Bit of a row brewing in the UK as a Top Examiner awards 2 marks out of 27 to a student who only wrote "F*%k off" as their answer.

Link to full story and why I think it was right to award marks.

The marks from me would have been minus 2 points.

      Why the negative marking?

LOL ... that's funny. 2 out of 27 for correct spelling sounds about right to me.

2 out of 27? Why not? Just showing up and writing down the name means that there will not be a zero. But something as generous as a normal failing score would be too generous.

I once sat a university exam on organic chemistry. I was not very confident unlike a fellow student who was. When we got the marks back it turned out he had got 4 out of 80 and the lecturer wrote "crap" next to the mark.

My mark will remain a secret.

I'm always amazed at the confidence of those who turn in their exams much too early. It makes the other students early, yet these students who turn in the exam with only half the time over usually do pretty poorly.

    Minus two points.

I know I wrote some lovely words in a GCSE exam many moons ago, I must of gotten some marks for it too

Its not something that I am proud of, but in my defence the questions were on a topic we hadn't even covered.

So if it was a protest "F*%k off" then I would give them 2 marks.

When I was 7 I was called up to the teachers desk when she was marking my work. She pointed out that I had failed to put the "r" in shirt. Wish I could remember the rest of the sentence.

I was mortified. Fortunately she knew I was a good lad.

    From the BBC news article.

"The example cited was unique in the experience of the senior examiner concerned and was used in a pre-training session to emphasise the importance of adhering to the mark scheme"

Did the term "pre-training session" mean that the exam mark was not official?

Sounds like it was a test for the examiners. Or was it just mentioned to other examiners in a "pre-training session"?
    1. polybore
It was a real life example that was then used for training purposes.

It's definately worth two points because he put his name on it, it's so annoying not knowing who's exam it is when you are trying to record grades! So yes, and the chuckle I would have gotten alone would have been worth the two points

I wonder what the question was. I can imagine a lot of questions where "feck off" would have been the correct answer.

At least the student was conscious, that's worth one mark, putting pen to paper maybe worth one, depending on the question. What was the question, that is more important?
    1. polybore
The question was "Describe the room you’re sitting in"

Oh, no, that's not the correct answer then. "It's f@#ked" or perhaps "F@#king cold" maybe.
    3. polybore
Good point. Or they could just have done a fantasy description of the room.
    4. acousticguitarist
No, the student shouldn't have gotten marks. It's not a relevant answer. I'm with tiggy

Years ago I was teaching a simple web class. I asked the question in a written quiz:

"When wouldn't you use emoticons?" One student (a drummer) wrote
"When you are on the phone".

Do you think I said correct or incorrect?
    5. polybore
Mobile phones can send emoticons so I guess you said incorrect.
    6. acousticguitarist
This guy wasn't aware of mobile phones at the time. He had implied a landline when I spoke to him.

In order to cover my back I had to mark him correct. ...against my better judgement

That is exactly two words. So two points makes sense to me.

As an educator in the US, I can assure you that at every public school I have taught at the student would have received a ZERO and been disciplined!
    1. wigwam2theorem
My high school physics teacher would have given him a negative infinity...

I can see the marker's point. But I think I would have given 0.
