Is Mackenzie Phillips Lying ?

Mackenzie Phillips who was a member of the cast of the TV sitcom One Day At A Time is now claiming that she had a 10 year incestuous sexual relationship with her biological father John Phillips, who died of heart failure in 2001 and was the leader of the 1960s group the Mamas and the Papas.
What do you think ?
Is she telling the truth or is she lying to promote sales of her recent book ?

I have no idea whether she's lying or not, but it's a pretty funked up situation either way. -
I have no opinion to offer as I have no facts to base an opinion upon. And IMO any opinion that is not based on facts is worthless.-

Where such privilege applies, which is far from universal, it applies to primary sources (and certainly not to any published source), and so has absolutely no bearing on this conversation unless you are suggesting that your "source" was a conversation with Ms. Phillips or someone else who has direct knowledge of this situation.

I'm surprised to hear you say "is now claiming". Is this a new claim? I thought that I recalled rumors like that from my early teen years, twenty years or so ago.

No, it wasn't a claim she'd made at the time that I heard the suggestion. It was during the time when there was a lot of news coverage about the drug use in the family and I seem to remember hearing speculation then--I was a young teenager at the time, so don't recall any specifics.

Baiting? I go to MTV to watch Beavis and Butthead. Which by the way is a terrific program. I highly recommend it. I don't start fights, but like you, I certainly call out things that don't make sense. If I had posted those links, I'm sure you'd have been right there saying the same thing. Equal = equal. Wow! You did some research on this - I'm impressed. In any case, I don't understand why Mackenzie wants to tell everyone about something like this anyway. If she wants to help other incest victims deal with their trauma, does it make sense for victims to make their shame public?

That actually wouldn't propel me to purchase her book/biography "High on Arrival". I think it's a sad story and John Philips was definitely not a model father.
Her childhood is similar to Robert Downey Jr. and his relationship with his father (drugs, not incest!). Neither of them had a chance growing up with parents encouraging them to to drugs, and even providing them.-
According to her step-mother Michelle Phillips who was an extremely good looking and talented woman...
"I have every reason to believe it's untrue," she told the Hollywood Reporter. "Mackenzie has a lot of mental illness. She's had a needle stuck up her arm for 35 years. I can only assume that she is telling the truth. I mean, why would someone lie about having sex with their parent. On the other hand, why would someone admit to it either. -
How can anyone but her and her father know if she was lying? It's not as if this concept is totally impossible, it happens EVERY day. People don't discuss it, so of course it sounds strange to most of us. I think she maybe is being truthful and maybe she is just trying to pay her drug debts. Who knows/cares?-

I understand the OP cares, I just mean how does this woman's story effect anyone accept her? Sure it's encouraging for those who have been through that, but to discredit it based on nothing but unfounded doubt seems a but pointless. -

I find it hard to believe that women having sex with their biological father on the eve of their wedding and continuing to have an incestuous sexual relationship for ten years with their biological father is a common occurence that happens every day... -

I don't she would lie about something this serious. Judging by the interview, it's quite obvious she's still affected and still coping by the encounter with her deceased father. -

I don't think any of us can say if she's lying or not - only she and her father know the truth. I DO however, find it very strange, disturbing and sad - for one thing, her father is dead and cannot tell his side at all. for another, those two were so screwed up on drugs, it doesn't surprise me....i love my papa bear, but i'm sure as hell not going to sleep with him for ten years - she's just one messed up individual. and apparently, so was her father. -
It would fit in with Monarch sex slave type stuff, but can't say any way. I hadn't heard of this person previously. I was also ignorant of the precise meaning of OP.

I have no doubts that she is telling the truth. I have three close friends that went through something similar; it is not as uncommon as anyone thinks. I'm sad that people don't understand why she wouldn't want to share it--it's not only healing for her, but personally I think it's healing for the world to tell the truth, no matter what it is. The reason so many people are shocked by this is for that very reason; because people hide it; and others believe it's rare. It's not.
It's interesting because I've been musing this morning about sharing some painful/personal stories on my memoir blog. And the only reason I hesitate is because I'm currently unemployed, am seeking employment, and potential employers could easily google me and read my stories. Otherwise I would never censor myself.
I also don't understand the blame on her; trust me, when you're young, a predator can coerce you in ways you would never imagine, even into believing you had a consensual relationship for years following.
It's just so odd I ran across this, because I was considering blogging about some similar things today and hadn't decided yet.
