I've been using Twitter for months now and I understand, according to other's opinion, how it can help create traffic but the question is, can it really help create traffic leading to your site?

I think you need 1000's of followers for it to be really beneficial. I have just over 400 followers and I only see about 15 visits from posting a link to my blog on twitter.
I am an active member on twitter, participating in convos and not just blogging, hopefully over time it will help with traffic. -

To get people to follow you on Twitter, make sure that you said yes to having emails sent out to you when people want to follow. People will find you.
I have a few hundred twitter followers and I follow the same amount. Twitter, in my opinion, is way overrated. People are jumping on the twitter bandwagon because everybody else it. Not because it actually works. It reminds me of StumbleUpon. That was the hot thing a year or two ago. You are hearing less and less about it...Except that Ebay wants to get rid of it.
The best way to get traffic to your blog is by having your site rank well in the search engines. To accomplish that task it takes work. You need to get people (one at a time) to link to your blog from their blog. You get enough people doing that then your blog will move up on the search engine pages and more people will see it and click on it.
It is not as sexy as twitter or stumbleupon. But it works. So you need to decide if you want to go along with crowd and be cool, or if you want traffic and people actually reading your blog.
In my humble opinion...Twitter is a waste of time. -
I only use it to tweet my new posts. However, many other bloggers do use twitter very skillfully to drive traffic to their blogs. Here are some links to resources posts that will be useful to those who are new to using twitter.

I have a blogger friend swearing that he gets a lot of traffic from Twitter. Well, because has 10,000 followers and follow 10,000 also. It's ridiculous to keep up with 10,000 people and how can I get 10,000. I don't have enough time for my blog much more than finding ways to make others follow me.
I agree, Twitter is too overrated---too hyped and just a trend. In 5 years, Twitter will be just a fad. More than 30 % of Twitters don't even know about what is it but has signed up for it.
I am overwhelmed by Twitter because of its too many uses , too many applications plus their monetization opps.
I'm using Twitter only to announce my posts and updates...and that's it ....and that is why more than 20 had unfollowed me because I am very boring at Twitter ---probably because I don't Twit a lot. -
I use twitter like I used blog catalog, I have core group of friends that almost always look at what I post (about 25-30) these people tend to push Thumbs Up on stumble or digg or post to reddit. Either way, the way I drive traffic to my blog with twitter is kind of round of bout and indirect but it works.

I am new to Twitter and blogging in general so I have not noticed any real traffic based off me using Twitter. Hopefully as I continue to work on connecting with people and gaining friends, aquaintances, and followers that will change. I have yet to learn how to maxamize the potential of all my resources and fully grasp the Twitter concept, but I'm learning. Maybe a few of you can help me and give me some insight.

Hi,
I use Twitter for : marketing my web presence, posting interesting links, finding interesting links/sites, read opinions, frying eggs, know what's going on.
You can have an idea of what I mean if you look here :
