IS Blog Catalog a Directory on Steroids?

A debate is raging on my site re Linkbait vs Directories. It's being pointed out that sites like blogcatalog.com and mybloglog.com are basically juiced up directories with a bit of social networking thrown in and are immensely popular. Does anyone still use directories?

I think blogcatalog was set up as a directory in its infancy, and did well to integrate the social aspects of the web 2.0 phenomena..
-
lyndoman.... intersting discussion though I dont see blogcatalog mentioned www.cornwallseo.com/search/index.php/2007/05/03/beaten-to-a-pulp-social-vot...
-
The initial sites listed were niche social media sites, however as the discussion continued it brought up the point that sites like blogcatalog and mybloglog are directories at heart.

Blog Catalog has helped me more than any directory ever did or, I suspect, will. Some people who start blogs (myself included) have no idea where to start, or even what's out there. Blog Catalog provides that information and a great way to find other's out there. It's a great resource BECAUSE of the community. Networking is done in SO many ways. I would have been stuck in a small mommy blog circle if I had stuck to just networking through my blog and comments. My blogging world has become much bigger and much more diverse since I discovered Blog Catalog. So, whether it's on steroids... I mean herbal supplements or not, Blog Catalog is a very good thing!

Simply having a blog directory is old fashioned i think, i don't know if people are even using them to look for blogs.
-
BC was probably the first directory I joined a couple years ago I just recently found out it was now this. I had changed blog url's so had to change but I never looked at it before now.
I think many directories will be going this way, but in the future they will be much more specific. The social networking will be more specific it will have to be there will be way too much out there and people will want to gravitate toward their interest. -
What BlogCatalog is a clone of the popular Mybloglog. In June 2005 Brad Jasper sold Blogcatalog to Jacob Gower. Jacob Gower of Bloggy Network decided to concentrate his efforts on Blogflux, Blogtopsites, and their blog network. On 20th January 2007 he sold Blogcatalog.
It started as a blog directory and was already well established with 60,000 visits a month, a PageRank of 7 and a monthly revenue of $1725 when it was sold to Angelica and Tony on Sitepoint for the price of $40000.
At the time of sale BlogCatalog had 73,000 blog owners already on their mailing list.
Andy and Tony added the social networking part of it, which is basically a clone of MyBlogLog.
Andy Beard review certainly was interesting.
andybeard.eu/2007/04/blogcatalog-slam-dunks-mybloglog.html -
I'd suggest that calling us a clone isn't an accurate assessment.
While the underlying technology may be similar, BlogCatalog has a completely different approach and responsibility to our community than MBL has to theirs..
This difference is evident by the blog approval process. Every day we reject close to 2/3s of blog submissions on BlogCatalog. At MBL anyone can submit a site (whether it’s a blog or not) and set up a personal profile. Despite slower growth because of this we believe the high quality of our members and the large number of interesting conversations on Blogcatalog is in direct correlation to the quality of the blogs in the index.
A second major difference between BlogCatalog and MBL is that we are fanatical about listening and engaging our members in conversations & coming up with ideas that will strengthen the community.
An example of this are The Blogging for Good Challenges we hold every 2 months. The 2 we have held so far, DonorsChoose.org and the Organ Donation Awareness Challenge are driven by our team’s passion to show that we are more than a bunch of bloggers who only care about how many clicks we can get. We all feel really grateful to be part of such a dynamic, intelligent community and feel a responsibility to provide ways for the community to come together for good.
So while we may have a similar looking site to MBL there are major differences when it comes to the aspects of social community that we focus on.-
Tony, I think that Andy Beard was very accurate when he pointed out all the similarities of BlogCatalog and MyBloglog. You may have a different approach for approving submission, but you can not deny that there is nothing unique here. As Andy said "Familiarity is a good thing, but it feels too much like a clone rather than a unique service." You basically copied Mybloglog. As for the challenges you host, well you know my opinion on that. One thing about Mybloglog, they have a privacy policy that tells how they are going to use our information.
-
Besides the differences to which you point, SiteProPlus, I would suggest that this community just plain feels different.
