Dick Major was the perfect chauffeur of Hari Nair for last twenty years. Dick was forty years old with a lovely wife(36) and two children of 8 and 6 years old respectively.
Hari Nair and his wife lived in Jodhpur Park residence along with their maid, Monica, (30 years) who helped them in managing their domestic scores for last twelve years. Both the daughters of Nairs lived in USA.
As the years passed by Dick got attracted towards Monica and wanted to marry her. Monica disagreed as he was married. But Dick was insisting, despite the fact that double marriages are illegal. Monica kept on refusing and informed Mrs Nair of the overtures and advances of Dick from time to time. Mrs Nair told her to be cautious and stop talking to Dick.. Nairs were senior citizen bordering 78 and 74 respectively and were dependent on Monica and Dick for all their domestic and outside work. They felt unhappy on the behavior of Dick but could not muster enough courage to rebuke Dick or threatened to dispense with his services .
Dick's wife came to Nairs and complained that her husband told her that he was determined to marry Monica. She requested Mrs. Nair to dispense with the service of Monica and assured that all domestic work will be done by her. Mrs. Nair refused to entertain the proposal. Dick 's wife requested Mrs.Nair not to inform Dick about her visit and the request, for he wold stop monthly expenses of the family.
The next day Nairs found that Dick committed suicide at the roof top of their house after killing Monica for refusing to marry him.
Who is responsible for this incidents? Legally killing a persons and committing a suicide is an offence . But Dick is no more alive to be punished. Why did he kill Monica? Did he really love Monica? Or is it lust for Physical relationship?? If society has a role to play to stop such incidence?
Nairs never had any role in the murder physically. They never could even visualize such an incidence. Only mistake of them was not to prevent Monica and Dick staying and meeting together. Can they be held responsible for such an ugly incidents? Do you all have any answer on it? Who is really responsible for the incidents? Who can be held responsible for such an act? Dick & Monica or environments or Nairs?

My opinion is that the Nairs should have counselled Dick and, if he persisted in sexually harassing Monica, they should have terminated him and hired a new chauffeur. All parties involved should have realized that Dick's train had left the track when he started insisting that she marry him when, in fact, he was already married and plural marriage was not allowed. His personal agenda obviously was more compelling for him than the law or for the taboos of his society if he was so openly eager to flout both.
Monica, as the victim, holds no responsibility. She did what was appropriate: refused his advances and complained to her employers. Mrs. Major's request that Monica, her husband's victim, be fired was wholly inappropriate and the Nairs were right to refuse her. That they didn't protect Monica by firing Dick lays some blame, but I suspect that would not have stopped his pursuit of her.
Dick was a stalker and ultimately a murderer. He was obsessed with Monica, which is neither love nor lust. It is unlikely that any action taken by the Nairs would have saved Monica. The responsibility is Dick's and no one else's. -
Sweet violet has very nicely analised the problem. But she has ignored the responsibility of the society all together. Dick Major lived in a society where he found that there are people, who despite existance of law banning multiple marriage, kept on maintaining relations with more than one ladies. The most of those persons were rich and known in society. Dick musty have felt that why should he be deprived himself when he felt fataly attracted. The well known people of the society maintained more than one wife but society tolerated them .Even sometime these people were honored for their role in film, politics or for story telling capacity. Dick must have been influenced from the apparent disorder of the society. There are some responsibility of the environment which cannot be ignored. Dick is of course to be blamed most. But responsibility of Nairs cannot be also pardoned and ignored.Monica is the blameless victim.Unless we reform society such incidents may keep on happening in our society. Do any one agree?
