In some countries dogs or cats are raised to be eaten. Much like cows and chickens in America. Some people say that it is wrong to eat dogs or cats because they have "feelings" that cows and chickens do not have. I felt the same way until I ate a dog on accident and it tasted fantastic...

OK... ewww. And I'm a picky eater so I wouldn't ever consider eating a dog or a cat. I have a problem eating stuff that's considered "normal". But is it wrong? If it's part of a culture... who am I to judge?
    1. wozog
yea your right it is important to respect other people's culture and not judge. Something Americans have a hard time doing.
  2. Mewie
Chinese people eat everything. Personally, I couldn't eat cats since I love them so much - but I do know for a fact that dogs bred to be eaten are delicious. lol Can you tell that I'm a dog-hater?
  3. suburbqueen
We eat cows, chickens, and pigs...so why not? I personally could not, but wouldn't shun someone who did.
    1. wozog
If you ate something and it tasted great, then after you ate it, your friend said it was a dog, would you be angry? or order another?
    2. suburbqueen
Being as my husband did this to me with deer meat (venison), I can say I would be angry. I don't want to eat Bambi nor a dog or cat...but that's just me.
  4. Anok
Not if you're starving....but in this country it's generally frowned upon to eat the main type of animal you domesticate for companionship.
  5. mickey07dreams
I guess not..because the country where i come from, some people eating cat or dog.
    1. genopianist54
Yes, in my country, in a particular area of Sumatra, the native there made satay from a dog meat..
  6. kdawg68
I couldn't do it, but it's because culturally it's abnormal to be as an American. I don't frown on folks that do.

Now the folks that eat insects, that is where I draw the line.
    1. suburbqueen
Even if they're covered in chocolate?
    2. kdawg68
I just find it so repulsive. Then again, I'm terrified of spiders. I remember watching one of those gross out shows on discovery channel where a guy had to eat this giant spider from Africa, and it had bits of fly inside it's abdomen. Oh god I'm going to be sick all over again.
    3. suburbqueen
Ewww...thanks for sharing that lovely image. That was so very kind of you.
  7. morgantj
Is it wrong for a starving wolf or lion to eat you even though you have feelings? I doubt they would care about your feelings.
    1. suburbqueen
I doubt a wolf or lion thinks like we do either...
    2. morgantj
exactly. That's why they would eat us.
    3. suburbqueen
And why we don't eat them.
    4. morgantj
      some of us do.
    5. suburbqueen
Hmmm...I guess I should have said I then.
    6. morgantj
Really though, it's like we have a shortage of food, I don't think it is necessary to kill them to eat them. As far as it being "wrong" I guess that depends on if their dead already or not.
    7. morgantj
that should have been, "it's not like we have a..."
    8. Mewie
I wouldn't taste very good. I'm just skin and bones.
    9. Anok
I wouldn't taste very good because I'm full of piss and vinegar
  8. gosmelltheflowers
We just read about this the other day. It seems really strange to us because we keep them as domesticated pets, but I guess if you came from a culture that didn't have a lot of emotional attachments to them then it wouldn't seem so strange.
  9. BlogBadly
Maybe if they're really, reaallllyyyy delicious...
  10. jswy315
if you go to korea you can eat a dog. It looks just like a pet store. You go in and you pick the dog you want to eat. Much like lobster in America. It is served like soup and the meat is really tender and good. But it is really expensive. Dogs, frogs, rabbits, and snails are foods that people SHOULD eat before they die.
  11. inhisgloriousname
I have yet to run into that dinner plate on any menu's. But snails are tastee...
    1. jswy315
What do they taste like? I really want to know
  12. globalgirl
I just could not do it... Knowingly. I love them way too much.
    1. offendedblogger
Let me send you my Siamese for a day, she may change your mind.
  13. offendedblogger
Is it wrong that I bowhunt elk, deer, pheasant and moose and eat them?

Not to me, and not to most everyone in Idaho because a lot of people here hunt or eat game, but some guy in Korea might think it is mighty wrong!
    1. kdawg68
      I hunt albino children.
    2. Mewie
kdawg, I actually ate a horse in Japan. no joke. Not the entire thing but it did taste good.
    3. offendedblogger
      Oh, that offends me.

I love my horses. My little pygmy goats too.

I'd rather eat my cat than either of them!
    4. Mewie
      Pygmy goats rock!

Yah, in Japan, my friends gave me a piece of meat that I 'must' try. Only after swallowing it, I heard it was a horse. Surprisingly, it did taste good but I told myself I couldn't do it again.
    5. offendedblogger
Like when I ate those Rocky Mountain Oysters. They tasted great until someone told me what they were!

Ignorance IS bliss with some things.
  14. lisamcglaun
Well..since I'm a vegetarian it's safe to say I won't eat a dog or cat by accident or on purpose. And no, if I ate meat I would not eat dog or cat..ever.
  15. ModelElaine
My family has a bunch of chickens. They do not eat them
    1. samfreedom
Why? Is your family too chicken? ;-)
  16. samfreedom
This question is just wrong on so many levels.
  17. ettarose
It depends on the culture of course. There are all kinds of things people would or would not or eat depending on the culture. Watch a survivor show. If you were starving you would probably eat anything. Look at the Andes survivors!
  18. MadameX
Okay, I came into this thread intending to say that it was definitely wrong if the cat or dog in question was someone else's pet, but I was distracted by the opening post...how on earth do you accidentally eat a dog?
    1. morgantj
Somebody tells you it is chicken. Then after you eat it, they are like, "oops, my bad, that was dog."
    2. MadameX
This has been popping into my head on and off ever since I saw this thread. I keep having visions of things like a teenage kid going on a binge and then sheepishly saying, "Um...mom? I think I ate the dog."
    3. Anok
Madame X you took the words out of my mouth....as if all of a sudden you look up from your eating frenzy and think, "Oh my, where's Rover?"