On a practical level, I've also noticed that MyBlogLog only appears to be open to members. Can you actually look through their listings without being a member? You can here, which makes this site useful as a catalog for people looking for blogs.
-
-
Blogcatalog is not a clone. In fact, I find more useful services here at BC than Mybloglog. If you ask me, I spend more time here at BC than at MBL. I even dedicated an article on my blog for BC.
I wouldn't be surprised if BC will beat MBL in the coming months in terms of everything. Cheers. I kinda see the picture of Google offering to acquire BC. -
Asthma patients sometimes have to take steroids to help them breathe easier. I did when I developed bronchial asthma.
So if bc is on steroids, well that just means my blog is breathing a bit easier (unless its the bad steroids that causes roid rage)
p.s. I just can not find it in my blogging heart to like Mybloglog.-
Well oh my goodness, it is, isn't it?
Thanks for reminding me, I'd completely forgotten. Feel free to go look and see how active I am on that site, since you care so much. I've joined a lot of sites, but that doesn't mean I like any of them.
Good thing I said "I just can not find it in my blogging heart to like Mybloglog" instead of "I'm not listed with them" otherwise we might have a bit o' controversy huh? -
I don't know about Phattitudes, but I really didn't have any sense of how much I liked or didn't like MyBlogLog until I signed up, listed my blogs, and spent a little time there. Maybe I was spoiled since I'd signed up for BC and gotten familiar with its workings first, but the only thing I really liked about MBL was the stats intergration.
-
The stats integration on MBL looks good, but I haven't bothered to add in that code, since I've already got Google Analytics (for details) and Site Meter (for a more live view and also because of the cool map with dots). I figure the more code I add in, the slower? is there any truth in this assumption?

PrettyLady... that post was written a month after we acquired BlogCatalog. We have launched many new features. To define sites based on widgets alone is a narrow comparison.
-
That does dismiss the fact that you copied Mybloglog or that you are constantly adding new features that Mybloglog has, like the new service that they just added and you added in which you included communities members belong to as part of your premium features. Now after finding Mybloglog offers it as free a service, I noticed that it is no longer included in your premium service?
-
Isn't that pretty much the nature of business and competition? A community is a community, though each may have some unique features, and some may simply do the same features better than another. A directory is a directory, though some may be more appealing, easier to use, get more traffic, etc.
Our options (and our wallets) would be much narrower if the basic approach was "well, someone already sells shoes online, so I'd just be cloning if I decided to do that...I'd better not start selling shoes online."
-
Uh-oh. I started an argument...
So, my next question is, what other sites are there more like blog catalog and mybloglog. I once signed up for blog explosion and it seemed useless. I think the widgest we put on our sites to see who visited are a great help. Then we can check out our visitors pages.-
No argument. I just agree with Andy's review here andybeard.eu/2007/04/blogcatalog-slam-dunks-mybloglog.html
-
-
PrettyLady... Andy says more than one thing in that post.
Do you really believe that MBL or any site creates all their ideas in house and that they aren't getting features from other sites too?
Does that make your forums the total clone since you didnt create them yourself but used some open source software?
Is it the software that defines the community or the people that use it and how they use it? -
Prettylady... read your post from May 9th on this thread. You say:
"I see Blog Catalog as something totally different than mybloglog. Blog catalog is a directing with the advantages of a social networking site."
And a few months later, with over 100 new features added, and now you say BlogCatalog is a clone
-
-
PrettyLady...Thank you for pointing that out over and over again to us, however lets not forget that since we took it over we have given BlogCatalog one heck of a face lift and facts remain that b/c of this, "BlogCatalog" is successful. **Plus, another great feature we have is that we love our bloggers and do and can delete anyone at the click of a mouse that might annoy others.
-
-
My personal experience of Blog Catalog is that it has a feeling of community that I greatly value. While other places, like MyBlogLog, have many similar features, the overall experience as a member, for me anyway, is quite different. A large part of it is this discussion board, which allows me to get to know other blogger members in a way I don't come to know them elsewhere. I value this.
I also enjoy the interactions we're able to have here with the humans BEHIND BC, like SiteProPlus and thegoodknife.
