The definition of Search Engine Optimization differs depending on who you ask. My definition of Search Engine Optimization is the process of improving a website's search engine compatibility by virtue of implementing various proven website design features and functions such as choosing good content and content relative keyword selection and placement, using meta tags concisely and effectively, proper html formatting and clean code, building up as many backlinks as you can from other websites, plus a host of other methods that will ensure that your website has a high search engine ranking that leads visitors to your website after they conduct a keyword search.

    I have a blog containing posts sharing what I have learned and as the learning process is ongoing, there are even more rattling around in my head that need to be written ... lol Packing them into a summary comment here would not do them not bloggers reading them justice. I'm delighted that there are free ways to learn basic SEO like www.seobook.com/ and SEO Services and Tutorials Provided By A Google SEO Expert www.seowizz.net/

    Ok, so you rdefinition is pretty accurate; however, there are some other factors that you didn't list (I don't know why, probably to save time).

    Getting as many backlinks as possible is not really the best mode of attack. You want to make sure you know where the links are coming from, and you also want to know the differences about where the links are located in reference to the overall site. Anyone can get 10,000 directory backlinks, but are they as beneficial? You would get more from a couple PR5 contextual links with clean anchor text. Contextual links are more valuable than blogroll links, which happen to be better than footer links. So, it's not as spammy as you make it out to be.

      I believe your point is very important. I have developed criteria for selecting which blog directories I will register my blogs in. My preference is to join blog directories that are already well established, have page ranks that are higher than those of my own blogs, and that attract far more traffic than my blogs do. In addition, I prefer to register my blogs in directories where the editors review and rank blogs. If you are looking for backlinks (who isn't?) then look for directories that are :
      * Free
      * Offer one-way links
      * Have high Page ranks
      * Have high traffic rankings

      Normally I avoid automatic directoru submission sites. I haven't tried easysubmits but your post has peaked my interest. nicknorris.net/2009/03/26/easysubmits-semiautomated-directory-submission/

      What I have learned about backlinks is found in this post:
      To link or not to link?

      And I take the same position you articulated in this post Blogroll link trades: Are they worth it? nicknorris.net/2009/02/28/blogroll-link-trades-worth/
