After flogging your guts out blogging, networking, staying up late writing and generally being tied to the computer 24/7, do you ever think "Is there a point to all this?"

I'm not necessarily talking about making lots of $$$ (if any!) but do you sometimes feel like you're spending too much time and energy on your blog? What is your reason to carry on?

And if you've figured out the meaning of life too, just pop it down here.

I don't feel like I'm doing any of that stuff, LOL. I probably do spend more time online now than I did before I had a blog, but prior to having a blog I just spent that time watching TV ... so ... this is better.

It's just a hobby and I enjoy it. And I actually spend more time in my real life than I do with my blog ... so it's a pretty good balance.

I have no life, so I spend all my time online pretending I have one.

      I don't believe you.
    2. CrotchetyOldMan
I'm almost always online. Other than a short nap in the afternoon, I'm online from 9 a.m. until 2 a.m.

I'm really sorry but if I am asked the meaning of life I have to answer. And it is always the same answer.

Well the answer is... and you are not going to like it but... the answer is 42.

I get carried away sometimes - and I wonder the same thing. i think to myself well the hell am I researching thus and such whatevers to use as a blip n my blog post? I could be painting, eating, having sex...

And other times I am more balanced, and it doesn't bother me so much
    1. tiggyblog
Yes, and you could be painting, eating, having sex and thinking "Hmm, I could be blogging right now!"

Hasn't happened to me yet - but there's time...
    2. CrotchetyOldMan
I gave up painting and having sex. I eat while I blog.

      My life is so sad.

It's called blogger burnout, or whattheheckamibotheringwiththisfor.

One of two things will happen: you'll quit your blog or the feeling will pass, so hang in there.

It's fun, other than that, nope-probably pretty meaningless for me.

I dunno...maybe we should ask Al Gore?!?
  8. drjay1966
    Fame and glory, obviously.
  9. TheBigRuski
Maybe now is a better time to ask!
    1. Anok
      My thoughts exactly!! LOL ;D
    2. TheBigRuski
      Should we call 911?
    3. Anok
Is there a 911 for blogging disorders?
  10. drjay1966
I actually just attempted to read the post on his blog, which contained a lot more words but no more sense.
Anybody know--beyond the obvious substance abuse--what this guy's problem is?
    1. TheBigRuski
      Not me...

I think it goes beyond a "blogging disorder" (@Anok)
    2. Anok
      LOL Ruski....
  11. TheBigRuski
    I think he just went "bye-bye". Glad I wasn't a mod tonight!

Maybe someday people will think about blogging as art, and then we will all be pioneers.

I really doubt it, but I try to say that about everything I do to feel better about my use of time.

In the grand scheme of things I don't know, but for each blog entry I do there is.

For me I think I'm blogging for the future of humanity and anyone who reads my fragile but magical words will instantly be transformed into a lottery winning super creative with ideas to burn and a sexual record to envy.
    1. Arcticulates
Wow ardy wish you lots of luck in your endeavor! lol. It sounds like you have really thought this one out!

'And since I want to be a lottery winning super creative with ideas to burn and sexual record to envy type person' I am headed to read your blog right now...

I'm doing it for the children.

ahahahaha! sorry I couldn't keep a straight face.

I find it increasingly time-consuming to manage all the various limbs of my ever-expanding inter-net empire, but on the plus side I have been recently squiring a rather delightful lady about town, who's interest in my noble self was piqued my fine web-journals.

Truly, it has made it all worth while.
  17. lordiwanttobewhole
I balance things pretty good i think...I blog less now, life is pulling me everywhere...away from the computer.
  18. Arcticulates
This is a really tough question. I will have to think about it a while. I can't think of any reason whatsoever to keep doing it or to stop doing it.. hmmmm!
  19. pinklatex
It takes time. That's the only thing that stinks, but the personal satisfaction you will get from earning money off your words and thoughts is priceless. Don't give up!!!

There is no objective purpose, only subjective purposes. I don't get bored blogging, I just stop and do something else like work on a song, or a piece of art, poem, go out, whatever. I have been working on a site\blog that displays my songs and field recordings in an organized manner, and allows them to easily be played. Check it out - www.travisjmorgan.com/sound

Nah, while I do spend a lot of time pretty much chained to my desk - I spend a remarkably small time actually blogging so that's definitely not an issue for me. Most of my time is spent on various writing projects - and I usually surf around and stuff in between so it never gets tedious.

"Is there a point to all this?"

    Yes. One word: groupies.
  23. pbdjones
I guess it comes down to whether or not it beats the alternatives. If I could honestly say that I would be out trying to solve world hunger or curing diseases or writing the next great novel if I weren't blogging, it would be hard to justify.

But if the alternative is TV, well, that's a little easier.

Its only for time killing No more real effect
    1. lordlikely
Why are you so intent on killing time? What has time ever done to you?

      Poor time.

Every time I get a hit on my blog, God saves a kitten.

I do it for the kittens.

The only time I really take a beating is when I've worked so hard on something - and someone comes along and just shoots it full of holes. It's then that I seriously debate throwing my hands up and just walking away. I don't take criticism well, and rarely view it constructively - call it a personality flaw. But when (for example the one listed here) I'm doing all the work on a blog for free, presenting the info for free, and have nothing to gain - it just gripes me when someone "critiques" it and goes out of their way to point out weakness or flaw.

I'd be a lot more open to suggestions of what was GOOD and positive stuff. Basically I'm just getting sick of drama. There's days when I just want to scream - if you don't like it... click away, click away! Far away. LOL You know?

At this point in my life, I don't have much else to do, so it's all good !

I know I spend way too much time on the net, but I don't have children, I don't have a job atm, my house is reasonably tidy and tea is on the table every night lol. I'm in pain most of the day/night, so it's a welcome distraction and relief !

I don't do it for the money (altho it would be great to make a few dollars from my Ads I admit), and I'm certainly not doing for the fame LOL
  28. OneMuslim
I hope someday, people from tv will come and knock my door, where is OneMuslim? we want him to be our guest in our upcoming tv show! wow!

okay that is a joke seriously, I am just having fun+ want to still be able to absorb some knowledge by blogging.

I spend a lot of hours on the computer, working on my blog. I am retired and have other things to do, but it has become a challenge to get my blog going in the right direction. I hope someday to make a little money at it.
My wife thinks I'm nuts, but you learn a lot and you meet some neat people.
I don't look at it as a waste of time. There are other less constructive ways to waste time.
