Is Texas that good? I read on the best places to live that Texas towns came up more than any other state. I lived in NY all my life. I went to Texas once near Dallas and really liked it.

Is Texas the new Florida? Everyone was moving to Florida in the 1990s I know. Maybe I will move there when I am older.

I grew up in Texas and there are some really nice parts of it. But it is danged hot all the time! Can't get away from that.

Oh tell me about it. I went in August I think to Dallas. I could not believe the heat. It was near 100 I think. But I don't like the cold weather. I rather have heat any day.

I really liked Austin, but I think the main reason Texas comes up a lot on those lists is because it is one of the most affordable states in the country.

They rate it by all factors. Jobs, crime, climate, cost of living... everything combined. It is cheaper though.

it's even hotter with those flak jackets on

      Ahem, that's "y'all," timethief.
    2. Stillthinking
      Actually, it should be

I'll let y'all know this summer, eh?

At first I was going and then I backed out but now I've reconsidered. So I'll let y'all know what I think of Austin.
    4. satijournal
No, it should be: "I'll let y'all know this summer, eh? Hey, what's that dang deal?"

      @Gtally

is Austin a good barometer for texas in general?

seems like in the "Tejastan" thread, there was some talk of an "Austin Airlift"

I've never lived in Austin, but I have many friends there. And the Texas Hill Country is very nice...
    7. Agit8r
I've heard that about the Hill Country

You have to be very careful of Texans. Many of them have mites, so wash your hands thoroughly if you touch one.

I live in Austin, and have been aaaaaaaall over Texas, it's amazing. It has EVERYTHING. Yes, it's hot in the summer... and if you go to the Gulf Coast you'll get humidity. Winters are cold, sometimes lightly snowy. Spring and Autumn are awesome. I like to stick in the middle of the state -- just north of hurricanes, just south of tornadoes. I have lived in 7 states, but don't plan to leave Texas anytime soon.

Austin is definitely not a good barometer of Texas. Having lived there, a very small town in the hill country and now in San Antonio, i can tell you that Austin is much cooler than most other places in TX...IMHO.

Without going into a lot of detail...it's kinda like they took a piece of California and plopped it down in the middle of Texas. Much more laidback, liberal and generally weirder and funkier than any other place. I hope to move back in the next few years.

Now before others from TX get all bent out of shape, I like SA. Liked Houston when I visited bt would not want to live there. The coast is very nice although I have not been many places down there. Living in the hill country was awesome...so pretty. But, Austin is def my fav.

Wow! Thanks for the feedback. What you have said dovetails with my friends' impressions of Austin. I'm going to remain undercover in Austin so my extended family in Texas won't even know I've come and gone.

If you need some tips on good places to eat, catch a show, see some surrounding towns, etc., let me know.

Thanks for all your answers guys.

    Hello Time!

I remember getting lost in Dallas airport. It is huge. It is unreal if you have never been there.

So you won't be landing in Dallas airport I guess? Austin is not near there.
    1. Jaybetee
actually most of my flights to austin stopped in dallas and then you have to take another 40 minute flight to austin.

Dallas airport is a nightmare, I agree. I did live in San Antonio for awhile. The Riverwalk is great and the food is even better.
