    I listen to EVERYTHING Webby.

    How ya doin?

I happen to like a lot of everything from oldies to hiphop and everything in between.

I have a preference for a song by Tori Amos... Crucify..
And I like about anything she does...

ANd I like Jeff Buckley --- SO REAL...

And a couple of other offbeat things.

But - I don't have the energy to go get the links kiddo.

Well, "pop" used to be short for "popular", although how it's evolved more into a genre than an adjective. But the reason it's pop is becasue it's mainstream - it appeals to a lot of people, sometimes by going after the lowest common denominator and sometimes by sticking with well-known (and often over-done) subjects with which everyone is familiar to some extent.

Between predictable lyrics and autotune equipment, any reasonably-attractive person can be made into a "pop star" these days. Being a musician is a lot tougher.

The thing that I hate about pop music, is the very thing that makes it pop music: the fact that radio stations over play a song until everyone knows it, it doesnt matter what genre the band/group should be - if its overplayed and overheard (and after the fact people still like the song) then its pop music.

Im thinking (off the top of my head) groups like greenday, the offspring, nickleback etc etc they started out as rock/punk bands, but now that they've hit the mainstream they're considered pop-rock.

It could be selfish of me but I like to take a certain ownership of the music I like, and to be honest I don't like sharing my music tastes with little miss 13yr old pop diva who knows nothing about music (or the lyrics) but likes a song because it's been played so many times on the radio and "everyone" is listening to it.

On the flipside its good for the band but unless the group sticks to what they're good at they all tend to change and sell out.

Don't you just hate that? I think of myself as a bit of an elitist when it comes to music and i feel losing IQ points when people ask me to sing with them this particular song they heard on TV. But of course I also stir away from these certain underground acts that propagate the thought they are cool just because no one has heard of their stuff therefore they aren't selling out. I think in music business there is a thing called quality control. Everything should work together: The composition, the production and yes the packaging.

      Agreed,

I also hate it when a certain song starts out as an underground song and you liked it back then, but then a few years down the track somehow the artist makes a name for themselves and releases that same song to the mainstream. To me not only have I heard the song already but by the time everyone else is really getting into it, im completely over it.

I also don't like the fact that people will only start to listen to a certain song just because it is already 'old'. Nostalgia is a good thing but why not like the music when it is new? Freshly baked so to speak? Did you know that the Philippines is a haven for 'has been ' acts? Former top40 acts stage concerts here because people here will always listen especially when it is an old love song lol.

thats interesting, and kinda sad all the same. Kinda reminds me of the stereotype that has been groups are believed to be new in international countries. As seen in family guy when thet're in iraq and getting excited over brand new cassette tapes of has been artists
