Is Poetry an Art?

I believe so.
I write poetry because its part of my identity – it satisfies my need for individual expression.
Just like a Painter urges for a brush, or a sculptor craves for a chisel, I need a pen or a pencil or anything that will allow me to transform my thoughts into a form of written art.

Yes Poetry is an art - and it is a creative force.
It drives me to exist - and create.
I think in Poetry.-
I do believe poetry is art in word form, it can be just as beautiful if not more beautiful than a painting, picture or sculpture. It's funny you posted this question I just finish posting on my blog a picture I find very interesting that says 'You Are Art.'

Sometimes is about only one poem, for example Roque Dalton and his poem "Desnuda", I believe that poem is perfect, I always say that when come to my mind some poetry. I believe spanish language is richer than other languages to express feelings by the way.
Desnuda
Amo tu desnudez
porque desnuda me bebes con los poros,
como hace el agua
cuando entre sus paredes me sumerjo.
Tu desnudez derriba con su calor los límites,
me abre todas las puertas para que te adivine,
me toma de la mano como a un niño perdido
que en ti dejara quieta su edad y sus preguntas.
Tu piel dulce y salobre que respiro y que sorbo
pasa a ser mi universo, el credo que se nutre;

Poetry is indeed art and a life form in words. It comes from the heart,mind and soul. Most great poems have never been seen nor heard because it is so personal. -
for me its more then an art its my medication -
I think anything can be an art if there's emotion and creativity involved. Even scientists can be artists if looked at from a certain angle.

What? Most of the people that replyed write poetry so it only natural that they share my point of view. Ask 10 people who dont right poetry if it is an art... and you will see their reply!

Well I don't write poetry,but I love to read it. So that's my answer. I can go and ask 10 people if they think poetry is an art. I'm sure the 10 I ask though will say yes.

It s about knowledge, if you havent culture you wont sea poetry like an art because in fact poetry is art.

I will agree with you in this one, but also you need to like poetry, you need to feel the poet inside of you, try to feel he's feelings, sometimes that's not easy, poets disguise their emotions very well

Poets use symbolic words that is normal because poetry want to englobe a lot of ideas in a short space.
I think the same that you in relation to the poetry talking about understand, you must be touched for the words of the poet, each people have his own view of poetry and maybe some dont like one and enjoy other. You need a little of feeling inside you to understand (compatibility). Poetry is for people who is smart and sensitive.-
I agree with most of what you said... except for "poetry is for people who are smart and sensitive." Poetry is for everyone and as a poet, you have to be smart and sensitive enough to convey your message in a manner which can be understood by all...

We think different, some people dont understand -and maybe they cannot do it- the point or the points of some poetry, they are close mind to that, but with some intelligence is other way, poetry is not easy, well good poetry, and I dont talking about too much difficult poetry. I dont believe that poets must do easy poems, they are free to write what they feel.

I'm pretty sure that poetry is classified as an art. So, yes.-
In this case I dont think its a matter of classification... but of perception...

Poetry is artistic, though. Whether if it was labelled as that for classification purposes, or by perception. I don't know if there's any deeper meaning behind that or not.

I would answer like that:
The poetry is like the ARk of the human brain. The BRAIN is the greatest ever weapon , but made exactly for self destruction purposes. -
Most definately is an art. To be able to place meaningful words beside any object or situation demonstrates that fact.

I think anything can be art, if you feel passionately about it, and describe it, through music, words, thoughts, patterns, anything that can be a medium for passion and creativity is art in my opinion. i write poetry too, I'll check yours out presently. -
Poetry is an art indeed! Being creative with words, creating sentences that speaks to ones imagination ^_^ -