While I VISIT other services like MyBlogLog and SpicyPages now and then, I don't HANG OUT on them as I do at Blog Catalog. -
Angel what face lift did you give it? The design is still the same. You have added a forum and the same features as Mybloglog. The site design has stayed the same though.
Tony, yes I did say that. Blogcatalog is different in that it is a social networking site built around a directory where Myblog is just a networking site. However I don't recall saying that you did not copy Mybloglog. That you did and I was not the first to point that out or notice it. Andy was.
Angel you remove members, that is news to me? Good to know.
Blogcatalog has no terms of service though. I believe it was stated that one was not needed?-
PL ...
You say in your initial post that you, "see Blog Catalog as something totally different than mybloglog".
In a later post you say, "my points are that you cloned Mybloglog".
You then say you "you never said we copied them". This is correct. however you did say that we cloned them. As you know a clone typically refers to an identical copy.
So PL, please explain, how BlogCatalog can be "totally different", and also be a clone? -
Look Tony, I've explained it to you. You purchased a site that was just a directory and built a network around it adding all the same feature as MYbloglog accept the forum. I believe that you are using PHPizabi. I might be wrong though. Should I have just pointed out that BlogCatalog was a copycat like Andy did or? I'm not sure why you are on my case. I mean it was Andy that took a look at your new features and reveled just how close they are to those of MyBlogLog. I just happen to agree with him. Nothing wrong with that is there?
-
Rose, you apparently want to stir things up on Andy's site with your comments. Andy has shared many ideas with us that have been implemented. These features probably are not evident to you since they involve the use of tagging, OPMLs, etc. Many are features that MBL does not have.
Your comments about the Premium Feature and neighborhoods is also inaccurate. First of all, the feature is based on Friendships. Second, it is a Beta feature that will be released to all users.
What is your point about the Big Idea Competition? Are you implying that we don't have our own ideas? We have a pages and pages of ideas. However, we are focused on providing our members with the functionalities that are really needed. Who knows better than members? Perhaps you do.
Regarding the TOS> The fact that you say on Andy's site that we don't wish to add a TOS is untrue. To date it hasnt been necessary however you have proved that TOS are good to have and we will be adding one in the near term.
Would you like to contribute a draft set? -
honestly i don't why this conversation is going on, if prettylady thinks were are a useless clone, let her think that, no one is going to convince her otherwise. Sure, we drew a lot of our original inspiration from MBL, but that well went dry long ago. nowadays it seems MBL is even drawing inspriation from us, did no one see the update they made to their blog listing pages? the recent posts taking a more prominent role, scraping post tags, and direct feed subscription, not to mention they seem to be gung-ho about helping donors choose lately. We have all the adminration in the world for MBL and learn from their successes and shortcomings, but this goes the same for many other social communities we love.
-
Stir things up, I'm only replying to his review and pointing out things I have noticed like the fact that you have no Privacy Policy?
No, I'm sure that you will just copy Mybloglogs terms of service or you can ask some of your members to write it for you.
You have added many new features, but they are all the same features that MyBloglog has added.
MyBlogLog service allows members to show recent tweets on their MyBogLog Profiles.
BlogCatalog allows members to show recent tweets on their BlogCatalog profile page.
MyBlogLog allows online community integration.
BlogCatalog allows online community integration though this is supposed to be one of the features for those that support BlogCatalog with a six dollar donation each month.
If it feature that is being released to all members than what does the six dollars a month get us?
July 6th, BlogCatalog reported that they added a new broadcast system to the site. In June MyBloglog added that feature.
What ideas do you have that are not those ideas of MyBlogLog?
As for comment about your Competition, I was stating that you were holding one. I was not implying anything accept that maybe some of those ideas can be implemented into to BlogCatalog to make it unique.
We still have not heard any of "your" ideas for the community. That would be interesting to hear what plans BlogCatalog has for the future or are they all hush, hush.
Andy has shared many ideas with you that MyBLogLog has added that have been implemented.
-
A directory is something that you submit your blog or website to and then forget about it. As someone else mentioned, it's doubtful that anyone uses directories to find sites. That's what Google is for.