  19. phoenix007
I personally wouldn't eat a dog or cat. I wouldn't be able to stomach something that once was my companion. Now, if it was cooked and given to me without telling me what it was, it probably tastes like chicken. There are several different cultures around the world who don't consider eating dogs or cats "taboo." A lot of those cultures see these animals as regular food or a form of delicacy, and some do it based on their culture's spiritual beliefs. So who are we to say that it is "wrong." Some people believe that those who eat any kind of animal is "wrong," but who are they to tell us what we can and cannot eat?
    1. morgantj
A long time ago, the egyptions would be pretty pissed off if you ate a cat. I'm not sure about now.
    2. DoubleTake
What if your airplane crashed in a remote area and your friend didn't survive? Would you eat your companion?
  20. footiam
It is wrong to eat a chicken.
    1. morgantj
      The chickens don't object.
  21. friendsofmissi
    That`s sick.
It`s wrong to eat any kind of animal.
    1. friendsofmissi
      Because I say so
  22. wordwelder
No way Jose! I've got a Collie and a Persian cat and I feed the Pigeons everyday.
  23. harrachglassbeads
Its hard to eat a pet. I couldn't.
    1. morgantj
We'll they wouldn't be necessarily considered a "pet" any more as much as they would be consisidered "lunch."
    2. offendedblogger
Exactly. I have pet pygmy goats that many people would eat.
  24. ghostytwofish
There's nothing wrong with eating a cat ... as long as it's YOUR cat.
    1. morgantj
If I can catch it, it is mine.
    2. ghostytwofish
Thus why my cats stay indoors. Crazy cat-eating neighbors.
  25. crkian
    Without sauce it is wrong
  26. acousticguitarist
I was a a vego for almost 40 years. The real truth is that the only difference between animals and vegetables is that the animals scream louder.
    1. ghostytwofish
That, and veggies don't wriggle to get away as much.
    1. morgantj
      which one, dog or cat?
  27. kdawg68
I'm just curious, what's an appropriate side dish to go with dog/cat? And what kind of wine do you serve? A pinot or a reisling?
    1. Anok
I think you'd really need a Shiraz, something a bit stronger to go with the gamier taste of cat...

And perhpas a side of lightly broiled white potat....

      WHAT AM I DOING?!
    2. kdawg68
I see, a Shiraz. In that case I shall have to bbq the meat. I've always found a Shiraz goes well with bbq.
    3. Anok
But not too tangy...otherwise the peppery flavor of the Shiraz...Oh, I've done it again!

Venison goes well with Shiraz though....
    4. Sylvia
      Hhhmmmm, maybe an Ice Wine
    5. Anok
Afterwards though...thats a dessert wine! Maybe we could also serve kitten puffs, such a delicate dessert
    6. kdawg68
You know i've never had ice wine. I've always wanted to try it though. I've had folks look at me cross-eyed when I've inquired about it at local stores.

My latest kick is MacMurray Pinot Noir.
    7. Anok
Mmmmm it is very good - in small quantities. We get the good stuff from my hubby's family - from Germany YUM! It's hard to get since it's only harvested for a short period of time, and typically has limited quantities. There is a special cookie that we eat with it too, but I can't remember what they're called. (Ohm and now because of Uri's thread I'll be forced to wake up at 2 am with the name of the damn cookie!)

I had a wine the other night, very good, very good indeed, I can't remember then name though, once again
    8. kdawg68
      that good, eh?
    9. Anok
      Oh hush
  28. sellytapgirl
    Yes. It is wrong
  29. twistedteenager
I don't think it's wrong. They have more meat than quail I'll give you that. Hell, I'd eat my dad if I had the chance.
  30. flamingpoodle
    No, it is not wrong.
Provided you are prepared to kill it yourself.
  31. bobonism
Do you want to eat your own pets?? Dare? Are you hungry? :|
    1. flamingpoodle
Actually I'm vegetarian because I'm not prepared to kill an animal to eat it unless it's a matter of survival.
  32. Kiwipulse
What about dog eating cat? It is wrong?
  33. FLOOG
I admit I am a hypocrite, in so far as I am a meat eater who could not kill an animal to eat it.

But, I am also an animal lover, particularly cats. I would not choose to eat a cat or dog personally because my association with them is too strongly towards 'pets', but I do eat cow, chicken, pig etc.

I can't justify this, other than I enjoy meat, and I have the right to choose which animals to eat or not eat if offered to me.
  34. Enlight
If your hungry enough you will eat anything.

They eat some strange things in Egypt visit clearlyenlight.net for some nice pictures if interested.
  35. Shiley
Eww... That's nasty. I would be so traumatised if I found out I ate mans best friend. I was traumatised when my mom fed me deer soup, Poor Bambi.
  36. beinki
I reckon if youz a hungry enuff youz eat anythen. but howz dids you eats a dog by accident? "My fork slipped"
  37. Anomaly
Actually, it is very common where I live now in the Philippines to eat dog. It was also a very common ingredient in the tacos I used to get from the street vendors we purchased from in Mexico. I have nothing against it but sometimes, they do tend to include parts I think should be thrown away ... and I always feel kinda funny about it when it was a dog I was petting the same day.

Cat tasted a bit powdery the only time I ate it. I have never tried it since so I am not sure if it is the meat or just the way it was cooked.

Still, I have one cat that owns me (Even if I do think I own it) and one dog ... but I would have to fight anyone who wanted to cook them.
