I think it's really necessary to have a domain even before you start blogging. It just cost $7.15 for a .com domain .. and even cheaper you get get a .info one.

The difference is really obvious when u start late. Check out the alexa ranking @ the right side bar of my blog www.phostan.com and you can see the difference.

All the backlinks you work so hard to get on old url is gone when u change to a new domain. so i feel it's better to get a domain early on.

What do u think?

i have an experience on buying my new domain. i buy it from my local provider.
when i check using their tool and the domain name is available. i make the payment to them and wait for setting up my domain.

within the period when i check the name using another tool, and the result is taken!. omg what happen to my domain name and money. i contact them and they tell me that the tool they provide are not up to date. they ask me to find another domain name. now i running the new domain 5 days old. what i'm regret was they don't say sorry to me as a customer. this is bad

then i feel it's time to change to a new provider. a reliable and customer-oriented one.

You definitely need your own domain if you want people to take your website/blog seriously. It's better for branding, recognition, and all that good stuff.

You don't need a custom domain to be taken seriously moose.

I use blogspot and its working great.

    I wouldn't get one.

      that's good for you bradblog2

i am begining to think it's all about personal preference and content instead of just a domain name.
