I have had many videos removed from you tube either completly or with audio disabled. This is because I have used music which is copyrighted. Yes I don't own the rights too the music, however I feel that this big handbags at dawn fight between the internet and the music industry has spiraled out of control and feel sort of caught in the middle. I feel that creativity is being compramised and destroyed. I have lost many hours/days graffting a video, creating something that never existed, only for it to be deleted...not happy..

I'm sure the people who make the music get tired of people stealing from them as well. Perhaps it will help with creativity. Everyone will have to come up with their own stuff.

How far will this go down the line though. Will the guy who first developed a hip-hop rythm style file a suit to get music taken down..will a distant ancestre of motzart file for copyright..

Have you considered asking the original artist(s) for permission?

the artist's signed to Warner have no individual right to authorize the use of their songs - any requests would have to go through their label, regardless of whether the artist supported or objected to the use of their music.

For indie artists, you can certainly approach them directly, but for the most part they have not objected to their content being used on youtube, because of how quickly it can increase their fanbase far beyond what any other method of advertising could ever do.

My ex-husband writes music, original music, would you like to know how many hours it takes him to write a good sounding song, with all the parts? About 50 to 100 hours, only rarely does a song flow from someone, and he has been doing it a long time, they might get part of it all at once but then it takes time to make a complete song. Then as they practice it and perform it it goes through even more rewriting.
The only creativity that is being compromised is the original artist's.
If you want to keep using other peoples work, then just share it with your friends. Otherwise, you could use a synthesizer and come up with your own sounds, now that is what creativity is really all about.

There are still record labels (like Domino Records) which allow their content to be used on youtube. Many record labels realize the amazing marketing power of youtube and so they are happy to let people use the music. While it might cost the label hundreds of thousands of dollars and even millions to market a new artist, sites like youtube offer them the ability to reach an even larger demographic for free.

For what it's worth, many of the artists aren't happy about their music being deleted from youtube either, and some have even vocally opposed their own music being pulled because of the huge number of new fans they saw youtube generating for them on a daily basis.

The reason Warner pulled their music off of youtube has nothing to do with them objecting to copyright infringement, but was simply because they couldn't agree with Google owned Youtube about how much money they would get from ad revenues. It was really never about the artist's rights anyway - in fact, the artists would likely see very little of the shared ad revenues.

Youtube has a deal with Sony, and as far as why they don't have one yet with Warner...Youtube said, "[youtube] connects music, musicians, and fans. We have deals with all of the other major record labels...It is the record labels' responsibility to represent and pay their artists."

It's only a matter of time before the other labels work out an agreeable deal with Youtube.

No I don't, how to showcase it on this one venue perhaps, but not creativity itself.

Why don't you use royalty free music? Its not hard to get hold of.

unfortunately, I'm with DarkShadow even though it's an unpopular position.

I would disagree harshly if he(she?) were selling the work for a profit, but that's not the case. It's sorta like a hobby from what I understand.

He is putting his own spin on it by 'graffiti'ing it up - it should be allowed to be shared with everyone, not just friends. We need to learn to share more, I love America and capitalism but am not for the censorship.

I have a friend who is in a sorta popular death metal band, hes told me first hand that the internet especially youtube due to it's ease of use pretty much decimated the music industry.
