Sure. If you want to control the way people think, just buy a News Channel. (See also Murdoch, Rupert)

People sync into alpha waves when they watch TV, which corresponds to the state of light hypnosis.

Question: Is Television used for Brainwashing?

Of course it is. What do you think the advertising is aimed at if it isn't aimed at: "buy our products or services?" What do you think religious shows are aimed at if they aren't aimed at spreading the gospel message and gaining converts? What do you think that news channels like FOX are aimed at if they aren't aimed at getting viewers to believe that their biased and slanted versions of the news is factual? What do you think spi-called "reality" shows are aimed at if they aren't aimed at getting viewers to believe that their show depicts the world as it is, rather than recognizing that the scenarios they create are the stuff of fantasies?

I rarely watch TV because it has a negative and pervasive influence on the mind. I can get news online and I can find all kinds of healthier entertainment than sitting on my butt in front of an electronic box, and volunteering to be hypnotized.

      this is arguable

      Changes in Brain Function

A similar thing seems to happen when we watch television. Research by Professor Herbert Krugman found that within 30 seconds of turning on the television, our brain becomes neurologically less able to make judgements about what we see and hear on the screen. Our brain treats incoming information uncritically. Our brain waves switch to predominantly alpha waves, indicating an unfocused, receptive lack of attention.

What surprised Krugman, however, was how rapidly this state emerged. Further research revealed that our brain’s left hemisphere, which processes information logically and analytically, tunes out while we are watching television. This tuning-out allows the right hemisphere of our brain, which processes information emotionally and uncritically, to function unimpeded. ‘It appears,’ wrote Krugman, ‘the basic electrical response of the brain is clearly to the medium. Television is a communication medium that effortlessly transmits huge quantities of information not thought about at the time of exposure.’

Television is used to make money. Whether or not it's brainwashing your children (or you!) depends entirely on what you watch.

Educational programs such as kid's shows, discovery channel shows, Planet Earth and Blue Planet productions, History channel and so forth aren't "brainwashing" unless you consider educational material to be brainwashing. There are also few if any commercials depending on which channel the program is on.

Reality TV shows and most sitcoms/soap operas aren't brainwashing so much as brain numbing.

And some shows, I would venture are "brainwashing" - as in, they have a specific agenda set up, and goals to change opinions to their points of view for the purpose of creating large numbers of people who do or support X,Y,Z.

Oh be sensible and logical, why don't you?

You probably live in one of those places where you have access to a huge number of channels and can get great educational programming, right? If so, I'm green with envy.

We get quite a few channels now - but before it was only 2-12. Regular channels we watch are PBS (for kids show and Newshour), History Channel, Discovery Channel, Travel Channel, and occasionally Comedy Central.
    5. timethief
Lucky you. I only get 3 channels.

      That's what movies are for

Before I had cable (which really, was like only a few years ago) I only had a TV for movie watching.
