There are many sites offering free storage facilities to store our files. Is it safe?

It is certainly safer than having your files disappear with a stolen computer, which is what happened to me.

So far it's been safe. I doubt yahoo will crash anytime soon.

As a backup option it is good to use online storage!! But should not depend on it.
    cheers!!!

It's as safe as any other form of storage.
In my point of view, the problem of online storage are these:
-you have to use bandwidth to upload AND download the file you're storing though this may not be a problem if you're using only for text documents
-you have no control over who access it (even though the company claims that it's safe, encrypted and no one have access to it, how can they prove it?)
-if the server goes downs you're in a trouble

I rather buy an external HDD and/or backup the files to other kinds of midia like DVD and whatever. If the files are really important than I wouldn't store on an online service.

Of course not. Then again, neither is storing them on your personal computer and connecting to the internet. Or carrying them with you in a folder when you need them for something. Or putting them in the mail. Not too much that's useful is "safe".

Never trust online even if they pretend to be secure it's just marketing sometimes. There are millions of credit cards numbers that have been lost by big institutions in the US so better not trust them.

So if you really want to secure you'd better encrypt your files first before uploading.

I wouldn't depend on it. I have 9 external hard drives and 4 internal. You can never have too many backups

But you cannot access them from anywhere, online storage has this advantage. And you are not cluttered with disks and cable all around your house I live in the capital of an european country at the very center and each meter square of space is really not cheap

well, you can set your own server up to be accessed from anywhere. Online storage is good as a backup, but I wouldn't recommend that it be used as the only backup. If something is important, save it online, burn it to a disc, and save it on a physical hard drive.

I will never give access to my pc : it's even less secure.

hahaha , 1. store ur files as draft in email ( Gmail/yahoo mail etc)

    2. make ur personal file, zip/winrar it with a password and then upload it to just any file uploader eg-rapidshare, and do refer to how and till when they store ur files COZ in case of rapidshare, it will do this just till 90 days from last click/download.
