Is Blogging Damaging your Character?

Ok so I run my own business and still work a full-time job and I love writing and blogging, it helps me to release when I have so much on my mind and it’s somewhat therapeutic for me. But for some reason I get a lot of criticism from people who know me personally saying as the owner of my company it’s not a good idea to put my personal business out there because it can be damaging to my character and brand. When I write or blog it usually relates to my personal experiences (anywhere from my post partum depression to abusive ex boyfriends). I never thought it was a big deal. Should I be more reserved when writing? Can it really be that damaging?

If you want to bare all, sure, it can be damaging. It's easy to forget that your worst enemies have as much access to what you print as do your best friends. Worse, you have no control over how someone interprets what you say. Tone can be everything and it is completely void in a post. It's a benefit versus risk question. If you get no benefit from exposing a risk, why do it? I predict there will be a LOT of people filled with great regrets over what they have printed at one time or another. Many will never have the chance to explain themselves. Even if they tried, it might not be successful, as first impressions are pretty powerful. Good luck on this one.

I have heard the same thing. I am currently looking for a job, and I am well aware that if you google my name, my blog will pop up, which is highly HIGHLY personal. I've been somewhat cautious in writing about some of the really sordid tales of my life for that reason, but for the most part I'm letting it hang out. Honestly, I'm a little tired of being stifled.

It depends on what you write as to whether it's damaging or not. But rest assured whatever you write WILL be connected to your name and your brand (if you have one.)
My husband and I recently went to court for a business matter and the attorney for the other side had printed out my blogger profile and clearly had read my blog. Luckily I didn't write (or do) anything "damaging" but I was really surprised.
I actually felt a little violated to be honest, but it proved to me that anything you do online is completely public. -
Everybody knows that we are all human with our own lives. I would think it could be a good thing, people can see that there is a person behind the business and see who you are. They may feel more comfortable. I show who I am online, pigtails and all, and I gain a lot of respect. Though I have to be honest, I don't wear the pigtails everyday however I have worn them to work throughout the years in a few different occupations, to dinner, to Atlantic City, to my daughter's school and much more. Some people would tell you that I shouldn't wear my hair like that if I want respect, but I never had a respect issue. I am who I am.