I have used MyBlogLog only as a directory. I submitted my site, made a profile, hated the interface, failed to find a supportive community, and left.
I discovered BlogCatalog and thought it would be the same. But I found it much more useful and well designed, so I have been coming back repeatedly. It just works nicely and helps me feel like I'm in touch with other bloggers. I really value the community here, so I hope it remains positive and supportive. Arguments appear from time to time, but it's expected. -
I never said that you were a useless clone. Please do not put words into my mouth. The social network part of Myblog is the clone. The new features added are all the same of Mybloglog. If you have added features that they have not, besides the forums then I must have missed those.
-
Trolling? Wait a moment here. I have been an active contributer to this forum and assisted a lot of the community members. I even brought it to the blogcatalog communities attention that Lindsay Ashford admitted Pedophile even had his girl love blog promoting pediophila listed in the directory. That was until Angelica removed it. If I never had BlogCatalog best interest in place, why would I even suggest that you should have a privacy policy and a terms of service?
-
Pretty Lady..
Thank you or making this place an even better community than it would be without you.
The fact that we have smart people such as yourself sharing ideas, criticisms and providing feedback makes BlogCatalog an amazing place.
This is clear evidence that BC truly is different to MBL. We can compare tools offered by MBL and BC all day long and not recognize this most important difference - the quality of the BlogCatalog community.
This is the difference we are after - and the difference we will continue to focus on strengthening by continuing to fanatically focus on our member's needs (btw the "fanatical" focus is a Rackspace clone) -
So why is it that you have removed my account? Is is because I have offered a critic that you disapprove of. Wow if that is not censorship. I thought that this forum was open to everyones opinion. I was only pointing out some things that have already been pointed out. Yes you did say thank you, but someone pointed out in privatethat you were being sarcastic.
-
Why not disclose in your recent post about BlogCatalog that you run competitive forums?
Please have some full disclosure Rose, so that people can read what you are writing with complete understanding of where you are coming from.-
What are competitive forums? Or do you mean forums that could be seen as competition for these? If so, the full disclosure would really help. That's how I crossed PL once before. She was talking about a blog directory, which I did not realize was her husbands. So I asked some questions that I would have phrased differently if I had known about the connection.
-
My half sister used to go this one walmart near us. She did nothing but complain constantly about the site of the store, about boxes in the way, about the service, she picked fights with the cashiers and always made them do tons of price checks before ringing up her actual purchase, only to change her mind a gazillion times. There are 4 other walmarts close to her, 2 of which are clean, great service-wise and one is even a supercenter with more things. Yet she continuously went to the same walmart, just to show her ass.
The moral? People who constantly complain about places they voluntarily visit should just stop visiting if they have so many issues.-
I'm not the only one to notice that it is not unique.

"lots of laughs", but sometimes also "lots of love"
When I started here, I had to keep typing such terms into Wikipedia. Here are some others I had to look up: lmao, imho, rofl. None of this is regular English, but rather internet-speak.
See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_slang
-

What point is that?
Speaking of points, More Doubts has pointed out that not of us are gaining any PR value for our links in this directory.
moredoubts.wordpress.com/2007/06/07/blogcatalog-is-not-what-it-shows -
"not of us"
Me fail English? That's unpossible.
-Ralph Wiggums
The point is that you are just an annoying attention seeker that couldn't put forth a logical argument without shooting yourself in the foot repeatedly. Not only to a large portion of the users on this site dislike you, but you now have the people that run it turning against you. Way to go genius.....
To quote modern poet and philosopher Vince Neil... (you were probably like 30 when this song came out)
"And remember what I say girl
And it goes this way:
Girl, don't go away mad...
Girl, just go away!" -
PL, why do we need a direct PR benefit for our links here? Other blogs have linked to me, because they discovered me here, whether in the directory or these forums. I've noticed some Stumble traffic on my tumblelog too. That's all because of BlogCatalog's dual identities as a directory and an amiable place for bloggers to hang out and learn from one another. If some of the individual features can be found elsewhere, the sum total of their effect makes an enormous qualitative difference over any comparable site. That's why I said above that BC is unique. It might have learned from others. (Why shouldn't it?) But it has put them together in a rather unique package that only with time am I coming to appreciate.
