If you commit a crime what happens? Quite predictably, you go to jail

A real criminal is used to the idea of going to jail. He meets with his old friends and enemies there. Over time even the familiar enemies would be more like acquaintances. Is jail working for him to reform him?

Our modern and advanced society continues to do the same over the centuries, punishing people for wrongdoings

I ask, are we really evolving as a society? With new advances in the field of human behavior et all boiling down to zero practicality?

Catch my arguments in the blog (under the title "crime and punishment")

I don't think jail should be about reform..it should be about punishment.

    You can't con a con

But how does that help anyone at all? Your tax money is going for the free boarding, lodging and entertainment to the guy who broke into your house

Instead if he were to show up some day with a lovely smile on his face asking if he could mow your lawn for you, wouldn't you appreciate it?

Um I know they should get 3 hots and a cot...that's how I see it. There should be no TV,radio, phone,or yard time. I think if tax payers fit the bill we should spend the bare minimum on some criminals welfare. If they get sick say well if you wanted to see a dr. You shoulda thought of that before ya raped and murdered the 9 yr old...
Punishment is what prison is supposed to be.

But punishment is just a variation of an eye for an eye principle. Maybe it was OK in medieval times, when people used to stone the alleged wrong doer on the spot. Now we have courts to verify the wrong doings.. but this is all in a tangent

The main issue is, is our civilized society crime free? And the answer seems to be "no". In spite of supposedly understanding human behavior we are unable to apply any principle to prevent crime from happening

As a society we value life. Why? because we don't like to lose our members. But in case of a criminal, aren't we losing an individual? How do we save this life?

As you say he may be a rapist or whatever. But when you change him, you award a death sentence to his bad self, and welcome him home

    System(s) - No.
    Criminals(s)- Yes. In overtime...

    Bump

I say, no more prisons - only rehab.. whatcha think, uh?

An obvious problem with our market-based-legal-system, is that there can not be EQUALITY BEFORE THE LAW
    1. crazyTsu
      Can you elaborate?
  6. HollytheHousewife
criminals need to learn to suffer the consequences of their action.
    1. crazyTsu
When they know beforehand that they will be made to suffer, likely they are prepared. Or sometimes it is just a calculation between risk and reward

The law has no gameplan. Just catch them and put them inside. True criminals know this and they can even play the game so as to win. Whereas innocents suffer disproportionately for an occasional or rare unplanned crime

The real problem is inside the mind of the criminal. As long as he has the idea in his head to commit crimes, he will continue to do so. All because he doesn't know any better!

don't give me that... you know right from wrong. It is instinctive almost. I'm telling you the man that rape jessie lundsford, kept her hidden in his closet for 3 days making that baby smoke crack and then continually raping and sodomizing her,all before he dug a hole in his back yard and burried her alive... did you know he was one of those "REFORMED" sex offenders.... PAAAAALEASE
  8. crazyTsu
What do you do if your car spews up a smoke dust? You repair it. What do you do with a mind that produces crappy thoughts all the time? Of course he knew the consequence of every action of his, but he could not control himself!
When the government likes to spend trillions rescuing banks and millions in Mars mission etc, why not on ways to research on how to change someone? Building a new civil society is surely worth it, rather than visiting mars and roaming in its desert
  9. HollytheHousewife
that's neither here nor there. The deed has been done. What do you do with that once reformed sex offender. YOU PUNISH HIM!!! don't give me that BS! You reep what you sew. After you do what he did to that poor little girl, you make sure HE WILL NEVER SEE THE LIGHT OF ANOTHER DAY!! what he did wasn't only WRONG it was EVIL!! He deserves to be PUNISHED!
    1. crazyTsu
You really think he was not punished before? Yet he returned. That didn't solve any problem

some cars go to the junk yard and get CRUSHED!!!There is no hope for those kind of cars
    1. crazyTsu
That's the difference between a thing and a human. If someone loses an arm or leg or becomes dysfunctional in some way he is not put to death

Criminals are also dysfunctional, although their disability is not seen clearly by people not qualified to do so

-- well speaking in a general sense at least

I have seen alot of people go to jail. They like it there because we give them cable, food, and everything they need. Do yall know that it is law that they have cable insome places. The sherrif in Arizona (I think the one with the tent city) took the cable away and had to give it back. He gave back Disney and the Weather channel. I had a friend who kept getting DUI's and had weekend jail. They were in mobile homes with cable, play boys and a fridge full of food. The one that shot a man at a local bar got parole and went right back to the bar and sat down and ordered a drink. He wanted to go back for some strange reason. I do not think Jail is the way to go but I have no clue how to make the point stick that you dont do that again.
    1. crazyTsu
@how to make the point stick that you dont do that again

This is the kind of problem our society, if it's truly so advanced, should be able to solve. Where are our thinkers, philosophers, doctors, researchers, et all? Are they busy making prozacs somewhere? Have we misallocated our resources?
  12. HollytheHousewife
I know we need prison reform, not prisoner reform!!!

    3 hots and a Kot
    1. crazyTsu
And what do you think you expect a bored and frustrated criminal person to do, except get into more trouble and expansion of his criminal tendencies
    2. crazyTsu
But, having some books around might help some.. like locking them up in a library (LOL)

Religion might help some others.. each one would be different

If they could have a change of environment, some adult home-schooling where they re-learn how to live life?

Well I am no behavior therapist, but you get the idea..

    @crazy Tsu

you're crazy...it's fun to think of things from a philosphical point of view. This is real life...here now.
  14. crazyTsu
It was once fun to think of landing on the moon, too
  15. HollytheHousewife
well as you are thinking there is probably some little girl being kidnapped raped, tortured, and killed like last weeks dinner. I say PUNISHMENT...u say reform. We can just agree to totally DISAGREE
    1. crazyTsu
Supposing we catch them early.. for those who are yet developing criminal minds, they could be helped? Maybe law enforcers could get involved in a very different role there.. have a helpline system for those who might need help with themselves?

None of what I am saying can be done in a jiffy.. societal change is quite challenging.. but at least we ca think about it!
    2. HollytheHousewife
ur not gonna let me go to sleep are ya? That's fine, but you will never be able to catch every potential rapist, serial killer... It's just part of life. There is true evil out there and we should protect our babies, instead of reforming the unreformable...
  16. HollytheHousewife
now having said that... I have to go catch some zzzz's before i have to get up and start all over again 2morrow!!!

I'll hit yall back in the AM...if ur lucky
    HOLLA
  17. drjalee52
In a word, No. We have too much crime and too few doing time. Most major crimes are unkown...
  18. crazedmama
Well, first of all, I think the justice system is way too screwed up. You have people doing more time for Marijuana possession than rape! How is that justice?

And as for prison, well, there is so much violence that goes on behind bars. If you want to deny people of yard time and radios.. etc., what sort of monsters do you think they will be when they get out? They will lose their mental stability that way! When someone goes into the "hole" the guards defecate on their food and they are forced to eat bugs and sleep on cold hard floors. What do you think they come out of that situation like? .. It's not all fun and games in prison, that's for sure. I've heard way too many stories from people who have been there and never want to go back!
