Was just talking to my mom in Puerto Rico and she tells me that Christmas has already entered the scene. It seems that each year celebrations start earlier and earlier. Knowing the puertorrican mindset of wanting to find an excuse to celebrate I know that in the future Christmas celebrations will start in June. This got me thinking all the little (and some not so little) traditions that make this a special season. Take this opportunity and share some of your traditions with youq community.

Giving cards to people you've barely spoken to and having to put up with terrible impersonations of Mariah Carey singing 'All I Want For Christmas.'

    Winter Solstice!
A huge potluck dinner with food from every ethnic derivation you can name. All of it will be mouth watering delicious. Wonderful music and dancing. Drumming, singing and chanting. A lantern parade on the beach and no presents exchanged. I &hearts Winter Solstice!

Anyone and everyone, who is on the island is welcome to join in the pagan festivities. We even accept riders mounted on well behaved horses and ponies, well behaved dogs, and children on leashes in the lantern procession along the beach ... lol

Nice! I miss "las parrandas." These usually start at 10pm and go till 6am. Going from friend to friends home, where there is a lot of singing and eating for an hour or so. Once done the hosts jump in their car and join the group to wake the next person up and start all over again.

I just love christmas and I am busy preparing for it.
It is too early for me for the commerical stuff right now and that isn't really my scene anyone. But, I love trying it make it special for people.
So far, for my friends I have made some jewellery, I have stamped some big church candles with images and sentiments. I have squirrelled a photograph of another friends dog (while she was on holiday) and have drawn him for her. Quite funny becuase she keep dropping hints about me doing her a pet portrait and I just keep changing the subject. I think she thinks I am being really mean, it is SOOO hard to keep a secret sometimes.
I love to have a tree and decorate it and have only ever missed one year. But, I don't like co-ordinated ones, I like them to be full of different ornaments that have special memories.

oh yay! ...another year having to spend time with family members I'd rather disassociate from. ..an alcoholic sister, born-again-christian brother (who thinks i'm the devil) and an evil, manipulative mother who, I'm sure if she could, would rip my heart out and take a bite. Sorry to sound cynical, but you asked. To be honest, I wish we could skip right over November and December and get right into the new year.

Oh yeah, and I live in SW Florida. So, no snow, no falling leaves. ...just sunshine and palm trees. Since I've been here (1980) it never really has felt the same this time of year.

We really never did celebrate Christmas when I was a child. Therefore, no Chritmas memories...

Ahhh but Hanakuah bush glowed brightly!!

Christmas has no part in my tradition. The period between Samhain (November 1) and Yule (December 20) is the "Octad of Remembrance" which includes such observances as Thanksgiving, the Transgender Day of Remembrance (Nov 20), the Day of Remembrance of Sex Workers (Dec 17). But more importantly, it's a time of recapitualtion and bringing to remembrance of the things that really mattered, love gained and lost, Friends to be reunited, families to be healed. It culminates in 3 days of "Sacrifice of the Stone Mnizourin", which is not a sacrifice of blood, but of the accounting kept in our hearts that block the flow of tears and which interfere with dreaming, prayer, and innocence. These 3 days (Dec 17 to Dec 20) are the darkest time of the year, and are in my tradition as Yom Kippur is to Jews. After this, comes Yule, the returning of Light at the Winter Solstice. The merriment and commercialism so prevalent in the Christian tradition has no place in what I do.

      I think that's awesome!!!

The chirstmas season in the Philippines starts at the onset of the 'ber' months (September) and lasts well until January. It's hard to mention just one tradition because the Philippines has it all. The best part is the misa de gallo (Mass of the Rooster) a nine-day mass which is the perfect excuse to go on a date, to overeat, and stay up late the next day. It is believed that if you complete the 9-day masses your wish will come true. Christmas is such a big event in the Philippines that nothing gets done in December. Offices pretend to be open, but in reality, nothing gets done. Some say it's a bad thing but it's just the way it is... Also, we have the best christmas carols. I particularly like the song Christmas in our Hearts by a filipino artist Jose Marie Chan. I've been singing it since I was a kid. If you haven't heard it yet, search it and it will be worth your time.

Here in the Philippines, Christmas Season begins with BER month, so it starts as early as September. Actually on the first of September u can hear Christmas Carols being played on radio stations. Some as early as July, they start buying some presents to their love ones. There are some foreigners who come here just to experience Christmas in a very different, festive way. Maligayang Pasko sa inyong lahat (Merry Christmas to all of u)!

Our Christmas is usually Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. The whole family used to go to my family's house and it was a great few days. We also celebrate Hogmanay as my partner's family (and myself) are Scottish and my family is all English so New Years Day is more of the big event. And with my birthday on the 4th its a whole host of holidays!!
  31. mrwolf
Recent tradition for me, birthday celebration. I am sure that I will never forget my wife's birthday, Dec 25.

I love my family tradition. We go to Christmas Eve mass, then go home, and have a nice dinner. At midnight we open presents. The next morning I go to my fiances's and hang out there. Then we go back to my family's house and have dinner and just spend time together. We usually play a lot of games. Our family is getting bigger so it's getting even more fun!
