The new cover of Playboy is really quite controversial. Is it abomination of God?

The publisher in Mexico claims "an effort to create a festive mood, not meant to be religious".

What are your thoughts?

It would be helpful if we could see it somewhere. Got a link?

I spent most of my life in California, and most of my adult life living in a part of town that was heavily Hispanic. That, coupled with a passion for social history, may give me a little insight into that picture.

First of all, the thing over the model's head, which I am sure most Americans are assuming mirror's Mary's (mother of Jesus) traditional attire, is known as a rebozo and is still worn by many Mexican woman, particularly the lower classes or traditionalists, even today.

You may associate stained glass windows with churches, but I can think of hundreds of old houses that have gorgeous stained-glass windows, and the arched window is not necessarily "churchish," either. Arched windows and doorways are quite common in Mexican architecture, including private homes.

The phrase "Te adoramos, Maria" translates to "We adore you, Mary." Unlike English, Spanish has two forms of the word "you," and "te" is used in the most familiar sense...between lovers, family members, and other loved ones. I am guessing this model is named Maria (one of the most common girl's names in Mexico) and the familiar form of address is to conjure a sense of intimacy between the readers and the model.

I think this is intended to be a salacious visual pun, but you'd have to know something about Mexican culture to catch it. Does it contain religious symbolism...well, I suppose if you looked at it that way, you could see it. Is it offensive? Not any more than any other Playboy cover...is draping a naked women in an American flag for the July cover offensive? Is it an abomination of God? Well, if the offices of Playbox Mexico get swallowed up in an earthquake and copies of the mag spontaneously burst into flames. I'd say "Yes." But until that happens, I'd say "no," it's just a rather spicy attempt to use sex and season to sell magazines.

While I don't find it offensive, the model is in a very typical pose that Mary is shown in, wearing a Mary like garment and she is called Mary. There is a bunch of religious symbolism in it.

Context? That is a foreign concept around here.

Personally, I do not see anything wrong with it.

I hope all religious people will boycott porn because of this!

(I can just imagine fathers telling their sons, now son, Playboy is just wrong. You can have my copy of Hustler instead...)
