Michael Vick was indicted today for allegedly running a dog fighting ring. What are your thoughts on this subject...obviously it's wrong. I will return the favor.

Is there no love for pooches!?

Dog fighting is very, very wrong. But Michael Vick is being charged with something worse than that: hanging, electrocuting, and otherwise killing "under-performing" dogs. That was a gruesome three minutes I listened to this morning on NPR's Morning Edition: www.npr.org/templates/rundowns/rundown.php?prgId=3

    It's disgusting.

Agreed. If he's guilty, I hope they nail him. At any rate, we probably won't have to listen to him try and read an AirTran commercial again. You'd swear English was his second (or fifth) language...

I think for the majority of people, it goes without saying. It's akin to asking "Is torture wrong?"

It might "go without saying,' but dog and cock fighting are still lucrative businesses.

It pretty bad to say the least. Consider that he was training dogs to kill other dogs for entertainment. Further, the cruelty in how he discarded the losing dogs is just horrible. It's a really bad story and one I don't believe he will shake easily. I mean this guy has everything - except grey matter.

He probably has grey matter, just no conscience. Still, there is the presumption of innocence until proven guilty, even if a grand jury indictment is nothing to sneeze at.

If he is found guilty he will not "shake" this story.

Yeah, the thread began with "allegedly"

It's obviously illegal in the United States and other countries, but in some cultures it's a way of life.

Cock fighting is very prevalent here in the Philippines. I don't agree with their methods (like adding razor blades to the legs to shorten the fights) but it's part of their culture.

I'm not aware of dog fighting being part of any other cultures, but I'd venture to say there has to be at least one culture that condones it.

Bear-baiting was once part of English culture, but it didn't make it right. And English culture eventually developed other sensibilities. I won't condemn a culture I don't understand, but nor do I see how culture and tradition can be used to justify cruelty.

On a somewhat tangential note: camel racing is important in the Middle East, but the jockeys are usually very young boys and the racing amounts to cruelty at times. I recently heard a report about camel racers buying simple robots to perform the jockey function. In other words, they figured out a way to preserve culture and reconcile it with developing notions of human rights. (My source on all this is diverse reports on NPR. Can't remember the dates or countries involved.)

I replied in my blog. We need stronger laws to help law enforcement keep these people from just paying fines and starting up again.

Dog fighting takes place in most American cities and is condoned by certain 'sub-cultures'.

People who torture animals are without conscience, best to have them off the streets.

Culture is no excuse for sick behavior, especially as time goes on and man, the economy and the social structure evolves.
