Is it wrong to eat a dog or cat?

In some countries dogs or cats are raised to be eaten. Much like cows and chickens in America. Some people say that it is wrong to eat dogs or cats because they have "feelings" that cows and chickens do not have. I felt the same way until I ate a dog on accident and it tasted fantastic...

OK... ewww. And I'm a picky eater so I wouldn't ever consider eating a dog or a cat. I have a problem eating stuff that's considered "normal". But is it wrong? If it's part of a culture... who am I to judge?

We eat cows, chickens, and pigs...so why not? I personally could not, but wouldn't shun someone who did.

I couldn't do it, but it's because culturally it's abnormal to be as an American. I don't frown on folks that do.
Now the folks that eat insects, that is where I draw the line.

Is it wrong for a starving wolf or lion to eat you even though you have feelings? I doubt they would care about your feelings.

if you go to korea you can eat a dog. It looks just like a pet store. You go in and you pick the dog you want to eat. Much like lobster in America. It is served like soup and the meat is really tender and good. But it is really expensive. Dogs, frogs, rabbits, and snails are foods that people SHOULD eat before they die.

Is it wrong that I bowhunt elk, deer, pheasant and moose and eat them?
Not to me, and not to most everyone in Idaho because a lot of people here hunt or eat game, but some guy in Korea might think it is mighty wrong!

Okay, I came into this thread intending to say that it was definitely wrong if the cat or dog in question was someone else's pet, but I was distracted by the opening post...how on earth do you accidentally eat a dog?

I personally wouldn't eat a dog or cat. I wouldn't be able to stomach something that once was my companion. Now, if it was cooked and given to me without telling me what it was, it probably tastes like chicken. There are several different cultures around the world who don't consider eating dogs or cats "taboo." A lot of those cultures see these animals as regular food or a form of delicacy, and some do it based on their culture's spiritual beliefs. So who are we to say that it is "wrong." Some people believe that those who eat any kind of animal is "wrong," but who are they to tell us what we can and cannot eat?

I was a a vego for almost 40 years. The real truth is that the only difference between animals and vegetables is that the animals scream louder.

I'm just curious, what's an appropriate side dish to go with dog/cat? And what kind of wine do you serve? A pinot or a reisling?

Mmmmm it is very good - in small quantities. We get the good stuff from my hubby's family - from Germany
YUM! It's hard to get since it's only harvested for a short period of time, and typically has limited quantities. There is a special cookie that we eat with it too, but I can't remember what they're called. (Ohm and now because of Uri's thread I'll be forced to wake up at 2 am with the name of the damn cookie!)
I had a wine the other night, very good, very good indeed, I can't remember then name though, once again

I admit I am a hypocrite, in so far as I am a meat eater who could not kill an animal to eat it.
But, I am also an animal lover, particularly cats. I would not choose to eat a cat or dog personally because my association with them is too strongly towards 'pets', but I do eat cow, chicken, pig etc.
I can't justify this, other than I enjoy meat, and I have the right to choose which animals to eat or not eat if offered to me. -
If your hungry enough you will eat anything.
They eat some strange things in Egypt visit clearlyenlight.net for some nice pictures if interested. -
Actually, it is very common where I live now in the Philippines to eat dog. It was also a very common ingredient in the tacos I used to get from the street vendors we purchased from in Mexico. I have nothing against it but sometimes, they do tend to include parts I think should be thrown away ... and I always feel kinda funny about it when it was a dog I was petting the same day.
Cat tasted a bit powdery the only time I ate it. I have never tried it since so I am not sure if it is the meat or just the way it was cooked.
Still, I have one cat that owns me (Even if I do think I own it) and one dog ... but I would have to fight anyone who wanted to cook them.