I'll update my judgement on my blog after I've been here longer still. -
Rose, no one is turning against you. You're understandably very sensitive at the moment and obviously looking for a place to displace some anger, and that anger has been directed toward several different people here in turn, and for very little visible reason. I think that most of us understand the tough time you're having and are working hard not to respond in kind when you seem to read an attack into every post, whether or not it has anything to do with you, and lash out when someone disagrees with you about even issues commonly accepted to fall into the "multiple schools of thought" category. I'm truly sorry for the way you're feeling and for the fact that you perceive people to be attacking and turning against you--I know that you mean that, but from an objective standpoint I simply haven't seen it happening. I'm praying for your peace of mind. Maybe for your own sake this isn't the best time to be generating reviews and making posts that you know are likely to be hotly debated?

April 17, 2007 marks a very important day in my life. As I am prone to recall dates and celebrate little anniversaries, I also remembered it because it is the birthday of my ninth grade boyfriend. What a sweet lad he was. This date was the day I added my URL address with many blogging communities suggested to me by BlogToolKit.com. Needless to say the hosting site I use pointed me in these direction of the cyberspace blogging world. Little did I understand the implications of this.
Even though I registered with many of these places, none has made me feel welcomed like BlogCatalog.com has. I have received excellent customer service, help each time I requested it, countless times in fact. After learning my way about I found comfortable here. It was unlike, in spirit, any other community or directory I had visited. The community is cozy. The writers for the most part are pretty great.
Personally, I have found when a place is comfortable and people pass the word, their memberships begin to multiply. The members are happy and the administrators implement a new server to afford regular and new members the best they have to offer.
BlogCatalog.com has announced their running a contest to give we readers and writers a way to imput what we would like to see become a working part of this home base. It also brings us together to have a little fun, put on our thinking caps and compete. Better yet it makes us feel our opinions matter.
The reason I am listed on MyBlogLog.com but do not use it. is that it feels uncomfortable to me. The only thing I got from their forums were young members sending me some spam, so I decided to simply let the matter drop. I do not visit their site. I prefer BlogCatalog.com over MyBlogLog.com. To each his or her own.
PL………Now, I recall leaving you a kind review on your site, but you, as a fellow web log writer did not reciprocate. Nor were you expected to. And in the discussion forums, it seems that sometimes you get the bit between your teeth and cannot bear to let a matter go. You force your point down our throats, repeatedly and that makes me feel uncomfortable. Then after to seemingly attack these good people and this wonderful community, you write a very forceful post today. At the bottom of your post you ask us if we want to buy Rose a cup of coffee. Perhaps another time.
I thought better of you. This is not the way I expected you to present yourself. I like you PL and for this reason I am disappointed. Please forgive me for becoming perturbed by your behavior.-
Theresa, I have not attacked these good people at all. I pointed out the similarities of two sites which has already been pointed out on various sites throughout the web. I never said that I did not like BlogCatalog.com
Anyway, I have stated my opinion and anyone is welcome to leave their opinion on my post too. I will post all difference of opinion as long as they are respectful. -
MadamX, I was replying to pointlessbanter's comment that I have the people who run this site turning against me. I was asking a question. I was asking him if they are turning against me because of my post? Pointlessbanter is the one who pointed out they were turning against me.
MadamX, my post commenting that BlogCatalog has copied some of MyBloglog functions has nothing to do with my being sensitive this week.
I'm not angry or am I attacking anyone here. I'm just calmly debating.
However if you must bring up this past week, where were you? I'm not sure how you missed the attacks by some community members that were unacceptable and not funny at all. I think Tony certainly did the right thing by deleting some of those replies and if I said something so uncalled for then my replies should be deleted too.
However, the forums is something totally different and I have already mention that I think there should be a terms of service in place.
Tony, I'm sorry if you feel that there are intentions behind my review. I'm just exchanging ideas here.
