to be awesome in order to discard FIREFOX because I have never had a problem with Mozilla since I first started it using 4 years ago.

I tried Safari and I like its design but I do not see many differences from Firefox. Anyway, my guess is that both of them are better than IE7. As "Toppy" said, "Anything but IE. Please"
    2. pipedreamer
Thanks for that feedback. Seems pretty convincing that IE is not the way to go!

    Anything but IE. Please.
    1. pipedreamer
Hi Toppy - that's pretty definite! thanks.
  7. doffer
Upgrade IE to 7 anyway, but I'd really recommend using FireFox. The plugins alone make it worth playing with.
    1. pipedreamer
Thanks, doffer. It sounds like the way to go.

I use Firefox for design purpose only. IE 7 is latest and most common (with 85% users). If something (design or anything) works in IE7 then it has to work on Mozilla.

    IE7 is best.
    1. pipedreamer
Hi MiLan. So Mozilla can do anything IE7 can do, but you prefer IE7 ?
  9. pipedreamer
Does changing over have any negative repercussions on existing files?
  10. xtremer
None of the above!! I would certainly choose Opera ....... it's loaded with features including a feed reader, unlike IE or Firefox!
    1. pipedreamer
Hi xtremer. I've just been reading the related discussions in the discussion "Firefox not loading Blogspot blog". I use a Blogspot template, so those discussions worry me a bit.

Your comment there about the sidebar and the way it loads is very interesting. Thanks.

Firefox for me too, definitely! I tried Opera for a while & liked it a lot, but my laptop is too slow for it & I can't access some websites with it.
    1. friedclyde
wat opera is lighter and faster than FF

I used to use IE7, now I have switched to firefox. I don't have much knowledge about these but I noticed that the number of viruses that were entering my computer has decreased after using firefox.
  13. pipedreamer
That's interesting - I've heard someone else mention the issue about viruses as well.
    Any problem accessing Blogspot sites?

    Firefox for non-work related sites.
    IE for our work sites.

Firefox for me. For a while I was in the Opera camp but when I was using version 8 it would crash unexpectedly so I went back to FF.
    1. pipedreamer
Seems like Firefox all the way and and Safari following up.

    Hey pipedreamer

Firefox is the way to go! I wrote an article on my blog not to long Why internet explorer is the worst browser
    thegnrgroup.com/blog/internet-explorer-is-the-worst-browser/
    1. pipedreamer
Hi thegnr. I read your blog - thanks. Pretty compelling stuff!

Now I also understand why my laptop crashed one day and wouldn't load up again when I switched on. It would try, then switch off again. Had to format and reload. Thankfully, I had partitioned my hard drive, so personal files were still there!

Thanks to everyone for this illuminating discussion! I only discovered BlogCatalog this week, but now I don't know what I've been doing without all of you and this site. Actually, I do - I stuffed up! It's great to be here.

      Hey Pipedreamer ;

Good to meet you. BC is a great resource I have met some wonderful bloggers on here.

Okay, I've downloaded Firefox! Seems great, and fast, compared to what I'm used to!
Should I uninstall IE6, or do I just leave it there and use Firefox as the default?
  21. jeremylong
    Firefox wins 'cos of speed!
  22. soarkaios
    Firefox. No competition.
  23. filmasia
I have both; but I use IE7 as for now
  24. dotartdude
Microsoft stopped making versions of IE for the Mac.

I was using Safari until videos started making it crash. Then I kept running into sites that said to view with Firefox.

Firefox is what I now use.
  25. DeadRooster
Way too easy to get a browser hijacked with IE. I use Firefox mostly, but Safari seems to run better (I just don't know all the gadgets yet so, for now, I'm sticking to Firefox).
    1. pipedreamer
Before this discussion, I had no idea that IE was such a risk. It's quite an eye-opener. I really thought that, apart from some functionalities, a browser was a browser!

Well, I'm using Firefox now! I still have to explore the add-ins, but I'll get there.
  26. sarahspy
when i switched to firefox i got noticably less virus threats.