Someone said to me this week "The best way to win an argument, is to avoid it."
So with that said, I'm done commenting on this. As much as I have a lot to say on the topic, I think it is best to just end it here or continue it on my own blog.
Don't you think?
I think Blogcatalog has something here. I think that there are a lot of wonderful members who bring a lot to the community, but there are some areas that could be approved upon and I'm really hoping that Tony and the Blog Catalog team will make those changes.
-
Just lighten this corner of the world, I thought I'd share what another blogger did somewhere else ... draw a parallel between this conversation and something completely different.
Enjoy! www.mindspring.com/~mfpatton/sketch.htm-
Oh, I loved that Monty Python sketch! Absolutely brilliant! (I'll bet it's on YouTube somewhere.) And let's face it, sometimes we do want to argue just for the sake of arguing. Now, Rich, stop being so annoyingly friendly so I can argue with you. If I recall correctly, you were nice to me yesterday too.
-
I was nice to you? Oh my ... hey, let's argue about that.
I really don't think I was being nice at all and if I was there must be a misunderstanding, because so and so said on their blog (and not me, mind you) that I wasn't being nice, so even if you are really think I'm being nice then I'm going to post on their blog that you said I was being nice because I really wasn't being nice and that means they disagree with you and sooooo, the whole world will know that you are wrong and I'm right. But you know, don't take it personally, cause I really do like you and I was just trying to be nice. Geesh.
LOL!
-
-
You don't, but I was just commenting how many people state that they submit here because of the PR 7 and someone has remarked and noted that on the PR view of it, it does not make much difference as you are not benefiting from BlogCatalog's PR. I never said members did not benefit other ways. I hope this answers your question.
-
This is silly, but I'll pass the information along anyway: If I type in my first and last name on Google, I come in at the top of the first page with my personal page. But if I just type in my last name, I'm nowhere to be found until the fifth page. And then it's not any of my pages, but my profile page at BC. So in a wierd little way, I can benefit from BC's page rank, if someone is trying to track me down and remembered what I did, but not my first name. Obviously, this is outside the scope of blogging, but it still matters to me, because I have moved a lot in my life and lost track of some good people.
(I've mentioned this elsewhere, but I thought it fit into this context. Sorry for the repetition.)-
Similarly, I typed in some kind of search this morning (I don't recall the exact term) relating to Catholic blogs, and two of the entries on the first page were pages on BC that listed my Catholic blog (which showed in the description text for both), so we may be getting search traffic through BC even if it's not boosting our own SERPs.

I have to say that I am a member of many directories...but which one makes me feel like I am valued????BLOG CATALOG...I think that their high standards have made a difference. I come here everyday...do you think I visit the other directories everyday NO!!! Here it feels like I am valued...and like it matters what I say. I think its great that they decline 2/3s of the blogs and if they see someone they don't like they can delete them (but don't do that to me :)) I think this has become a great place and I don't care if people say they are copies because they are nothing like it.... Thanks again BlogCatalog
-
@%#$!!!!! I really feel I could say a ton of stuff on this topic, like beating on the owners in their own forum might be in poor taste, that digging for quotes in previous threads is tiresome, that any member can simply move along if they find this place unpalatable, etc., etc. But I won't. I only come here because it is fun (sometimes).
So...where were we? -
"Objection." said I. "Objection to the obstinate and the obnoxious occasional occupancy of the obtusely obtruding obstruction of the obstreperous occupation herein this discussion."
……………"Oh yeah, fear of heights. You mentioned fear of heights, did you not?" -
Some days it feels a bit like watching the scene of an accident... It's gruesome and horrifying, but you just can't not rubberneck. :-)
I've said it before, I think there's a lot of value in BlogCatalog. There's a great cross-section of people, with interesting ideas-- it's a good way to keep up on the latest trends in blogging, and as for MyBlogLog, I am listed with it, but I really don't go there; it's not structured in a user-friendly way, and to me, that makes a huge difference.
Plus, I wouldn't get the chance to be exposed to so many varied ideas all at once. Asking the users for input is the way all good businesses work to improve their products. It's one of the building-blocks of smart marketing. -
